Most disturbing "person eating a tomato" footage since The Return of the King.
I bet John Noble also feels nauseous at the thought of eating a tomato now too ^_^
I know exactly what Return of the king reference you're making lol
Good to know it wasn't just me who hated that part 😆
@@grimnirnacht oh man. The gooshy squirt🤢
Pip's song was pretty good though.. Although those tomatos were disturbing fr
The AFAB joke is probably the greatest trans joke I've ever seen
10/10. Cackled maniacally.
It was 😂 Though, at the risk of sounding snippy, it's a small field!
@@bbbb98765 It's so bizarre as well considering that, as many trans people will point out it is an experience brimming with the potential for humour.
Contrapoints made a great case for it when describing the inherent absurdity of existing as a trans person. Where there is pain, there is endless material for comedy.
There's loads of great trans comedy out there! Jordan Grey, Robin Tran- even Suzy Izzard's old stuff about "un travestie executif". You don't have to rely on my comparatively poor offering ^_^
You made a funny, own it! (but if course you're going to provide other sources!)
It was a brilliant joke!
The "it's much easier to contribute to human knowledge when you don't have to worry about money" line is painfully true lol.
That's one of the big pushes bein' used for UBI actually.
Think about how much time we've lost just chasing paychecks. It's a new dark age and that's really depressing 😅
Yes!!!!!
What I'm hearing is "Eat the rich... For science!"
"Assigned Female After Burial" 🤗
"Older than Spider Web, Older than Flowers" that really puts things into context so well. 😲
kinda renminds me of the epic of gilgamesh
A:"yeah, this story is old"
B:"how old"
A:"older than bread, dude"
@@oan1249 "Buddy, my story is so old, it is part of the pre-oral tradition!" 😄😄😄👍
I saw that as well! I think context is great. I watch a lot of science channels and I've rarely seen them do that. Especially reminding us that there was no Atlantic ocean, that all the continents were fused together and the location where, say, the UK might have been back there (which is further South than now). She's doing something more specialist channels forget to do here. I"m brand new to her videos, and I noted it immediately.
@@oan1249 But they did have bread in Sumer...? Lots of different kinds, in fact. The Epic of Gilgamesh even explicitly mentions bread within the text, so I'm not sure where you got that idea from.
@@snr0nim talking about the story that the epic of gilgamesh tells. It indeed references bread, specifically, it's invention.
Fun fact, Mary Buckland was just 2 years older than the more famous British paleontologist named Mary, Mary Anning after whom the "she sells sea shells" nursery rhyme is based. I presume they must have known each other. It can't be that big a community of female British paleontologists in the early 19th century.
EDIT: I googled it. They definitely knew each other. William Buckland bought at least one of the famous "seashells" she sold by the sea shore. A pterodactyl bone.
Yes, according to "The Life and Correspondence of William Buckland" (1894) they took their children on holiday to Lyme Regis "and made them acquainted with the local celebrity Mary Anning".
There's actually no good evidence that the tongue twister has any historical association with Mary Anning. It got connected to her more recently.
How did I never put together that the rhyme refers to Mary Anning??
@@impishDullahan It's a tounge twister, not a rhyme. But I'm just being pedantic there.
I love this! I've been thinking about researching a game of civ with leaders who all knew (or could have known) each other, the symmetry is so pleasing
"Collecting fossils, you know like a normal teenager"... *hides fossile collection I found on the beachs when I was a teenager
I've never not had rocks in my pockets or whatever basket I'm carrying❤
On a high school trip to Italy I collected rocks and sand and seeds all week long✨
As the child of a field zoologist, eating the subject of your study at least once was still pretty normal at least into the 1980s, so Buckland's strange habits actually don't seem too far out of the norm.
Wonderful video as always!
What a weird thing. I'm a software guy working in the middle of nowhere in west Texas; I have no idea why I clicked on one of these videos, I guess it was a year ago, and then got sucked in and started binge watching them. It brightens my day to see new ones posted. Thank you for putting so much effort and creativity and, yeah, 'heart' into these.
The moment I saw the title, I knew it was about william Buckland. Don't ask why, the victorian era was my special interest for a long time.
I knew the AFAB joke was coming and it still made me LOL. You are very funny and I really hope you become the next Lucy Worsley.
La Worsley is sickly sweet. J Draper is a LOT more caustic. And all the better for that
I love how you mention the women who’s contributions are often forgotten by historians.
Madame Draper, your value of production and storytelling. Exceeds and exceeds!!!!!
You're right, I did fall into your trap, but like Buckland, you got some things wrong. I see J. Draper and I insta click, because I'm going to learn some history, as told in a throughly entertaining manner. I don't really care what the episode's descriptor line is. It's the J. Draper part that hooks me, and sometimes the episodes tag line will help reel me in. I guess you could say " You had me at J. Draper."
This. A thousand times this…
"J. Draper talks about the foundational figures in paleontology for like 20 minutes each" is a video I'd click on no problem TBH.
Same
Agreed
I need to say thank you. With this, you have solved, for me, the conundrum of why Audubon ate all the birds. Most likely for the same, sound, Victorian, scientific purpose.
Yep, you got me. I clicked to find out why the heart of a king was left unburied, but stayed because I was learning about a dinosaur discovered 200 years ago!
So, I subscribed for the shorts, I won't lie about that, but this, this is what I was hoping for when I decided I wanted to see what more could come from you as a creator.
This is so well produced, well edited, and appropriately paced. An excellent piece of science communication presented within the context important to the subject matter.
This is so good J, please, please keep this up. I'm so excited to see where and how you grow and the topics you cover, especially with your unique life experiences guiding how you present them.
Thanks for the video, more please!
all of this
Absolutely and wholeheartedly agree. This is great stuff!
🎯🎯🎯🎯🎯
So well presented! (Never wanted to be famous. What people remember about you...)
And the interlude about the Jurassic Period... *chef's kiss * "Older than spiderwebs, older than flowers" is going to stick with me
The older than spiderwebs line is golden!
He was the first true geology professor! Funny jokes, silly behavior, many field trips, random classes outside, rocks everywhere. Amazing! 😁
You are an amazing story teller! And I'm here going all 😍 over these two people sharing a passion in a burgeoning research field finding each other and building a life together with fossils, guniea pigs and elaborate dinner parties.
The Habsburg Emperor-Kings were buried in the family crypt in Vienna but their hearts were buried in Pannonhalma Monastery.
This was awesome. And now I desperately want to see you as a Doctor Who villain! ❤
I came, not because of the title, but because it was brand new, fresh video from the wonderful J Draper. And I thoroughly enjoyed the AFAB joke. The history stuff was okay. (grin)
You're a fantastic storyteller!
We know so much more than Buckland because the great people like Buckland studied the Nature before us.
You must be the best tour guide ever. Love your show it's a highly underappreciated gem. ♥️
I know, right?! If I ever have the chance to visit London, I'd loveeee to book her as a tour guide all around London!
‘Your Inner Fish’ by Neil Shubin is a great book on how human bodies came to be as they are now.
Highly recommended and fascinating!
AFAB joke is funny too! 😂
Great book suggestion. I've just ordered it. Thank you.
I feel like I've watched a few of your longer videos and this is more cinematic than i remember them being? Simply amazing.
The AFAB joke made me spit my water out
"Haviland Man says trans rights."
Love this line. Incredible vid so far, never knew about this bit of history before and I am already engrossed. Back to watching now.
HOW IS YOUR PACING SO GOOD?! Seriously, well done. This is everything I didn't know I needed. Thank you!
This story would have make such a good Halloween special, still glad to have it now though :)
I didn't need a quirky title to watch this. It's a Jenny Draper video; I'm all over it! ❤
Your blend of humor, research, and editing is extraordinary. Thank you for sharing your talents with us and developing such a fascinating channel!
No historical visual quite makes me laugh more than the idea of the Bucklands staring enraptured at a turtle very slowly walking across their kitchen table.
😂 I don't need a click baity title or thumbnail, I just see J. Draper and I'm like oh I love them ❤
I appreciate your authentic Jurassic headscarf - it really transports us into the past! :)
J. Draper is slowly becoming the Bri'ish Atun Shei, and i'm here for it !
When he says he's eaten a bluebottle, which type? There's a few different types of animal that can be referred to by that name.
The fly
The jellyfish (siphonophore)
and ??
I want to know the others
@@riverAmazonNZ Blow-flies, Portuguese man o' war, Blue ant (confusingly named wasp), Graphium sarpedon (butterfly), cornflower and a term for police officers.
AMAZING story telling...
PRICELESS 👏👏👏👏👏👏👏
WONDERFUL video (as usual)
😎😎😎😎😎😎😎
The Jurassic ad was hilarious! It's not just a park anymore!
Keep making these vids, they're excellent. I love your work.
I like falling into your traps. I inevitably learn something new if not completely bizarre. Cee from the little haunted cottage in ireland 💚💚💚🍀🍀🍀
I hate it when people take wonderful and wacky true stories from history that I learned from reliable and authoritative sources and ruin them with excellent research.
Great video.
Fantastic production quality and delivery. First time I've watched anything but a short.
Who knew old French kings hearts looked like tomatoes?
A great video. I'd heard lots of snippets about Buckland, but this was a marvelous telling of his life and work.
It's the pickling that makes them look like that
You’re so so good at this. I understand why you do what you do. Funny and entertaining
i am an autistic 18 year old so I'm not sure what would count as "weird" or "gross" but i enjoy collecting my teeth as well as the teeth of my friends which they give me as a gift (i love my friends so much
I mean this in the best way possible, you sound like a serial killer
The YT algorithm has been sending me your shorts for a while and I've really liked them, so finally checking out your channel. I love your style and delivery. It's really fresh, lively, witty. You could teach anything and it wouldn't be boring. Subscribed.
The patreon appeal was genius. 🙃
That was the best plug for a patreon!
You'll be pleased to know that the ad before the video was for a food delivery service. They didn't specifically say they can deliver the heat of a king, but I'm pretty sure it was implied.
This was fantastic! Learn a lot and almost fell out of my chair laughing!!! 😂😂😂 Love these longer videos. Looking forward to more!
One of the best presenters on RUclips.
Enthusiastic and engaging without being cloying. (Too many go too far.)
Great production, editing, and writing too. Love the set and lighting, also audio.
Image is a touch soft, but perhaps that's a creative decision.
Someday I will visit London, and when I'm there, I will hire you forever. You're too amazing to be allowed.
J.Draper,you are brilliant and adorable.
I didn't click because of the title. I clicked because it was a J. Draper video.
Would love to see a video on historical sauces, incidentally.
I am an astronomy nut, And love to read about science.
I'm watching your channel to improve my knowledge of history. So surprise, surprise here I get a science lecture.
And not just any science lecture an extraordinarily good one.
Brought to you by the Jurassic period. That one had me literally LOL.
Splendid job, If you ever tired history being a science explainer is a career path that is definitely open to you.
This is, in my opinion, your best video yet. I thoroughly enjoyed it.
J Draper: You fool! You've fell into my trap! Me: and I'm honestly having such a good time!
It's hard not to click on your videos, well done, very entertaining
I really appreciate how instead of stopping at the 'wow this guy ate weird stuff' bit, you did attempt to reason out why that might have been the case. Too many shock and awe storytellers out on the internet, we need logic now more than ever!
"He brings maps and drawrings. .." Love it!
Love the term Georgeian paleontologist , a relic unto itself? Interesting presentations , thanks for the history. 👍
I have a background in geology 30 odd years ago, so this biography of Buckland was a pleasant surprise for me.
Thank you for this educational content.🥰
9:09 I love that your patreon information fits so neatly into the story of the guy known as “The Man Who Ate Weird Things”! Well done, J Draper!
I have to admit that the thumbnail for the video actually kept me from clicking on it for the longest time as it's seemed TOO sensational. However, the quality of your other videos finally drove me to finally see what this was all about and what do I find but a story of geology?! As a geologist, and worse as a Fellow of the Geological Society(!), I am now suitably chagrined that I knew next to nothing about Buckland! Thank you for this wonderful review of his his discoveries!
Love the picture of the hounds having a banquet. LOL Really like your wonderful voice, as it keeps one interested and enamored.
I admire that you tricked people into further education. Well played J. Draper.
“…but my favorite thing about history is to fathom them”
GOD YOU ARE AMAZING
Thank you. I didn't watch this for a while because of the title. But now you have made want to look farther into this fellow.
I recently started uni and met a lovely lass from Australia. She had never had steak and kidney pie before. Okay, fine. But then she said "I was scared to try it, but it was actually pretty good. I didn't taste any wee." And I was so confused. Why did she think - ooohhhhhh... I then went on to study my confusion at her assumption and completely overthink it all afternoon. Is this why there is so much prejudice about other cultures food? What does it all mean? That stereotype about Chinese people eating dogs, my granddad's confusion at my liver and bacon casserole, my friends confusion at my curried ox heart. It all makes sense now, it's lack of exposure to good food from around the world!
And, of course, Mary Moreland is probably not remembered as well despite her contributions allowing him to publish, etc.
He ate a bluebottle!? That’s truly insane. The thought of eating a venomous jellyfish made my skin crawl.
I ate his liver, with fava beans ( broad beans), and with a fine Chianti ~ fuff-fuff-fuff, Clarice.
I am Welsh too, 'Tony' Hopkins. 🙃
How can someone be so good at making videos?
Typically fantastic. I much enjoy your history stories. Keep up the great work 😃🎉
That Mary lady sounds super cool! I'd love to have a bunch of critters running around my paid for house lol
You are the single coolest content creator on the entire platform
As a geologist who's background is in paleontology, I approve! Scientists are still eating weird things; some archeologists and paleontologists who found a cache of mammoth meat that ancient people had wrapped and put in a swamp to preserve, cooked some of the meat and tried it. Apparently it didn't taste great, but was worth doing just to say they did it!
Just for the record I click because you have a way of making learning fun that I enjoy. You are the kind of person I would love to have conversations with. Thank you for being you.
Not sure which historical sauces we learned about since there were no bizzarre-meat recipe details but other than that, another excellent video and fully justified click-bait. I seriously really love this channel.
you are such a GOOD storyteller!
seriously: i love your unironed shirt. eff ironing.
That might be the smoothest patreon plug I've ever seen
Oddly enough, I didn't come for the title. The title actually scared me off at first, and it was only while looking through your videos for more interesting facts and history that I gave this one a go.
I am thoroughly pleased I did :)
what a mighty stimulating presentation you've brought to the table tonight lady J! i sure know i enjoyed it a good deal
One of those eating shots is strikingly reminiscent of Kenneth Anger 😁😁
I can totally see it: Buckland eyes the heart specimen, owner teases him about wanting to eat it, Buckland laughs it off, with "haven't gone that far, yet." Owner says, "good thing it's not the Sun King."... A gaslighter and a couple gossips later and Buckland is a Royal Cannibal.
Buckland was quite a character. Your sponsor was fabulous as was the "older than" bit. I absolutely love your videos.
As someone who only watched your shorts before: DAMN is your production quality good
Very well done, and enjoyable! Thank you! Regards from Canada 🇨🇦
Loving this episode. Thanks J!
That truly was an outstanding episode! Thank you very much :)
Enjoyed this video very much, thank you!
Simply your best production to date, amazing!
Bravo! What a fantastic episode !
Always love your videos!
this channel is pure gold
Great video as always !!! Thanks 😊
Fantastic video - well done!!!
I could listen to you talk all day!!
