The reason your tree lights are flickering is basically because they run off mains-power which is AC or alternating current meaning they turn on and off very quickly tens of times a second (enough so you can't see it) but your camera when filming takes individual frames and if the frame rate is the same or quicker than the frequency of the lights, it will take some frames with the lights on and some off. The easiest way to correct it is to change the frame rate you record at, I don't know if you can do it through the apple camera, but I'm sure if you have a quick search you should be able to find an app which allows you to adjust frame rate if you want to.

5 inks only, and ones I have... Hmmm... I LIKE my generally boring standards. Parker Quink black. (I have it in 1940s microfilm black. 😁) Parker Quink brown (either washable or permanent. Hasn't been made since WWII.) Sheaffer Skrip red. Because it's what I currently have, Dickson's blue-black (again with vintage. This is a pretty standard iron gall blue-black.) Sheaffer Skrip purple. Honorable mention? Diamine Sherwood Green.

I saw the title and thought, what, why? You have so many beautiful inks. Why would you start over? Phew, so glad this was just a thought experiment! So for my hypothetical five; platinum carbon black and diamond writers blood we have in common. DeAtramentis Jane Austin, Iroshizuku kon-peki, and Private Reserve Sepia rounds out my five. But being limited to five, I think I would die a little inside every day a new ink comes out. Great video!

My favourite inks are Diamine Ancient Copper, Diamine Marine, Diamine Imperial Blue, Diamine Red Dragon (can you tell I live in the UK?!) and, just discovered and absolutely fantastic, Sailor Shikiori Kin-Mokusei, No-one ever seems to mention it, but it is the brightest, juiciest orange, with wonderful shading. Looking forward to hearing what your 5 start-over pens will be!

Not sure if youve had an answer to your question about the lights but it has to do with the speed of the camera taking pictures vs the frequency of your power. Basically see if you can change the shutter speed to a multiple whatevers coming out of the outlet (probably a multiple of 60)

Good list. I would choose my inks based on similar ideas but I came up with a different list.
    1. Pilot Iroshizuku Kon-Peki: A nice light blue with good properties. But it might be too light for certain tasks.
    2. Diamine Oxford Blue: This would be that dark blue which is always easy on the eyes and it is gorgeous on "official documents".
    3. Rohrer & Klingner Salix: This would be the permanent ink for me if I need it. Also easier to clean out than the Platinum Carbon black.
    4. Lamy Black: Nice dark black that is also easy to clean out. I don't use black that often but sometimes you need it.
    5. Montblanc Toffee Brown: I simply love that brown colour. No particular reason 😅.
    Take care ;)

I also love blacks that are blackblack and permanent. Platinum Carbon Black (PCB) is a gold standard but I'm not a huge fan of how shiny it is (a black sheen, perhaps?) that takes on the color of the light around you. This detracts from its blackness. I've found that both Noodler's Heart of Darkness and X-Feather are more matte black than PCB and Noodler's Black (but Noodler's is so inconsistent it is fair to say that your mileage WILL vary). Also, Platinum has come out with a darker version of PCB! It is called Platinum Chou Kuro.
Another fun permanent "black" ink is Diamine's Registrar's Blue-Black. It is a modern iron gall ink that goes on blue-black. The blue fades over time and you're left with the black. It is not a blackblack, however. There is some (IMO: fun) gray to black shading.
With all that said, one can't go wrong with PCB.

My answer changes if I am guaranteed to be able to get more of it when i run out. Because if so, Parker Ruby makes my list, if not, and tbh I would not do this to myself if I were getting into pens NOW, then it doesn't. Diamine Seize the Night is the closest I've found to filling the Ruby shaped hole in my heart even though they look nothing alike. It has the same softness. I don't know how else to put it. Tsuki-Yo (most hassle free ink ever made), Herbin Vert Empire, Colorverse Hayabusa Glistening, and Monteverde Fire Opal are the rest of my list. @Tiny Fibre Studio: you are correct - the flickering of the Christmas tree lights has to do with the frequency of the AC power coming to her house (I'm assuming North American standard 60 Hz) interacting with the frame rate of the video. Unfortunately, standard video frame rates are typically some "even" fraction of 60 (30 fps is typical). To to get rid of the flicker, she would have to go to either a really high frame rate (e.g. 120 fps) - which would result in an enormous file size - or go to a non-standard frame rate (which may be impossible given her video equipment).

Hmmm. Only five? Are you MAD? Well, that’s a different question. My must have, start fresh inks? Red category…I agree with Diamine Writer’s Blood. Out of the pen and onto the page it’s brilliant. A brown…cause I love browns…Noodler’s Walnut. Friendly and fool proof. Green? You totally missed green. I’m wounded. Whatever. Diamine November Rain for me and that’s three. Black. Yup. Gotta have it. So many great ones. Carbon Black is phenomenal. But for general purposes I’d go with Noodler’s Black. Blue? Diamine Jack Frost or Skull & Roses? No…I’ll go with Organics Studio Nitrogen. Killer. Now, a straight red. Diamine Red Dragon. So I NEED a number six…a Teal! Gotta have it. Purple? Oh…what to do? Well, rules are rules. Thanks for the fun.
Now you need to do a top five from specific makers…Diamine, Lamy, Noodler…etc.
PS: did you notice I cheated and picked six anyway? Bwwaaaahahaha!

    5) Iroshizuku Yama Budo
    Cheers!!!

Ooh what ink would I pair with Harney Hot Cinnamon? Picking only from inks I own, I'll go with Ancient Copper. For the other 4, I flipped through a journal to see which gave me the best legibility while still being a little bit interesting -- Herbin Poussière de Lune, Diamine Chocolate Brown, Diamine Twilight. For number 5 I pick a "party" ink - Robert Oster Fire & Ice.

If this were which single brand would I use if I had to, "Iroshizuku would be it. I love Diamine, Noodler's, and half a dozen or more other brands, but I don't think you can beat Iroshizuku as a writing brand filled with beautiful, well-behaved inks.

Great video. My five would be:
    Robert Oster Blue Water Ice
    Noodler's 54th Massachusetts
    Herbin Lie de The
    Herbin Poussiere de Lune
    Noodler's El Lawrence
I feel like I'm missing out on a "fun" ink, would probably pick Diamine Winter Spice for that but not sure I'd want to swap out any of the five for it. So many other inks I'd want to have though...

Is it just me, or does Ancient Copper show up a very large number of times in the comments? I've seen the same elsewhere. I knows it's one of my five favorite inks, and the only one that competes with James Purdey for journaling, but I didn't know it was as popular as it now seems to be. Right up there with Oxblood, which I love almost as much as Red Dragon.

I try to limit my inks to the basic colors and that they are quick drying as I am left handed.
I have searched for a black ink that, like you, is really black. I thought about the Platinum Carbon Black but have stayed away from it due to cleaning issues. So far the best I have come up with is Aurora Black. That may change as there is the Private Reserve Ultra Black that seems to be a contender.
As for blue I found Diamine Regency Blue and Iroshizuku asa-gao.
I do have one blue-black;. Robert Oster Thunderstorm. Fabulous color and quick drying.
I am still looking for a green. I have Conklin Kelly Green which is nice but I am looking for a darker green that is quick drying. Do you have any suggestions?
For red I chose Diamine Oxblood as it is quick drying.

    • @jamesaritchie1
      @jamesaritchie1 2 года назад +1

A few years ago, Auroa tested as the blackest black. I think it still is with dye based ink. But pigmented inks may have passed it. I hate black ink because I HAD to use it several hours per day for nearly twenty years. I also hate most blue inks because that was all we were allowed to use in school.

I gotta say it. I tried to bite my tongue, but I can't any longer. I found your choice of black deeeeeeeply underwhelming, given the hype. Three blacks hit the spot better for me. In reverse order:
    3. 🎖 Black
    2. 🥈 Namiki Black
    1. 🏅 Diamine Onyx Black

I don't know what's going on, it might be the caffeine...as you take another sip of your tea. 😂
If I was starting over with my current inks, it would be MB Psychedelic Purple, Ultramarine, Egyptian Blue, Pelikan 4001 - Turquoise and either MB Moctezuma, Victoria & Albert or Turquoise. The last three are all pretty similar and I haven't used them enough yet to know which one I'd choose.
...if I could get a vintage/previously used ink back, I'd trade Pelikan 4001 - Turquoise for Sheaffer Peacock Blue.

Let's see, let's see. Only what I have on hand? Hmmm...
If I was restricted to JUST five inks for the rest of time, I'd go with:
    1. Platinum Carbon Black.
    2. Platinum Blue-Black.
    3. Iroshizuku Ama-Iro.
    4. Diamine Terra Cotta.
    5. Noo... wait. No, DeAtr... Wait. MMMM! Urrgh! Screw it. Montblanc Toffee Brown.
In real life, there's no way I could restrict myself to five inks. I want a good blue-gray like DeAtramentis Document Fog Grey, a better good brown ink, a definite striking red like Montblanc Corn Poppy red (which I don't currently have). I'm not sure what else I'd HAVE to have. I could probably build a more satisfying list of 10 inks.
