Making Passenger Cars for the Train I've Always Wanted

- I've been on the market for some passenger cars to help finish off my dream train. By chance I discovered someone in the area was selling genuine Swedish passenger cars so I ordered them up. I disassembled and painted the cars to get the look I wanted and am pretty happy with how they turned out.
The reason the ROCO cars are longer than the Marklin cars is that Marklin's cars are, for length, scaled at 1:93 while ROCO has for years scaled their passenger cars at a true 1:87
Nice job on the paint... Can't really tell them apart too much from a distance... As a model car builder myself, I was impressed with your painting skill... They looked nice...
When you unboxed that first brown car, and it leaned, my heart stopped for a second...
Hey Harrison I live in Knoxville TN USA and could watch your videos all day long. My birthday was on Friday and I got a cool Conrail. Your videos are so entertaining and I would just like to thank you for being the best RUclips in the model train community. I also really like the American and Canadian flag together!
-Hutton
Well done. You should do more like this. Additional details and what not.
Harrison, that is one fantastic looking train, sir!!! Great work!!!
A very impressive disassembly, paint and reassemble project Harrison. The cars look great.......
They do😊👍
Thank you very much!
Great video. Ottawa? My old hometown. I used to be a Lionel Line kid a million years ago. Wonderful to see your trains. Thank you.
Nice to see a dream come together. Nice paint job.
They turned out real nice, good job.
Well done on the respray....they look great. 👍
Excellent job, Harrison. Now for the hard part, lettering the city/station name on each passenger carriage. Looks like they may be a little longer as they have an extra window in each car -- hmm, but they will do as they are truer to the Hull-Chelsea-Wakefield Railway carriages.
Thanks for sharing. 👍👍👍
I appreciate you displaying the American flag correctly. When you display it like that the stars should always be on the left when you are looking at it. Thank you..
Some people say I have it backwards. I just want to display patriotism.
I think you are saying the flag is displayed correctly. The stars are on the left from what I see. But yes, I did wonder about both flag configurations, but clearly there are constraints there and good to see them both.
US flag is correct as per Google search.
I enjoyed this video. I liked the cars in their original colors but I see why you painted them. Good job blending it all together.
Nice looking Train That little steam engine doing a great job Pulling those cars👍
Im so happy that you got some Swedish passenger cars. In thr thumbnail i saw a blue SJ livery. I just saw you unbox the CLASSIC brown painted cars and oh my is it giving me nostalgia, i have one of them myself and ive ridden in them when i was around 6 at a heritage railway. And seing those run behind the E2 looks so good.
Excellent work, SMT! You're so lucky to put the Wakefield excursion train together.
And here I thought I was the only person who did custom paint on passenger cars with spray paint. Those cars look good, nice work.
Great paintwork and a fine set, well done!
Great paint job. Would love to see them closer up as they are running. Looking forward to seeing the diesel engine helping the steam locomotive with the passenger fleet, enjoy. 🙂
Great job. They look amazing
You did an awesome job on those it all looks great together 👍👍
Nice work mate the repaint went very well spray paint cans are great for repainting they do a good job the train looks fantastic now.
Nice to see your dream train finally taking shape
Wow great job they look great!
I noticed one car at 5:30 had lights in it, but I didn't see them on after repainting them. Did you take the lights out of that car?
The diesel locomotive the HCW used was a class T43 if you're interested
for the Märklin cars, you can buy DC wheels, just search for the number of the model with "2 rail wheelset" after that and you can find them. You can allso search under Märklin's Hamo and Trix brands.
I might do that so I can use them.
Danm great job happy rail s
Nice Job On the Passenger Cars.
great paint job on your coachs
Great find of passenger cars, the new paint jobs look really sleek, have you ever gone looking at garage sales for model train items?
they look really good
Wow! Awesome. Roco cars ehh well a brand i know that is part of the Fleischmann brand. Great paint job . i looked before before for you but was like findimg a needle in haystack and expense. . I love this though 🇸🇪= Swedish flag
Great job! Those came out very nice! 👍🏼
The hobby store I worked for in the late 90s had a tremendous assortment of Roco, Liliput, and Lima passenger equipment. IIRC, the Swedish coaches were 72' long on average. They had one full-length dome car that retailed for around $200 US dollars which was insane money for an HO coach in 1999!
I think was looking at those one, too.
You did a great job painting them!
Those are some nice cars. Great video SMT!
The Wakefield train was a beautiful and unique operation. It's a pity that it wasn't restored after the storm damage and that someone(s) decided that the scrapers' torch was better than finding a new home. 😥
Pretty cool train bro.
Beautiful Job SMT!
Nice work for using rattlecan paint! Impressive!!
I cant wait to see The full Train running live ! Nice Work!
Oh, before I forget, liked the new paint jobs. Nothing wrong with the ol’ rattle can!
Glad to hear it
Very nice.
Good project. They came out nice
Damn I jumped a little when that first car shifted a bit and looked like it was about to take a run on the Gravity Express.
lol
Gravity Express. LOL
Me 2!
Galaxy Express?
@@thestarlightalchemist7333 The Gravity Express always operates during the Fall...
Those turned out nice...awesome job
9:40 why those paint scheme remind of the old indonesia paint sheme from the 80's
ironically i got mine the other way around, i got my consist for my dream engine before i actually got the engine (picking the engine up in about 5 days) great video as always harrison
Would have recommended a model spray paint like Tamiya and maybe not try and paint straight over the model as well as it will kill some fine detail
SJ Short for "Statens järnvägar", The states railways .
Literally "State iron-way/road/route."
Very good video .well done.keep it up.
lmfaooo this girl is huge, great video smt!
good effort with the coaches. I can't help but think it'd still look an excellent train even with just 4 coaches. their pretty big those scale length puppies, almost think maybe the traditional marklin or Fleischmann shorties weren't such a bad idea :)
Cool video! The engins used for those carts were mainly electric and made by ASEA, first the RAPID the the still used Rc line of engins. Though I think the V12 diesels T-41 and T-43 were used on non electrifyed routs.
Question: why didn’t you hook the lights back up?? Didn’t want them??
fantastic job buddy well done
Thanks
Hello!
I really enjoy the content you have been putting out. I recently decided to start getting back into the model railroading hobby after being out of it for probably 20 or more years. Back then I had a N scale set with my dad and some things like DCC were never even heard of it seems. Your videos further drive my inspiration to get back into the hobby with my dad. We have decided to go with HO this time as it seems to have more options and details then N scale would.
Anyway sorry for the rant. Keep up the good work and keep having fun!
May the rails continue to be smooth and strong in the journeys ahead :)
-Sabes
Nice!
After seeing the engine video and now this one I couldn’t help but to do a little research myself. So to see the real deal check out the “Hull - Chelsea - Wakefield Tourist Train” RUclips video. Cool to see it and yours.
Four words: SO COOL!
🤔
You can put the a shortcouplungs. For realistic distance between the buffers. It is easy because the wagons has a NEM schats..ROCO kurzkuplung.
Great Video keep it up
I really enjoy watching all of your videos. How is the Hershey factory common
Love to see some swedish stuff on your layout, im from Sweden👍👍👍
Thanks. I'm a big fan of Swedish equipment
@@SMTMainline Smt do you still have that old märklin track? I saw in one of your older train show video that you had AC locos and i wonder what type the track is, AC or DC?
ROCO, sem dúvida, uma das melhores marcas de trem elétrico do mundo e, com certeza, nos últimos anos, a que mais investe em tecnologia de ponta.
Cool buddy
Could yank the weights from the cars to help out the loco in the meantime.
Diesel in the mail......... I was going to suggest you should use the piko
Now all you need is some a/c units for the roofs I think?
For extra realism, flip a coin before each operating session to see if the track was washed out. ;)
Sad to see it go.
Just Awesome
Put a full bridge rectifier in them
If you want high end swedish passenger cars buy some from Hnoll, very good quality and has real suspension on the bogies, thats a first for me
Hi smt I know you're talked about the wakefield train quite a bit so I looked it up and the passenger cars were scraped but do you know what happened to the locamotive?
As a European train fan, this was painful to watch. All jokes aside tho, the cars look very impressive. Also, while you say those cars look more modern than the old ones(which if I remember correctly were piko made in east germany), they are still from early 90s at the latest judging from the boxes, and the detail difference is probably more from roco being able to put more detail into cars, than piko could, just because of their economic situations
Looking forward to the diesel assist. 👍🚂🚃🚃🚃🚃🚃🚃🚃🚃🚃
I hope that arrives soon, I ordered it almost a month ago. To be fair, it is coming from Sweden.
It could be that the new cars might be OO scale. Which are actually larger in scale then the North American HO scale.
the coaches are European, so definitely HO - modern OO is uniquely English (apart from the barely used 4mm 19mm gauge in the US)
The Swedish loading gauge is higher and wider than the European UIC loading gauge. This is why they're wider and taller than the german cars
First time commenting those cars are Beauties
Thank you!
@@SMTMainline hay bro np as a kid I used to to break all of my trains as remember and I have a bockman set now if u play the game called rocket league on PS4 maybe we can play some time?
So cool
I saw those and almost bought them. Now I'm glad I didn't!!
I miss the days when I could get here early. Guess those days are gone, eh?
Those are some really nice cars! Are you yourself Swedish at all?
More model train videos! 😀
Like impressive for spray paint, almost looks like a airbrush!
And you used 'spray' paint. Great. What kind of masking tape did you use? What train is this where did it run?
Yo smt I might send my motorized box car to you as it needs fixing, how do I go about that?
Show us the Hershey factory next time great video
April 2021, hopefully...
The have very good lighting system installed, why don't you use that?
Im from sweden so really nice
I just got an Amtrak p40 just like yours
My train set is marklin, Roco and leema .
i am going to buy the lionel prr s1 duplex!
Nice
The earlier rico cars are shortened to accommodate tighter curves found on european layouts. Length scales out to 1/100. Newer cars cars are 1/87 scale and are scale length
Meant roco
@@peterkneissl3358 length is a fairly arbitrary measurement/scale, but the coaches are still 1/87
so now i know that you still get that shiny effect when you spraypaint it. and with some scotch tape. it would be WAY easier! and by the way. i live in durango colorado and there is a narrow guage railroad there. bachmann has a starter set of it but the engine doesnt look so good. they got really nice coaches and i was wondering if you could maybe get some of those?
the railroad is called "durango and silverton"
The shiny effect is based on how much gloss the paint has. Most of the paints I use now are low gloss by high gloss is pretty common in stores.
Do u have a roundhouse, turntable or engine shed?
5:00 szegény gőzös mezakkan ennyi pótkocsitól, teeee :-)))
poor steam mezakkan from so many trailers, teeee :-)))
Hi I think your new carriages are OO scale and your older ones HO, which would explain the difference in size. They look good though,
Not British 00 here for these Roco continental European carriages. These newer cars are true 1:87 HO scale, but the smaller older cars made by Lima or other brands in the 70's and 80's are 1:100 scale to save money and fit in tighter curves. 😄
@@frankishknight1878 the older coaches tended to be 1/87 but reduced in length only, some rivarossi was 1/92 but generally all euro manufacturers gave up quite early on height width compromises as it was too noticeable, whereas length was never such an issue. 1/100 is TT3 scale: considerably smaller than HO / OO. it's just that modern coaches are very long no matter which continent, and a train in HO now takes up more room than the old Lionel O gauge trains!
cool
Would you like to change the couplers for kade couplers?
