Presentation Title: Evaluating a Minimum Data Set to Characterize the Public Health Nursing Workforce
For this study we conducted a survey of the United States Public Health Services’ (USPHS) nursing workforce to provide a detailed description of their characteristics, the settings in which they work, and the work they perform. We explored their specific roles, functions, and work activities, and also evaluated the feasibility and accuracy of a minimum data set for enumerating the public health nursing workforce more broadly.
Second Presenter: Casey Balio, East Tennessee State University Center for Rural Health and Research
Presentation Title: Distribution of Local Health Department Nurses and Nurse Leaders Relative to Local Demographics: Does distribution match local needs?
Public health nurses (PHN) play a unique and important role in public health, but their numbers have been decreasing over time and vary across jurisdictions. This study will explore variation in the need for and distribution of PHNs across the U.S. to identify and describe ‘PHN deserts,’ as a means to support policy regarding the preparation and allocation of PHN workforce resources.
