  • Power wheelchairs are big. And heavy. And can be menacing-looking.
But fear not if you see one heading your way!
Power wheelchair users have gone through extensive training and are used to maneuvering them through weird angles and tight spaces.
In this video, we see a power wheelchair interaction start off great, but take a bad turn.
MossRehab's "It's Just Respect" in-person training & video series aims to educate people about the dos and don'ts of disability etiquette-whether it be in the workplace, a retail business or out in the community.
It's about providing a more comfortable experience for people with disabilities. But it is also makes good business sense for anyone who deals with customers with disabilities.

Love it! Especially the end! But on a serious note, I use a power wheelchair (a Jazzy) and in the beginning I was not very skilled and there are still times when the nerves in my hand will cause my hand to "jump" and hit the joy stick too much sending me out of control for a split second like a foot forward. It's fast and rare but does happen. So it really depends on the person and maybe their experience with the chair. My pet peeve is the way the girl held the door open. She should have stood to the side of the door not as if she was holding in it open with her back and body. For some reason about half the people who are nice enough to hold the door for me will do this. It's like they want me to run over their feet or something. Or the ones who are already inside and lean out with their arm to hold the door open so when I go through I practically bump my face into their chest and one of my hands ends up in their crotch area LOL!

That’s a good one. I’m not a power chair user myself, I use forearm crutches mostly and a manual wheelchair sometimes, and I am probably old enough to be your grandfather LOL! But when I was in high school back in the 1970s, people used to get upset with me with my forearm crutches that I might accidentally land the tip on their foot!
Hey, if people started to bother you, going buzzing down the hallways in fast mode didn’t seem like a bad idea LOL! (just kidding)
Seriously, if the door situation with the other girl was like what was shown in the video (double doors) somehow both of those doors should have been open then she wouldn’t have had to worry about her feet.
In whatever the situation is, I sometimes find it better to just tell somebody don’t bother I can do it myself. I know I am more ambulatory than you, but I’m sure there are things you Are able to do where involving someone else makes it more difficult.

That's positively obsurd! Using that ridiculous logic I'd trust any idiot who was shooting a gun because they own it! Think about it! By the way, I'm disabled so don't hate me, I'm just skeptical, just because you're using something doesn't necessarily mean you know how to use it well and are responsible about using it correctly! Does it??? Or do all you folks believe that a driver is capable just because they're behind the wheel of a car!!! Rethink your inspirational and politically correct message, I think you'll see my point! 😊

David Carter Thanks had someone in a powerchair hit me a few weeks ago. It hurt. It is a machine and a vehicle, and it's not the disabled person that people worry about. It's respecting the machine and hoping they can drive it.

micks336, or maybe you should have gotten the fuck out of the way instead of offering to help and then standing in the damn way like a fucking idiot!!! Start using the comen sence!!!

Just like a driver has to be trained to drive a car, a person has to be trained, before using a wheelchair. Yes, we do know how to operate our wheelchairs. However, just like a person can cause an accident, while driving. A person can accidently hit someone, while driving their wheelchair.

I can see both points of view, because so many people out there either don't know how to use there power chairs or they just don't care about others in general, however she should not have offered to hold the door in the first place if she was going to be standing in the f-ing way of someone in a chair from going threw the doorway to begin with...

I think you need to get over yourself. Those chairs are big and heavy and could hurt someone. YOU need to have more consideration for others that want to assist you and the fact that they don't want to get hurt in the process

Yorkazuna actually this is a good example of why we need schools (and all other structures) to be more accessible, with devices that empower us disabled folks to be more independent. What you’re suggesting is segregation - separate and unequal.
