    I simultaneously enjoy reading:
    - A classic book
    - A non-fiction book, and
    - A lighter book (can be YA, or even a coffee table book- it just sometimes gets me out of a reading slump.)
Right now I am reading War and Peace, Origins of Totalitarianism by Hannah Arendt, and I just finished a book about how penguin book covers are designed

Much props to you! Reading Tolstoy alongside Arendt? I think if Emma Goldman was alive today you’d be the new runner up for the “greatest anti-patriot”. Good work! :) All kidding aside Arendt is an important read and I look forward to Tolstoy.

I think your channel is fairly unique for BookTube. There seem to be more female BookTubers and most people who are on BookTube discuss current works or a mixture of classics and contemporary work. It’s refreshing to see someone focus on the classics. Keep it up! I’m almost ready for War & Peace....😱😳😎. I’ve at least secured my copy...🤣

Your channel taking off so quickly has a few reasons I guess. There seems to be a demand for your type of content - classic works of fiction and non-fiction. You are presenting this literary heritage with a mixture of curiosity and respect and the viewer is motivated to pick up a book himself immediately. Well, I do.

You'll love the Boswell. It's a huge book, and a classic, but it's also a blast! A fun, fast read. When I was your age, or maybe a bit younger, Maugham was my favorite short story writer. I had his complete short stories in several volumes. I can also recommend John Collier and Ray Bradbury. When I was an LAPD civilian, I worked with a cop I called " the cop who reads ", because he was working his way through the classics of the Western Canon. You know, Sophocles - check, Don Quixote -check. Anyway his favorite play was Othello. When I told him that I found Iago to be pretty inexplicable, his take was, " He was just a guy who had been passed over once too often. ". He was speaking from the culture of an organization that is perceived to deny promotions to deserving candidates. I have my doubts, but I've never forgotten his comment.

  • @alittax

When I read something that I might want to read again later, I stick a post-it on the page. For example, monster descriptions in Lovecraft, or poetical descriptions in Hugo's Toilers of the Sea. Or, when there are cool drawings in the book. Another tip: if a book is published in different volumes, I put a thick rubber band around the volumes, so that they don't get lost. I also do that if I have multiple translations of the same work. Note however that rubber can get dehydrated and break, but that didn't damage any of my books.

First, I need to mention that the set up for this video is so comforting for the eyes, it made me wish the video would be longer.
The important thing now. It makes me really happy your channel is growing so fast, because your content is so unique and interesting, as well as it's really clear that you love what you talk about. I trully enjoy watching your videos, most of all because you read almost the same books that i do (or the ones i would like to read in the future).
Finally, i would like to recomend to you two south-american authors that wrote AMAZING short stories: Clarice Lispector and Jorge Luis Borges. I love every piece of work that i ever read of the two of them, but i think my favourite Borges is "Tlön, Uqbar, Orbis Tertius" (i really believe you would love this one) and my favourite story from Lispector is "Daydream and drunkenness of a young lady".
I hope you are doing well!

Thank you for the kind words! I will definitely check all of these authors out. South American literature is a blind spot for me in regards to my reading and I am looking to change that as soon as possible. I was in a thrift store recently and picked up Don Casmurro by Machado de Assis. That will probably be the next work of fiction that I will be reading.

I feel like I am not qualified enough to be an English major because of your videos ✌️😔 -- Othello is on my reading list because I have a goal of reading all the novels/plays I read in high school. So far it's been such a fun (and surprisingly nostalgic) experience! It's so much better going back after a few years because you pick up nuances you missed before (for me because I barely read it back then) and, because you have that basis already, you really just gain further insight into the human condition from a variety of time periods and tales. Big fun! Highly recommend.

I am reading Frankenstein in the morning (after your recommendation :) ), Vonnegut's Breakfast of Champions before I go to bed, and some kind of nonfiction in the middle (most of the time for classwork). But I'm on the lookout for a good nonfiction book (that isn't self-help) that I can read on days I don't have college readings. The Peregrine seems interesting. But I read the synopsis and it sounds like someone becomes a hawk. So is it fiction?

Man, i wish I could be this interested in non-fiction and plays 😂. Question though, do you ever struggle with staying engaged with a book? If so, how do you deal with that?

Oh I struggle with staying engaged with a book almost every other week. I used to feel guilty when I would quit a book but life is too short to read books you don't want to read. It's extremely important to read outside of your comfort zone, however, sometimes you come across a book that you just don't click with and the best option is to just put the book down and pick up a different one.

@@drunzo363 Thank you so much. besides, I would like to get your authority to translate your videos into Chinese and publish on the Chinese website, I love your video so much and I believe more Chinese people should know you and follow you and get started reading classics. Is that OK ?

Might be a question you answer a lot but how fast do you read/how many pages a day you read?

I enjoy nonfiction in the morning and fiction at night with some Earl Grey tea or Bourbon and water...it must be a middle-aged thing. LOL.
