One thing to consider is the preamp on your camera. Camera preamps tend to be noisy. What I've seen that works well is turning down the gain on the camera and boosting it in the receiver, mic or both. As far as your signal drop goes, I'm not sure the output power difference in the USA vs other countries but you shouldn't have had any problems at that distance. I've used mine at over 450 feet 137 meters. That being said it was line of site so the transmitter was on my belt in front of me, facing the camera. At 2.4ghz your body is very effective at shielding radio signals. I've used body shielding in the past in doing RDF to find transmitters. One advantage is the onboard recording. Even if you do have a drop it's easy to use the audio you do have to sync in post. I'll also say, you shouldn't have much difference in sound quality between the onboard recording and the over the air recording. That makes me think your camera preamp or levels are part of your problem.
I waited two years to own one of these and I think it's the best wireless mic set up hands down with zero interference but I live in the arctic so maybe less radio signals around to interfere? I love how I'm never wasting time pairing I'm just shooting. ❤
pairing works great. there is so much I love about this system. Do you lose connection when facing away from the receiver? I wonder if we have a unit with maybe lower signal strength in Europe? that's just a guess of course but I can imagine this could be a thing 😅
@@davidvongries Zero issues so far and that includes a gig in the city of Edmonton with the receiver a good hundred feet away from the transmitters indoors and out. Sorry to hear your are having trouble.
Those receiving a product before release often receive early samples that can change later. For example the different cable that you mention: you can see in the dji forum that there is an official statement saying that they changed the cable to a more sturdier one and not angled because that created interference problems when bent. So the one you received is actually better then the one in the early samples.
I'm not sure if that new cable is the solution then. It's way too short and just not practical. In fact, I remember having issues with the cable too, where I lost the audio signal for a short period of time. (Could have been something else, but I didn't have the issue with the other cable that I used).
I use +6DB on both the Transmitter & Receiver on iPhone. Works VERY well with those settings. I also use the Rode Smart Lav+ with the setup. Works VERY well.
I’m know I’m a little late here, but I wish the DJI Mic receiver came with a Mic input. I record voice audio from the transmitters but would also like environmental audio from another external microphone
The main problem I have with these units is that the INTERNAL recording on the Transmitters keeps loosing frames and shifting the audio to the left of the timeline. The Internal recording should be rock solid as there is nothing impeding it from loosing audio. I have 2 Receivers and 4 transmitters (actually I bought a 3rd set, so now I have 3R and 6T) I sent both receivers I had and all 4 transmitters for this very issue. They said they had fixed the issue. Very next gig, same issue. Every 6 minutes or so, 9.5 frames gets removed from internal recording and audio shifts 9.5 frames to the left. In a pinch when the Camera Recording gets interference, I can re-sync things if it doesn't happen when the audio got lost on the internal recording, but it's sure a pain the ass to have to re-sync something that should only be done once. THIS IS A MAJOR FLAW WITH THESE UNITS and DJI needs to either fix it, or have a warning on their product advertisement that internal recording is not frame accurate.
Quick update. Apparently the firmware v02.00.72.87 released on 2023.01.04 should fix the internal recording issues. Weird because when my units came back, they didn't have the latest update. I haven't tested this because it takes a long time to test something like this and I don't have time. But if anyone else is having this issues, you should try updating to this firmware. As per the release notes: " Fixed issue: transmitter audio data was occasionally lost when recording for a long time"
Quick Update: I tested for 29minutes on my A7iii and my 6 DJI Mic Transmitters. It looks like all my audio files are synced properly throughout the 29 minutes (which is the limit of the camera) after applying the new firmware. The only weird thing was that my transmitter #5 stopped recording after 10 mins 35 sec???
i kinda like the sound in video. for what it is looks like a good deal, doing one man operation where shotgun mic is not ideal in all scenarios and i dont have 4 arms to slso run around with boom.
Hello Sir, Thanks for this review. At first was really confused if I'll go with this Dji or Rode wireless go 2 but after seeing this I'm aiming towrds rode. Hello David I just got this mic 4 days ago I unboxed it just by uploading the video on my channel in my native language only for studio use ...... sound is really not so good may be my settings were intially not set. but I checked the this mic outdoor and went away from the receiver 200 to 250 meters away when I turned my face over the camera it really loose connection and I also checked this rode wireless go 2 mic at same place and I walk away from camera and receiver more then 200 meters and turned the face over the receiver honestly rode was awesome. you can check my video about rode wireless go 2 I swear that I did not used the backup audio that is the real audio I grabbed in my a6400 camera. But I am so dissappointed with dji mic I went away from camera and at 15 meters it starts loosing connection omg. what a waste of money on Dji really so heart broken.
I'm glad that you are pleased overall. I'm considering buying the DJI and your video helped for things to consider. I didn't see anything that would keep me from purchasing it, but I hope DJI listens to feedback. Swapping out for a better cable would be very inexpensive for them to do and worth it for customer satisfaction. If I do buy it, I'll probably feed the audio into my Fuji and use that as a guide, then synch up the DJI recorded audio as the final source.
Thanks for the video. I did so many tests and I am still not satisfied with the sound quality. For me the background whispering (white) noise is too loud. I hear it as well in your video at 7:20. Maybe my expectations were to high. I just expected the clean crispy audio.
One of the selling points for me on the DJI mic is the ability to have the receiver face frontwards since I do a lot of solo recording. As you pointed out the supplied cable is not long enough to reach the camera mic input in this position. Like you, I had to use a different cable. DJI should seriously consider supplying the mic with a longer cable. It takes a bit of experimenting to get the right audio settings and they will vary depending on the brand of camera.

I don't remember but just did a quick test. To my surprise, the receiver does actually remember the level set in the transmitter, even if the transmitter is turned off. I recorded 2 tracks: one at -12db and another one at +12. Both have the same amount of white-noise after leveling the tracks and similar to my tests in this video, the boosted track comes out a bit hotter & cleaner in the higher frequencies. I think I would go with +5db.
Hi, I want to use these mic with Yamaha mixer and Bose speakers in our Auditorium. Do you think there will be a feedback problem or whistle noise. Thanks :)
specifically using these with the dji action 3 I have noticed a pretty substantial audio desync its starts out fine then as time goes on the audio get more and more out of sync. But only when I use the wireless receiver. if I record directly to the mic and line everything up in post it works flawlessly, kind of a bummer thou cause that would save me a substantial amount of time if I didn't need to sync every clip

Because iPhones only have one port so if your mic is plugged into it you get no sound. This is the case no matter what external mic you use. Just a limitation of the iPhone.
Hey David. Thanks for the heads up with these issues. I was about to buy either the Rode NTG4 or the DJI wireless mic. Now I'm not so sure. Mics themselves are mono. Also, it may be your SGN10 that has some limitations on sound recording over USB-C. Anyway, making a single-channel sound into a dual-channel (not a true stereo - but true stereo is usually more of a nuisance than any good) in Premiere is a matter of literally three mouse clicks: right-click on your audio on timeline, select Audio channels and then set checkboxes to two L (or two R), then OK. That will give you a two-channel audio. It might be a discovery for many, but sound in professional broadcasting is mono at all times, just split into two channels.

Yea, I don't see me using this thing. I wish they had sticked to the pouch they had earlier which was much higher quality (but I guess also more expensive to produce).
I know this mic has a magnet to help you attach it under your clothes, but can you attach that magnet to any metallic surface (e.g: car), like what the DJI Action 2 did?
I have the DJI mic. I like it. That's crazy how it was cutting out at such a short distance. It would have been back in the box and returned if I had that issue. I also use the Comica mic. I think I like the sound better from it but the versatility from the DJI is great. I dunno....
It's quite dissatisfing when DJI state on their Tx/rx range = 250 metres when this subject was only 12/15 metres away and drop outs were already happening.
I have just noticed that yours have interference on a short distance if you turn the back to the receiver. Shame no one tell the truth about them. You only can use them as recorders not transmiters
This is another bummer. I saw videos where people were like 200 meters away, behind trees with no issues. I'm literally 10 meters away, not facing the camera and lose connection.
@@davidvongries i was filming a wedding and the registrar was 3 m away facing the other way and lost the signal every minute... Thanks for the reply. They getting money and have the staff for free from DJI and other companies they do the reviews
Yes. Every 6 minutes or so, the internal recording looses about 9.5 frames and the audio shifts over to the left of the timeline. This essentially the basic function of this device and it seems it cannot perform it properly. This happened before on my 2 sets (4 transmitters, 2 receivers) I didn't know which exactly was doing it so I send them both in. They came back with a good bill of health. But the next gig, same thing happened. The audio from the receiver going into the camera is perfectly synced. The internal audio keeps getting un-synced every 6 minutes or so. :( NOT GOOD. :(
Received mine yesterday and immediately noticed the hard-as-a-rock cable that literally no one ever mentioned. Funny. Second thing is the sound quality. In the end, it's a consumer and not a pro product. I prefer pro and, therefore, might return it.
Do have any Idea why you are losing connection? I also had the same issue even on few meters. Which is weird seeing all those reviewers testing it far away.
It only happend for me when I was not facing the camera. But as you said, others didn't seem to have that problem either. I saw people 100m away behind trees with no issues :D Well...
hello David. Thanks for your critical review. I got my DJI Mic too and I’m just trying to work out the perfect settings. My voice is loud and deep and I’m having problems with clipping. I already reduced the gain to -2 on my transmitter but im still hearing clipping now and then. I just released a video about the DJI Mic where im talking about that. Does anyone have any good ideas on how to go about that? Thanks 🙌🏼
@@davidvongries I’m using the receiver with my iPhone, mostly stock app. I don’t think it’s possible there. Maybe if I’d use filmic pro, it must be possible but I think there must be a way to get the settings right on the DJI Mic side. How are you handling this?
-2 might not be enough of a reduction. When I tested the mic in a confined area (very echoey), I had to turn the transmitter gain down to -9 before the meter on the receiver looked like it was no longer clipping. I listened to the recording from the camera and it sounded really good.
so maybe dji company just changed everything because of the over demands of the product. As far as i know dji got huge numbers of advance sells orders and still so many people didn't get it. maybe dji is now giving different cheaper product (low quality) with the same name and making more profits out of it. what do you think.
Actually it seems it was not the firmware update, It seem like the DJI Mic cannot record stereo audio into the iPhone. If this is true it is a tragic flaw and I'm truly upset that I bought this system. Please tell me I'm wrong about this. Thank you.
I'm still in my testing phase with these mics and have noticed the muffled sound when recording outdoors, with the mic clipped into my shirt, someone described it as the mic canceling the noise in the background which was a good description because it does isolate your voice a good bit, but it's not a clean crisp sound. I also noticed that when the mic is underneath my mouth clipped to my shirt pocket vs directly in front of my mouth(like me holding it in my hand a few inches from my face) the audio can sound muffled. However when I have the mic in front of me, the audio does sound quite clean and crisp. Give that a try, starting with the transmitters(mics) and receiver at 0 db, before increasing either. See if that works better for you.
I just tested the Vimo C - It's an interesting alternative to the DJI Wireless MIC. You can check out the review here: ruclips.net/video/R6vqNCcOpM4/видео.html

Why is no one talking about the loss of signal within 5m. For a professional doing interviews, I’m hiding the mic and the signal loss is so bad im moving to another system. So disappointed in DJI
The different cable was apparently added to reduce some of the interference issues that was happening, according to another yt video. Hopefully dji continues to massage these issues.

I got my dji wireless system in May. I got the cheaper bag like you and have the stiff cable. We actually use the system mostly using the transmitters as a backup, so just using the transmitters as if using for a "backup" recording. They make a popping sound then be muffled, then will have very clear crisp audio, then sounds like someone has cupped their hands around it, very muffled, then back to very crisp sound. We've been trying to see if anyone else having this issue or if I need to return ours. Thanks for a real video.

It's quite dissatisfing when DJI state on their Tx/rx range = 250 metres when this subject was only 12/15 metres away and drop outs were already happening.
The signal cut out was insane! Never have that with rode
Actually I had even worse with Rode, Saramonic and even Sennheiser (not one or two but many different systems - analog, digital, 2.4 and not...)...
They getting money and have the staff for free from DJI and other companies they do the reviews
anyone have issues with skipping on standalone tx recordings?
@@davidvongries I also have had no issue with dropout and was surprised you did from such a short distance.
hello David. Thanks 🙌🏼
where do you have the mic plugged into? can you lower the input value there?
@@davidvongries I’m using the receiver with my iPhone, mostly stock app. I don’t think it’s possible there. Maybe if I’d use filmic pro, it must be possible but I think there must be a way to get the settings right on the DJI Mic side. How are you handling this?
-2 might not be enough of a reduction. When I tested the mic in a confined area (very echoey), I had to turn the transmitter gain down to -9 before the meter on the receiver looked like it was no longer clipping. I listened to the recording from the camera and it sounded really good.
@@AspieMoto thank you. That sounds like an option. I will consider it next time i try it.
same for my copy of the DJI Mic
so maybe dji company just changed everything because of the over demands of the product. As far as i know dji got huge numbers of advance sells orders and still so many people didn't get it. maybe dji is now giving different cheaper product (low quality) with the same name and making more profits out of it. what do you think.
Experiencing 2 problems so far
1. Loosing connection
2. Internal recording jump cuts
Actually it seems it was not the firmware update, It seem like the DJI Mic cannot record stereo audio into the iPhone. If this is true it is a tragic flaw and I'm truly upset that I bought this system. Please tell me I'm wrong about this. Thank you.
Sounds great at plus 10
Hey, thanks for the video!! Did you find any solution on the connection problem? mine is losing connection all the time.
I haven't found a solution for that unfortunately. I just try to stay close to the camera/receiver and don't turn around.
See if that works better for you.
thank you for sharing these tips, I'll give it a try!
I just tested the Vimo C - It's an interesting alternative to the DJI Wireless MIC. You can check out the review here: ruclips.net/video/R6vqNCcOpM4/видео.html
"Link to the test I'm referring to down in the video description"
Not in the description.
Thanks! I was about to buy this mic but seeing your video I will go for Rode Go 2.
They had noise issues with the 90degree bend
Same me
Know all the innovations
Take a test How to get into the car and keep the doors closed There should be no running sound, only talking right I hope you post a video
Same for me. I dont use it because its so muffled. Nothing I have done has changed anything
Car 🚗 noise check me Monitor on Car start without noise sound running sound should not come DJI MICROPHONE WIRELESS yes I hope you post a video
Thank you for sharing. I'm not buying this one.
I do voice when playing with toys and characters. I want the best quality mic. Indoor and outdoor
Move around to create a story...
Will be using android phone
I got my dji wireless system in May. I got the cheaper bag like you and have the stiff cable. We actually use the system mostly using the transmitters as a backup, so just using the transmitters as if using for a "backup" recording. They make a popping sound then be muffled, then will have very clear crisp audio, then sounds like someone has cupped their hands around it, very muffled, then back to very crisp sound. We've been trying to see if anyone else having this issue or if I need to return ours. Thanks for a real video.
Hey there. Appreciate your videos. I have a problem since I updated the firmware on the dji mic, I cannot switch between mono and stereo mode. It's stuck on mono. Any suggestions? Thanks much!
Hi there David what’s your thoughts between the DJI mic and the Rod mic that’s the original Rod mics I would love to here your Opinion
the Rode Wireless Go you mean? I never owned one unfortunately so I can't speak on that.
