Hey redbull - This is West African Djembe Kan. Kan means solo in Mandinka but the idea is for the soloist to demonstrate his skill in free expression. There are many rhythms there, many more that you won't understand without the underlying pulse, and a fair bit of free playing. It's classic djembekan and this guy is good. Search for djembekan and see other examples by Mamady Keita and Seckou Keita amongst others.
I love drum circles, I do not care if there are some bad players, as long as there are enough good players. it's about playing together and being one. This concept of musician being on stage and people watching is a very new compared to history.... at a drum circle even the people just watching and listening are part of the circle... MORE COWBELL!!!!
i insist on my comment. of cause he has increadible skill. i however was talking about the high quality instrument he is playing on. i played djembe my self for years, i know what a great djembe sounds like. if he had a cheap djembe he could not produce this fine variety of tones he demonstrates in the video. skill is not everything. if you have a bad instrument, no matter your skill it doesn't sound as great as this video.
Drum circles are a great way for people of all abilities to access rhythm. This guy plays with complete virtuosity. He is a djembe fola. These things have nothing in common.
it is the djembe. his djembe can produce a lot of very different tones depending on where and how you hit it. skill is also an at least equally important factor but i played djembe for 4 years on different quality djembes, i know what i am talking about. i know the difference of a good djembe and a cheap one. even with the superbe skill of this drummer, if you have a cheap djembe you will never be able to play 0:31 - 1:40 thats the sound of a skilled man with a high quality instrument.
These posts just go to show tat the world is in not short of idiots... The guy is good. Damn good. Anyone want to challenge his skills, then post YOUR vids. Yeah. That's what I thought.
i got a djembe but it is not nearly sounding as great as the one in the video. if i could get my hands on one of this quality i would shurely start playing it again. it has so much different fine notes thrue out the center and the outer edge :O
@glorplaxy Drum circles are for learning, this man is good, but i am player just 10 years and i think that he is doing just 2 drumdolls. (with respect for kassoumsongo, i dont want be unpolited just i tell you my perspective) :)
I guess I'm the only one that didn't really think much of this solo? It lacked character and substance. Sounded more like the annoying neighbor banging on the pipes of a steam radiator heater in an apartment complex back in the 70s?
Wo kann ich mit Dir spielen???? Möchte bei Dir Vorspielen. Du machst Dir ein Bild von mir und wir schauen ob die Chemie stimmt. Dann sehen wir weiter. Sagenhaft gespielt Affeengeil. @arasthdm very very cool, but you can't really compare a doumbek solo with a djembe solo.
3:44 INSANE BASS HITS so inspirational!!! :D
