  • The “1st International Conference on Lute Study in Higher Education”, a collaboration between the German Lute Society (Deutsche Lautengesellschaft e.V., DLG) and the University of the Arts Bremen (Hochschule für Künste Bremen) took place from September 27th-29th, 2019 in Bremen.
The subjects of the presenters' papers ranged from historical pedagogy, iconography, improvisation, basso continuo, historical lute technique, playing lute in the 20th century, historical lute types, articulation, repertoire, and teaching lute to children.
Improvisation was an important, if not a crucial element in the musical practice of the renaissance, and lute players were no exception. Francesco da Milano, Alberto da Mantova, and Luys de Narváez, to name just a few, were celebrated for their skills in improvising on the lute and vihuela, and the publication of the treatise Arte de tañer fantasía (1565) by Tomás de Santa María only confirms the importance of improvising counterpoint on plucked string instruments of that period. This video provides the practical examples for Bor Zuljan's book chapter about his practice-based research project with three main research focuses: counterpoint and rhetoric, sounds and organology, and improvisation and the power of music.
The publication offers videos (Bor Zuljan, Xavier Diaz-Latorre) complementary to their papers/book chapters.
The book, a co-production of the Deutsche Lautengesellschaft and the Lute Society of America, is available as an e-book by Amazon under the title "Teaching & Studying the Lute - International Conference Bremen 2019" (Eds. John Griffiths & Sigrid Wirth). Hardcopies are available from Amazon on a print on demand basis. Orders can be placed on Amazon print-on-demand.

I'm studying Partimento, and I'm wondering how the lute was taught in Naples.....wonderful video. Maybe someday you will show us cadences and sequences and compare tactics with the keyboards :)
