One thing is for sure - Excel offers us a vast range of formatting options: colours, font types, column widths and so much more. No wonder people get into a mess when formatting Excel spreadsheets! And don’t worry, I’ve created many spreadsheets that make me cringe when I look back at them …

At the same time, and over the course of hundreds of spreadsheet development projects, I’ve crafted my own approach for formatting Excel spreadsheets. It’s built around an overarching idea: that formatting should serve the user by making data easier to access, read and interpret. Five principles guide how I format Excel spreadsheets: space, cleanliness, readability, coherent colour and distinctiveness.
In this session, I talk you through the five principles, with reference to real-world examples and Excel formatting tips and tricks to help you bring the principles into reality. The aim is to build your confidence formatting Excel spreadsheets and to simplify this often confusing topic. Though there are many spreadsheets out there that can feel like a ‘mess’, a well-formatted Excel spreadsheet can be a real wow factor - and can differentiate your work as an Excel analyst.

That feeling when you format everything to perfection, and then your supervisor just prints it in monochrome. Vertically aligned, on three pieces of paper. Great advices as always. Thanks.

Great video. Have been watching on catch up due to hospital procedure. All I’ll say is a cancer scare but not confirmed…nothing serious but still scary.
Formatting for me has always been a problem. I can spend hours trying different colour styles and formats. Padding is always a must for me.
A lot of MS Excel online tutorials seem to be based more on how to do formulae but not many show how to do formatting like this tutorial today
One issue I don’t like in spreadsheets is if you have numbers in say column B and then text in column C. As numbers are default to the right and text in the left. If I have a mixture of texts and numbers, I just left align all and do an indent.
Spreadsheets can be off putting if alignment is all over the place….As We know consistency is the key.
Keep up the good work and as said before love all your vids from day 1.

Sorry to hear about the diagnosis Dave - I hope things are not too bad.
I think many would agree formatting is problematic. Fair points about cell alignment.
Hope to see you before the end of the programme!
