Seeing Ippo's 3 most explosive moves: Liver blow, Gazelle Punch, and Dempsey Roll, in sequence had me grinning like an idiot. This anime is more than 20 years old, yet it can still give that hype. The build up of their rematch is definitely one of the most well-executed and most satisfying arcs, at least in any sports anime.
It is genuinely unbelievable how good that moment is. For me, it's the single best example of an opening cut-in in an anime episode, ever. The way the guitar at the beginning of Inner Light blows in like a storm as Ippo revs his punch up, and then the theme we all know and love crashes down when he lands the Gazelle Punch. The absolute peak of emotional payoff.
The part after Ippo gets knocked down for the 2nd time is my favorite part of this entire show. The sound of Ippo falling face first into the mat, the screaming crowd, the real Boxing terminology, the commentator, the stomping of the feet, the cracked ribs, the fighter's inner monologue, the sheer determination of the fighters, and on and on and on. You can truly tell the people who made this love Boxing! It represents everything I love about fighting sports! I am just glad that there's an Anime that pays such love & care to the sport of Boxing.
One of the greatest anime ever.... When they made this, you can tell they took their time and did their homework. This is why this anime will continue to age like fine wine. It doesn't need supernatural kicks that can destroy armies and doesn't need to use wind as poison BS, just great storylines, great character development, no main character just instantly getting better and beating an impossible wall in one go. Real rivalries that aren't one-sided, opposing Fighters being taken seriously with their own development, and no jobbers. Love this anime.
Hey man. I love this anime it's argueably my favourite anime in competition with another. But u didn't need to throw shade on baki the grappler like that. The anime is good in it's own way. It definite pushed the limits of the human body without it being too crazy.

I've seen my fair share of anime fights, but this is the only one that has me coming back over and over. I've been rewatching the entire 85mins like once a month since I finished the series about half a year ago and it still gets tears out of me every time

Literally every time he spars or trains with anyone, their inner monologue is "what if he came back??? He'd be so strong."It'll happen sooner or later with either Sendo or Ricardo as the final boss, and Ippo vs miyata as the prelude to it. Can't see it going any other way and being satisfying for the reader
1:00:49 when ippo asks his coach what it means to be strong. It tears me up. Ippo was a bullied kid, always a weakiling. Sendo was a bully troublemaker before boxing, always strong. Now he is facing him as an opponent, he asks his coach the meaning to his struggle. It should be noted that sendo is the harder puncher so ippo is at a disadvantage in this match.

When Sendo became super mad, he put a cross-counter right on Ippo's temple and not on his stomach as you see in the Anime version. I found the blow rather more brutal and Ippo had managed to hold on despite receiving Sendo's fist on his temple ? Edit : I was wrong.
i keep coming back to this video. one of my favorite anime fights of all time. this fight is the culmination of EVERYTHING Ippo has learned up to this point. reading his opponents intentions with just a brief moment of eye contact, his three big moves, the liver blow, gazelle pun, and dempsy roll, with the perfect feint thrown in. WOW WOW WOW so fkn hype.
I love this entire fight, and Sendo has been my favorite character since he first appeared on screen, but I think a REALLY underrated scene in this fight is where Sendo and Ippo's size different begins to come into play, and Sendo begins BEATING the FEAR into Ippo in the corner. Sendo is genuinely terrifying and Ippo is believably scared in that moment.

I watched this anime recently at my 33 or 34 years old, fall in love with it from the get go and now is one of my favorites along with Dragon Ball and DBZ.
that's peculiar. met chicks before who dig stuff like shows whom are directed for the most part (or even exclusively) to a male audience. think shows will kinds of male-center and all that jazz.. sole male leads, revolving macho-ism. ill even dig into some more obnoxious examples like the silly tropes such having a squire of damsels in distress coarsing a harem on the male lead surprisngly and ive had heard as well as met a girl ehre and there who'd watch that kind of stuff despite the stigma. thing is I always thought hajime no ippo was the one show that was the exception to that trend. some mates of mine who flock out to crowded japanese-themed events and not even they claimed to meet/hear of a girl who was even remotely into HMI(it was brought into discussion afte I asked them), much less one whos fanatic enough to claim to rewatch one of it's bouts a generous amount of times 😂. not suggesting i find it abnormal(or weird). I would normally not have exoected for someone whos not a dude to really find any kind of appeal in a boxing anime. i couldve had the wrong idea. in a way you can boil it down to just a bunch of dank buff dudes going at it in well-made and dope actionpacked sequences with some good humor and some interesting character-growing arcs sprinkled on top and I guess that can appeal to everyone. still though well knowingly that you just meant to leave this one short comment expressing praise for the series and nothing more. you probably didnt want to, nor expect to get involved into any form of discussion. though I still implore you, a stranger on the internet who's the first individual from the opposite gender to mine was (at least vocally, was) appreciating this show, to answer me this question who me and many other are curious to hear your prespective on. What got you into and liking this show to that degree? simpathy with a character? was it the humor? the fights?(whom were masterfully done) was it something else? if it's not sometihng tangible, do you think you can put your finger on what makes you rate this as a good show?
They legit extended the Temple Of Prey soundtrack for 5-6 whole minutes at the beginning of the fight. That is hard-core. I like this version of it too, you don't have the drums in the background for most of it in the anime-version. It really elevated the fight for me.
What I'm talking about here ultimately isn't important, but I hate that we'll never get this version with some of the instruments opted out. Theres also the situation with the Shadow soundtrack also has a version combines the instruments from another soundtrack.

Read the manga, you’ve got a heavy like 800~ chapters to read with sick arcs with all the characters like Takamura Kimura Aoki Miyata Mashiba Sendō ippo and the others, plus the illustrations look just like the anime and you can almost see them move

A moment that gets underrated is that primal animal monologue sendo goes through at the end where even though he has been defeated he refuses to break eye contact with Ippo, the man who defeated him
This Anime clearly got all the small things right. It's the inner monologue & side commentary that makes these fights so enthralling! We literally get to know these characters as we go. It's a brilliantly written Anime! And how bout that Soundtrack? Man, whoever did the score for this deserves an award!
When I first watched this I was microdosed off lsd it was supremely moving the music was a lil too much for me but when sends came back I fell in love with his grit , that shot to the nose really rocked iPpo almost took his soul
@SwayDante We also have a completely kickass dub in Spanish here in Mexico. There's something about Mexican voice actors doing voices and sound effects for stuff about boxing, it just stands out. You can clearly see how much they enjoy doing the dub and how much feeling and effort they poured into making each punch sound legit

"Ive never felt a punch this good before" that line so danm chillin. Imagine getting hit so HARD it maxes out the pain scale and flips back around to pleasure 😂 holy sht man. Ive hit my head hard before so i know exactly what hes talking about. You literally just feel so sleepy and tired. You dont care if its the cold hard ground, the lust of drowsiness completely overwhelms you to the point where it takes ALL your effort just to keep your consciousness and a single moment of losing focus or a thought drifitng for a split second it all it takes for lights out, and youre not coming back until your body says its coming back. It's a sensual URGE to just rest and f*king DIE (figuratively). Its nothing like sleep deprivation, ive stayed up for over 48hrs before and it takes physical strength to stay awake and keep your eyes open, but that is more a physical sensation which uou can only resist as long as your eye lid muscles have the energy. Getting knocked out is completely different becausw its not muscle fatigue but more the mental/physiological URGE to just rest. Its like feeling incredibly honry for sleep. And its SO easy to satisfy because all you need to do is just stop holding on...just for a literal split second and you'll be gone 😂

that's peculiar. met chicks before who dig stuff like shows whom are directed for the most part (or even exclusively) to a male audience. think shows will kinds of male-center and all that jazz.. sole male leads, revolving macho-ism. ill even dig into some more obnoxious examples like the silly tropes such having a squire of damsels in distress coarsing a harem on the male lead surprisngly and ive had heard as well as met a girl ehre and there who'd watch that kind of stuff despite the stigma.
thing is I always thought hajime no ippo was the one show that was the exception to that trend. some mates of mine who flock out to crowded japanese-themed events and not even they claimed to meet/hear of a girl who was even remotely into HMI(it was brought into discussion afte I asked them), much less one whos fanatic enough to claim to rewatch one of it's bouts a generous amount of times 😂. not suggesting i find it abnormal(or weird). I would normally not have exoected for someone whos not a dude to really find any kind of appeal in a boxing anime. i couldve had the wrong idea. in a way you can boil it down to just a bunch of dank buff dudes going at it in well-made and dope actionpacked sequences with some good humor and some interesting character-growing arcs sprinkled on top and I guess that can appeal to everyone. still though
well knowingly that you just meant to leave this one short comment expressing praise for the series and nothing more. you probably didnt want to, nor expect to get involved into any form of discussion. though I still implore you, a stranger on the internet who's the first individual from the opposite gender to mine was (at least vocally, was) appreciating this show, to answer me this question who me and many other are curious to hear your prespective on.
What got you into and liking this show to that degree? simpathy with a character? was it the humor? the fights?(whom were masterfully done) was it something else? if it's not sometihng tangible, do you think you can put your finger on what makes you rate this as a good show?

They legit extended the Temple Of Prey soundtrack for 5-6 whole minutes at the beginning of the fight. That is hard-core. I like this version of it too, you don't have the drums in the background for most of it in the anime-version. It really elevated the fight for me.
What I'm talking about here ultimately isn't important, but I hate that we'll never get this version with some of the instruments opted out. Theres also the situation with the Shadow soundtrack also has a version combines the instruments from another soundtrack.

A moment that gets underrated is that primal animal monologue sendo goes through at the end where even though he has been defeated he refuses to break eye contact with Ippo, the man who defeated him
This Anime clearly got all the small things right. It's the inner monologue & side commentary that makes these fights so enthralling! We literally get to know these characters as we go. It's a brilliantly written Anime!
And how bout that Soundtrack? Man, whoever did the score for this deserves an award!

@SwayDante We also have a completely kickass dub in Spanish here in Mexico. There's something about Mexican voice actors doing voices and sound effects for stuff about boxing, it just stands out. You can clearly see how much they enjoy doing the dub and how much feeling and effort they poured into making each punch sound legit

Ive hit my head hard before so i know exactly what hes talking about. You literally just feel so sleepy and tired. You dont care if its the cold hard ground, the lust of drowsiness completely overwhelms you to the point where it takes ALL your effort just to keep your consciousness and a single moment of losing focus or a thought drifitng for a split second it all it takes for lights out, and youre not coming back until your body says its coming back.
It's a sensual URGE to just rest and f*king DIE (figuratively). Its nothing like sleep deprivation, ive stayed up for over 48hrs before and it takes physical strength to stay awake and keep your eyes open, but that is more a physical sensation which uou can only resist as long as your eye lid muscles have the energy. Getting knocked out is completely different becausw its not muscle fatigue but more the mental/physiological URGE to just rest. Its like feeling incredibly honry for sleep. And its SO easy to satisfy because all you need to do is just stop holding on...just for a literal split second and you'll be gone 😂
