  • Boreraig and Suisnish were coastal villages that were cleared of their inhabitants in the mid-nineteenth century by a wealthy landowner who wanted to farm sheep. This practice was, tragically, very common all over the Scottish highlands at that time. Clearing a village usually meant forcibly evicting the villagers from their homes and, in the case of Boreraig and Suisnish, the methods used were recorded as particularly brutal. Families, including the very young and very old, were all forced into destitution and the roofs of the houses were set alight to prevent anyone tempted to come back to the area.
