🌽 Cornses 🌽 update 2020: Garden or Mini farm? The kids are involved

- Growing edible corn 🌽 it’s something I’ve been trying to do for years. We consulted our elders and truly feel like this year might be the year. Also we’re trying to figure out where the line between garden and mini farm is. What are your thoughts on that?
Random person to kids: "Why does your dad keep saying "cornses"?"
Kids: "I don't know. It makes him happy, just roll with it."
Nothing is more adorable than a grown adult trying to talk like a 4 year old.
Random person to dad: "Why is your son driving a "tractor"?"
Dad: "I don't know. It makes him happy, just roll with it."
:)
@@davemarm no bro, its creepy and pathetic. I like destins videos though, but its pathetic there is no way around that.

“They’re running tractors now” is the ultimate parenting goal
how old is that kid? is it legal for his age to drive a tractor? I must admit I’m shocked by the sight, but the fact that he’s putting this out in a yt video to the public confuses me even more because that indicates it’s fine and legal for kids to drive a tractor? what?
It would be fine by me to have a kid like that drive it with supervision on flat ground but I wouldn't want him to drive very close by people like he does do here. Although he probably knows what he's doing and has some experience with it by now.
@nobodyelse09 Okay, but the question still stands. Is it Legal for a 12ish yeah old to operate a tractor or what restrictions are there?
@@rudresh10000 There's a big difference between operating a tractor in a field where it's needed and there're no other motor vehicles, and on a road. I suspect most of the regulations pertain to road use.
@@alans1816 as far as i know its like that in germany, i drove the an tractor on the a farm when i was somthing like 7? as long as you stay of public space it should be fine.
Hey Destin! Just wanted to let you know that corn is pollinated best when grown in blocks. If you only have a few rows of corn the ears won't develop well. Because the crop is wind pollinated you need enough corn upwind of the rest of the block no matter which direction the wind is blowing. In rows, unless the wind is exactly parallel to your rows the pollen will blow away uselessly! If you have had trouble with corn in the past, that might be why
or you can cut the tops of several stalks of corn and "slap the cr*p" out of the tops of the other cornses...BE the wind!!
If you pause the video and look at the cornses package, they also suggest planting in blocks for better pollination.
At least 3 rows wide, spaced a foot apart with 3 seeds to a hole.
Just off memory.
Sadly where I live now I can only have a few raised bed plots, so not enough to grow corn. Get some good mators and peppers though.
My family had a lot of success with a 6ftx6ft raised bed that way. They were planted closer together than recommended but that gave us corn every night for several weeks to a month.
I was literally about to type this
If you fall asleep planting corn and worst case scenario, you get a sunburn, its gardening. (^.^)
If you fall asleep planting corn and worst case scenario you run over your sister, its farming (0.0)
If they happen at the same time it's farming.
Lmao
Skin cancer from UV tho
A Smarter Every Day about soil chemistry and growth cycles and plant biology would be neat. Maybe make it a whole series? Smarter Every Day: Farming? 👍 if you agree!
Last video: Let's talk about rocket engines in this rocket factory!
Today: Cornses :)
I love this channel
Sounds like Alabama
Yeah, pretty much sums up how I feel too.
looks as the opposite of smarter every day
My manses relationship with his kidses is the bestses.
You betses!
Wow, how those children have grown! I would ask what you feed'em but that is, I guess, the point of the video.
He feeds them Hello Fresh, obviously.
i hope when this is done you invite michael from vsauce over to eat cornses on the cobses.
...or will he?
(mysterious music starts playing)
I definitely want to see that!
Excellent! This is what we all will have to do when it begins to have problems of lack of food.
Unfortunately, I predict another bad year of "cornses" for you Destin. With only planting a few rows you are going to get terrible pollination. You would be better with more short rows than fewer long rows. Also, at 4 to 5 inch seed spacing, with narrow row spacing, you have a very high population. Seed depth is also a consideration 1.5 to 2.5 inches is typically preferred, but that is also determined by your moisture level at that depth. Deeper if drier but typically not less than 1.5 inches even in wetter soil conditions.
Might be a silly question, but why does pollination matter if the seeds are planted anyway? Is it to do with a mix of (I don't know the terminology) male/female plants pollinating to provide the edible part of the plant?
@@LuckieLordie Pollination determines how well the cob of corn is filled with kernels.
If you have to use a tractor, that's a farm
Mireaze I dunno... have you seen some of the equipment people use to mow their lawns?
@@frozenflames5263If it's not a farm, it's an estate.
@@Mireaze if it's a farm it's a tax write off!! if it's an estate it's no tax write off!! Always make it a farm!
It’s a big boy garden
Destin, Cornses need friendses. Have rows that are 30 inches apart. For your property, at least 5 rows that are at least 15 feet in length. Blocks of corn will encourage growth and pollination. Great job with the soil chemistry.
I really enjoyed this video. I grew up in a 'tobacco farmer family' in KY. Then I moved to Alabama, just outside of Huntsville, like yourself, where (my family at least) only grew corn every 3 years. You're a great teacher, and a great leader.
For some reason, I couldn't stop smiling while watching you explain your gardening. Thank you for this ;)
Ooooo nice... science and art! He is a man of many talents.
Wow, Destin! 2:46 your hat is down to the last 2 notches. No wonder you need to learn every day. Got to fill that thing! Love you man, keep up the great work.
Awesome stuff brother! We are still working on our cornses too lol. Green beans, squash, and cucumbers do very well here in NC. We are adding sweet peas this year, and they are out growing everything so far 😁. Praying God watches over you and yours brother!!
This is exactly what I needed today. Please keep us updated.
Dude when you're driving your tractor to plant stuff, it no longer qualifies as a "garden". That's a mini farm for sure.
or its a super mega overkill for the garden because you had always dreamt of owning a tractor.
Oh my goodness! Destin's mini! Those kids are growing up so fast! Makes me feel old! -- Great video ... hoping for a good harvest!
WHERE'S THE UPDATE DESTIN!? We demand to know how the cornses grew!!!
The Cornses Per Minute on this video is off the charts.
This is too wholesome... I love it!
Only an American would call this a "mini" farm.
Here in Europe, we call that an "industrial" farm, because you're using machines!
;-p
Wow, the kids are growing up!
@Destin you should plant marigolds with your tomatoes! They help them grow really well because tomatoes protects the tomato plants from harmful root-knot nematodes in the soil! would make a neat video
One day I shall too have many cornses in my garden lol
2:40 that mammoth's trunk looks a bit weird
Oh...
Ok, it wasn't just me
Looks kind of like Snuffelupagus to me.
Might wanna consider planting the corn in squares, 20x20 or 40x40(feet) as opposed to one or two long rows for optimal pollination😬
There are so many things I admire about you and your life. This is just one more thing :)
I don't feel at all smarter, but I loved it. In view of that, have a comment for the algorithm.
Corn is a family pollinator. So it will pollinate 10x better in a block verus a single row or two. So if you're doing a single 50' row it will pollinate alot better if you plant 5 ten foot rows. For next year 👍. And corn doesn't transplant very well either. But you're learning 👍👍
1:38 You misspelled "cornses"
*They’re running tractors now*
I think a lot of us just got hit with a wave of wishing he were our dad
I love the tiny signs!
Been waiting for an update on the corners!
This is the year for big gardens and extra produce to bless others...
cool vid dude. love to see the kids getting involved and learning practical skills, what a cool dad..
and off topic how is the phd studies going, any updates.
Can you make a video where you talk about cool farming stuff? I would love to really see and understand how that cultivator thing actually works and what it’s doing
I wish my grandmother was still alive (for a variety of reasons, but in particular) she would instantly be able to tell you how to get those corn to be "6 feet high by the 4th of July"... Sadly I didn't pick up her gift with plants. Here is hoping this is the year!
when a kid is more ripped than me and more ripped than i was at that age despite working in fields for months and building log houses
So lucky to have all this open space available to you during lockdown! Keep up the good work!
There is no plural for corn.
The plural is still “corn” however in specific context you can say “corns”
I had to look it up because “cornses” sounds so strange maybe it’s a southern thing.
Edit: Fair enough then if he was joking sorry
He was just joking. Talking like smeegul.
But the plural of the plant is corn.
Corns is not used to refer to more than one corn / maize plant but to multiple kernels. Corn is also not just used to refer to the maize plant but is also used to refer to grains with kernels such as wheat, barley, etc. Those kernels were refered to as corns.
/r/whoosh
Same thought but probably its a joke.
You give me hope for humanity! And.. if you want to sell some cornses, I'm coming down there to get them! :-)
I mean, seriously, "How does one go wrong with Bodacious Cornses????" Good luck to you and the crop!
Great job being a positive role model (aka. Being a Dad). A parent isn’t doing their job, if they are not preparing their children to become strong and independent individuals who can care for themselves and others.
He's a warrior, and a farmer. Just like the founding fathers.
One of the best things to do with kids, let then see where food comes from.
You do know that when you plant different kinds of plants next to each other there can be cross contamination and your Sweet Corn could become Jalapeno Sweet Corn. Which is something I would eats... :P
Destin's life is so idyllic it's actually ridiculous. Like something out of a children's book.
The mammoth has a different kind of trunk. I didn't know they were made that way. Hmmm.
You typically want to plant several rows of corn near each other. It provides a better chance of of having full ears of corn instead of half empty ears of corn.
God Bless you all and your "Corns eds"
FYI Grasses (Maize, wheat, etc) should be planted in blocks. They're pollinated by wind so a single row might struggle to pollinate prooperly.
---
EDIT: Read some comments, seems this has already been mentioned.
Well great looking plntingeses However cornes cantises pollinate in a row like you have them. a square would be better. Most efficient. And a square for each kind of cornses and distance between each kind of cornses. My spell checker does is not happy with cornses.
Dang, that's legit! My ones also drive tractors now. Crazy! I've been thinking of growing a bunch of cornses as well. I have a sheller and grinder, and might try making corn meal (or chicken feed). It needs to get a bit warmer here though, we got an inch of snow yesterday!
Wow. What an awesome thing to do with your kids. I wish more people did this. That's such an awesome bonding thing for your family.
You should go to Minnesota to visit milennial farmer the youtuber and get smarter every day about corn. I watch that, anyone second that?
That's a nice sized garden! How many acres do you have there at the homestead? I have about 130 sq ft of ground I can use for growing my crops. Good luck with your farming efforts!
Roma + Peppers --- do you make your own salsa?
YEE-HAAAAAR, WE DID 'ER, BOYS!!!
😊❤️🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸
I love you Destin!!!!
2020: Children of the Corn
Well loved, educated, and skilled children of the cornses. Egads! A tortilla of fun is a foot.
Would you say your corn is going to be a-MAIZE-ing this year? Thank you, I'll show myself out.
What’s cornses I’m in Alabama but I’ve never heard that before edit: corn is really hard to grow here so that might be why
Destin has a silly side.
He thinks cornses is funny so he won't stop saying it.
It must be the Alabamian plural for corn, but corn is already a plural of itself, so cornses must be plural squared.
SPQRK If cornses is corn^2, then this must be the year that they grow big and tall!
Ehhh I’ve been looking they areant that tall yet but I think this year is a good year for it
@@PatrickBatemanVietnamBush yes but corns is also plural for corn.
Try some black krim tomatoes next year!
We have grown cornses "successfully" in that we picked corn...problem is it was not nearly as good/sweet as we can get down the road at the farmers stand. No more growing cornses for me...for one it takes up a lot of space compared to the yield and it is not nearly as good as what I can source locally. Problem is probably so much feed/fuel corn gronw nearby that I get cross pollination with undesirable strains. You would be better off planting in a block rather than long rows.
He must be proud
Beautiful family you make parenting look easy . Good on you
I wish you were my dad
OK so what's the scoop on the 2020 cornses yield?
I'm wondering how your tomatoes will do planted so close.
Nice! Glad to see you and your family is doing great... Thanks for sending invites for the service on twitter :)
I am proud of you for being proud of them. Good dadding sir.
I’ve never been good about being aware of the passage of time, but those kids look like they’re growing EXPONENTIALLY! 😮
It's the mammoth and bodacious food
I couldn't quite catch that... is this video about cornses?
How do you manage pests for your crops?
I've frequently wondered how you're cornses were doing. Happy to see the follow-up :)
Man, your kids sure are spouting, themselves! I still have mental pictures of them in a video shooting Nerf guns as just little rugrats and now they're driving tractors and growin' cornses!
I live in Madison so I need to find your garden and help ya eats the foodses. Every time I try to grow tomatos here we get the blight....
What are you doing to keep the critters out?
If I did this, literally every single thing would be eaten by wildlife. In fact, my neighborhood squirrels would probably dig it all up and kill it in the first week.
Great to see your garden patch, My wife Jackie's favorite sweet corn is bodacious, something fun to do is have a sweet corn blind tasting with 3 or 4 varieties it was fun to see the different flavor in sweet corn varieties.
Everyone gangsta til Destin starts growing Tomatoes.
finally some wholesome content on youtube
Comments being moved is annoying
Watch out for crowses... Crowses loves cornses... They loves to eats them...
And Smeagolses loves to eat crowses. Raw crowses.
I’m growing like 50 tomato plants so
Is that a Kiwi Crate tractor kit?
How do you protect your farm from grazing animals? Cuz here in India farmers are very cautious about animals eating some of their crops... also I am no farmer... Maybe this is an obvious answer for you
What happen in 2017? Did the corn grow?
Such a corny video. If you want to create some excitement in the neighborhood, plant about 20 squash plants. Believe me, you will run out of things to do with squash. Your neighbors will go from welcoming free squash, to turning it down. Your compost pile may even start rebelling. My dad made that mistake when I was a kid.
wow dude you can't use the corn for food feed or oil! what is it for then?
Why am I hear. Um. Well he has so many videos i can’t figure out what the last I watch was if I’m super far in. RUclips needs to add a feature to playlist where you can add a check mark to videos. There’d be a second play button called “play from check point” basically you’d check mark a video if you’ve watch it in a playlist then the play from check point would skip the checked videos.
You should take some old corn husks, place them in the field where you wish for a successful harvest and dance thrice widdershins chanting the name of *An Dagda.* Then place a small red stone in each corner of the field on the next full moon.
Trust me on this... I got it from a rather inebriated relative from Limerick.
Knee high by the 4th of July!! Good stuff Bud!!☺
So I know i dont know you but you've shared your family with us and I just wanna say thank you. I feel like you have involved them just enough to allow them to be part without embarrassing them. That being said....THEY ARE STINKING HUGE!!!!! AND AND AND!!!!
DRIVING A TRACTOR!!!!! BOSS!!!
Good luck on the Cornses! I hope its a crop big enough to be a blessing!
Plant Cherokee purple tomatoes. You wont regret it.
I first read this as "Corpses" and wondered if this was some odd collab with Ask a Mortician.
Oh my goodness you'll have corn coming out of your ears! 😄 (Get it?)
