  • This is a simple totuorial showing you how to add Bluetooth and GPS to your TX16S:
    Software:
    Ai-Thinker serial port debugging assistant (docs.ai-thinke...)
    or
    HTerm (www.der-hammer...)
    and optionally:
    UBLOX u-center v22.07(www.u-blox.com...)
    STL Files and other downloads:
    drive.google.com/drive/folders/1SwYJUNcq_uOHvnscYHomzXt47cd0DGmA
    Bluetooth setup:
    Hardware:
    MK1: FrSky Bluetooth Module (www.aliexpress...)
    MK2: AT-09 / HC-10 Bluetooth BLE Module (www.aliexpress...)
    4-pin Molex PicoBlade 1.25 (www.ebay.co.uk...)
    Configuration:
    1. Using a USB-TTL module, connect your Bluetooth module to your PC and open up an AT terminal. You can use any you like but I like to use the one from Ai-Thinker.
    2. Select the COM port that you have connected your BLE module. Enure that you have connected TX and RX correctly.
    3. On many boards, the BAUD RATE is set by default to 115000, but yours may not be. If you send somehting like AT+NAME and you get a response with random jibberish, change the baud rate and try again until you find the right one. Once you do, you can change the name. Follow the AT-09 data sheet for how to change the name of the BLE module. Change it to something random for now because the TX16S will rename it automatically, if you have enabled bluetooth in your custom firmware. If not, and rember you don't actually need to have bluetooth enabled in your build settings, you can name it to the default "TX16S by sending the command AT+NAMETX16S
    4. You also need to make sure that your BLE baud rate is set to 115000. To do that, use *AT+BAUD8*. Once you make this change, you'll also need to chnage the baud rate of Ai-Thinker.
    5. Your BLE module is now ready and all you need to is crimp female Dupont connectors to the 4-pin Molex PicoBlade cable.
    6. Whilst you are doing this, it is worth lifting up that locking tab on the PicoBlade connector and swapping the wires around such that they fit the description on the motherboard, i.e. 5V is red, G is black, Tx is green and Rx is yellow.
    7. Go into the radio settings and select *Telemetry Mirror" from the dropdown menu of AUX2.
    GPS Setup:
    Hardware:
    Beitian BN-220 (www.aliexpress...)
    Any other thin GPS module may work, but the baud rate for the GPS needs to be 9600 and the data output format needs to be NMEA.
    1. If you want to test the BN-220 GPS module, you can use software like UBLOX u-center to ensure that the baud rate of your GPS module is 9600 and that the output is NMEA.
    2. Same as with the Bluetooth BLE module, connect the USB-TTL adapter with the GPS unit, open the software, connect to the correct COM port ensuring that you have selected 9600 as your baud rate and wait for GPS satelites. u-center allows you to check the data, but you can also you can also just monitor the output of the GPS using Ai-Thinker or HTerm. If you see items like $GNRMC
    and $GNGGA in your output, you should be good to go. The zeros and blank spaces only mean that you have no GPS fix at the moment.
    3. As this GPS can work within a voltage range of 3.3V to 5V, you can connect it directly to AUX1, which is adjacent to the main processor on the radio. A diagram showing all ports can be found in on the Google drive link from above.
    4. Use the STL file to print a thin version of the speaker mount and change the original part of this part. There are two versions of the file. I printed v1 of the file and I wasn't too happy with how it fits, but v2 should be perfect.
    5. Mount the GPS underneath the Tx16S logo using some rolled up Gorilla tape as shown in the video.
    6. Use the included connector cable with Dupont connectros on the other side and plug them into a 4-pin connector.
    7. Take some 90-degree male connectos and remove the plastic holder and trim the short side by about 2mm to avoid a short with the screen below. The motherboad uses 2mm spacing on the holes so with some gentle persuasion, all the pins will go in and make contact witht the port.
    8. Add some Gorilla tape to the gps connector and adhere the connector to the motherboard. I did not solder my connectors be it was not benefitial. This is only temporary while I get the right connector.
    9. Go into the setting menu and select GPS from the dropdown menu of AUX1.

      No. TX to TX and RX to RX as they've labled them incorrectly on the MK2 boards. But if you buy a new one, you might have the right lable. Just compare it with what I have in the video. Mine is incorrectly labled.

    Nice video,
    I wonder if the exact same functions are possible with the AT-09 / HC-10 Bluetooth BLE Module as the FrSky Bluetooth Module. In your description you use an old version of Frysky Bluetooth Module. The Para bluetooth module is the new version. This has a built-in antenna and is much more reliable than the old version. I built this into the first version TX16S and it works great but is difficult to install in the first generation TX16S. I myself use the Telemetry Viewer app on my phone and tablet. Functions perfectly.

    • @DZARO

      The correct way is to connect RX to TX and vice versa. However, as the silk screen lables on the TX16S v2 motherboard are incrorect, you need to connect RX from your BT module to RX on the board and the same for the TX data line. This is also mentioned in the video description.

    Hey, thanks for the video! I'm also making a mod for my tx16s. I have a couple of questions, maybe you may help:
    1. You connect your bluetooth module into an internal port(white color). Do you know what is its type? I was trying to find, but cannot identify for sure. Size-wise it looks similar to JST zh 1.5, but it doesn't fit.
    2. Can you please explain how physical UART ports map to AUX1, AUX2? I was using the dupont ports on the bottom of tx16(UART6 and UART3) and they map to AUX1 and AUX2. You use the internal ports and they also map to AUX1 and AUX2. Are they simply duplicates or you have a custom build/settings to enable them?

    Thank you for the video. Quick question, why have you listet different Bluetooth modules for mk1 / 2? In both cases you need v-Gnd-tx and rx, so it’s should be interchangeable, right?

    • @DZARO
      @DZARO  9 месяцев назад +1

      The one for the MK1 is specific for that motherboard and is much better ingrated with more functionality, such as bluetooth trainer, which is intended to work with another MK1 radio. Apart from that, it gets soldered directly to the motherboard and is controlled directly via the operating system of the radio (EdgeTX or OpenTX).
      The one for the MK2 can work with the MK1, but only with limited functionality, i.e. only bluetooth telemetry. It does not get soldered to the motherboard of the MK1 and there are no headers inside the radio so you have to solder the wires directly to the bent part of the AUX pins, if you want to have a clean setup with all the electronics inside.
      Hope that helps and makes sense! :)

      While I don't believe it's possible just yet, he was talking at the end of the video about bidirectional telemetry, and for the ability for the drone to know the location of the operator, rather than it just having a fixed GPS position for RTH. The operators position can potentially by dynamic if they're for instance flying from the back of a truck etc, so I can see the advantage of this. The other option is for the ability to do a follow me kind of feature or an orbit around the radios position etc.

      I wanted to have all of the options available and for this exact reason I decided to get the MK2 radio with the 4-in-1 module, as well as an ELRS JR module for those long range flights. The multimodule is amazing and supports a HUGE list of protocols. You can also use it to act as a receiver and connect another TX16S with a 4-in-1 module to have wireless trainer. The ELRS version of the radio is not bad, but the antenna is fixed, so you can't change to a separate directional antenna for long range flights and it is limited to only 250mW, which is about 1/4 of what all other ELRS JR bay modules offer. I pre-ordered my ELRS JR module from Radiomaster and I will do a full review and teardown when it arrives. My reccomendation is to get the MK2 radio with the 4-in-1 module as the pots are SIGNIFICNATLY BETTER than on the old MK1 and the feel and finish of the radio is just better. I decided to go for the carbon fiber look, but of course this is just personal preference. I have the silver MK1 and I didn't like it because the silver/chrome-looking parts are just painted plastic, so it will scratch eventually. @@DZARO OH man! Thank You for the replaying and giving me info. I had both training plane at my teens and i crashed it badly but recently i wanted to get back and try out it again and I crashed it again just right at the start of a flight as those other times.
      I connected radio to a PC to try out some sims and noticed it has interference. When I moved right stick to the edge of the throw suddenly it jumps in signal on two other channels which would make plane bank hard to the left and up and straight to the ground. And that's how i realized that if not crappy off brand chinese transmitter i would have enjoyed the hobby for over 15 years. But oh well never too late. I will take your advice and buy 4-in-1 then. I did not think of long range antenna aspect and that's a great catch!
      So I would like you to ask two more things. Can I buy R88 receiver from RadioMaster and replace in my plane to fly or will the TX16 will find my 15~ years old receiver and bind. Also do you know any discord servers or forums for EU RC hobbyist. I have a lot of questions :D.
      P.S. I watched that video of button upgrading right after i posted a comment. That's a great improvement. Also subscribed but I don't really like jazz that much :D

      @@FlankCobra HAHAHAHA, *House Music* mostly but more RC content will follow as soon as I have my recording setup ready.
      Regarding the first question: You should be absolutely fine with the Radiomaster R88 because to your advantage, nothing has greatly changed in terms of servo technology. Maybe a change from analog to digital servos is the only main thing. I'm in this hobby for the last 17 years and we had metal gear servos 15 years ago, they were just a lot more expensive. Other than that, you can expect great performance from any 2.4GHz technology due to the incredible resiliance to interference, except for Spectrum's DSM technology. I would avoid them at all cost. Out of curiosity, what receiver is installed in that 15 year old plane?
      Regarding your second question: I'm not aware of any marjo RC groups. there are some relatively active FPV forums, such as the INAV Fixed Wing Group on Facebook. Maybe I'll create discord channel myself and post it in a follow up comment. Then you can ask me anything you want there.
      PS: From my experience, DSM is the only technology that is inferior to all 2.4GHz transmitter / receiver systems and is frankly speaking just crap. My friend from the flying field has a brand new $500 Spektrum radio and his reception is just horrible, even if we turn off all of our transmitters to avoid any potential interference.
      PPS: If money is no object, I would reccomend getting the version with the AG01 gimbals. They feel a lot better but the new gimbals on the MK2 are not bad as well. Have a look at this link: www.radiomasterrc.com/products/tx16s-mark-ii-max-radio-controller?variant=42850745319655

      @@DZARO Well I found few videos. I have this plane ruclips.net/video/iNygjoj5AYc/видео.html with stock engine, battery and transmitter. ruclips.net/video/_xlZLfTaA7Y/видео.html But receiver in this video is different. On my receiver there is absolutely no markings of any kind. But I will replace it so no problem there.
      Also i was looking to buy a new radio for over 3 years now. Wanted FrSky Taranis but just before buying all over RUclips started poping videos about RadioMaster TX16 M2 wanted pre-order but had knowledge gap and could not find help I was looking for few vague answers here and there. Then the pandemic hit and took away life's joy for over a year and half. So here I am again trying to push my way into this :D And RadioMaster sending me e-mails 2 times a day that I should buy already what's in my cart xD But I am playing in Photoshop with color variants on radio and I almost decided on what colors I want xD So I will take your advice on 4-in-1 with AG01. Should i buy external ELRS. If so what do you think I should get Ranger or Ranger Micro? Or don't buy it for the time being?

    • @DZARO
      @DZARO  Год назад +1

      @@FlankCobra If you are buying the R88 receiver and you only have this plane at the moment, you don't need the ELRS gear for now. I have no idea how good they are and there only paid reviews out on RUclips, so they only say nice things about it. Once I have it in my hand and am able to take it apart, I will be able to offer my opinion. The difference between the Ranger and Ranger Micro is that the Ranger has up to 2W of power output, but to enable this, you'll need to go into the web-based settings of the module and chnage some parameters manually. Here's the thing: I fly long range most of the time and with good antennas and antenna placement, I was able to fly over 10km on just 25mW of power. I think that speaks for itself. Personally, I'm getting the Ranger Micro (the one that fits flush with the JR module bay) because it doesn require any external power, has up to 1W of output power, same as my current Happymodel ES24TX Pro, and just fits nicely on the radio. There a lunatics who want to fly with 2W of power, but there's a thing they forget: Increasoing power output offers diminishing returns, i.e. you don't get double the range for double the power. The best thing for range is a directional antenna. If you are palnning to build a long-range plane, then why not preorder it. If not, you could wait for a few more reviews to show and then make up your mind if you still think that you need it.
      FYI: Happymodel ES24TX Pro is a good ELRS module electronically speaking, but has a crappy cooling fan that sounds horrible because the bearings are very bad. I replaced it twice already and it's still horrible.
      PS: If you do get an ELRS system, I would reccomend the Matek 2.4GHz R24-D ELRS Diversity Receiver. It's the best I have tested so far.

    What is the benefit of having gps on a transmitter?

    • @DZARO
      @DZARO  Год назад

      At the moment, there is no benefit, but the idea is to have a GPS in the transmitter so as to enable the potential for future developemtns like RTO (return to operator) and follow me. You will also be technically compliant with the RemoteID requirtements in the USA. The only thing where you have some benefit is using the modified Yaapu Telemetry Widget: github.com/rotorman/FrskyTelemetryScript

    Whats the purpose to having a GPS in your radio? I sure hope its not for remote ID, ppl caving to this rediculous remote ID are really just making things worse IMO

    • @DZARO
      @DZARO  10 месяцев назад

      Let me explain:
      Initially, the idea was to have send a live home location from the radio to the plane via MSP commands. This way, you would be able to have a moving home location independent of the take-off location. Everything was explained in the development request on the INAV github page. The second thing was RemoteID compliance. We're not talkitg about usage here, just compliance. If someone uses the feature, it is their problem, I'm not here to encourage or discourage anyone to use it, just make it available for a much more affordable price with the equipment people already have (i.e. ELRS WiFi)
      Personally, I disagree with RemoteID because of safety concerns I have for the pilot. It makes us easy targets for theives as they now know exactly where to find expensive equipment. Even when you are flying with a spotter, it can result and has already resulted in people getting their shit stolen as they were flying.
