- Hike Through History takes you through historic areas of the city-county of Butte-Silver Bow. In this inaugural episode, the Granite Mountain-Speculator Mine Disaster is discussed as we hike from the Mountain Con mine to the Granite Mountain Memorial.
I lived in that neighborhood as a child, our house on Bennett looked right at the Mt Con hoist house. Went to dances and Bingo games at St. George's hall, and attended the Blaine school. I can scarcely believe all the changes now. In my time there, the only green grass was in a few people's yards, just for instance. Our neighborhood was dominated by old ore dumps right at the end of our street, and there was a small mine and yard at the end of McNeal street, just behind us. It was the Green Mountain mine if I remember correctly. Some friends and I knew how to get in, and spent a lot of time playing around in the yard, and in the hoist house. We climbed to the top of the head frame and danced around up there, on a two foot wide timber. Don't know how I survived my childhood!
Very impressed at your ability to narrate while hiking up the trail :)
Thanks for doing this series. Looking forward to following in your footsteps
I “liked” before it even started. Hope it’s good . . .
