    It's almost as if the HST gave a blast of the horn back as an "up yours!"

      lol yeah, i do prefer HST's but for now having the mix is nice. I don't think they should scrap the HST's though, running them on smaller services like Cardiff - Worcester or something might be an idea for a new route, because most of the time you have to change as msot trains I've seen by GWR all go to London Paddington. While as the AT300s can run Paddington bound services but some HSTs in the mix would sitll be nice to keep up the variety otherwise HSTs will the ones that will become uncommon (I've never seen an AT300 irl but i don't live in GWR territory, my nearest station that GWR serve is Worcester Forgate Street). I'm served mainly by West Midlands Railway (used to be London Midland) and Arriva Trains Wales and Virgin Trains and Cross Country. However the SLUG (Stroubridge Line User Group) are proposing the gWR to extend services up to Stourbridge Junction so hopefully we can get some Hereford or Worcester bound services but then there's a capacity problem as SBJ has 3 platforms, 1 dedicated to the Stourbridge Town Branch line which sees a train every 10 mins so you can't really use that as it would disrupt the services to the town, also the connection to the mainline points towards Birmingham so some conversion work would be needed. The other 2 are mainline ones and see quite frequent services to Birmingham, Dorridge, Stratford Upon Avon, Leamington Spa, Worcester and Kidderminster roughly 2 an hour so also a bit tight. Some major work would need to be undertook at Stourbridge if they want to extend GWR to there. I would certainly support the idea, as that line doesn't have much variety in traffic (it sees mostly the Class 139 Parry people mover, which is unique to stourbridge and class 172/2 and /3's which are the main commuting trains to destinations on their map. GWR sprinters and HSTS and IEPS would add to the variety but platform extensions would be needed too. OOh and I forgot to mension that Chiltern Railways run morning and evening services to London Marylebone, other times you have to change at Birmingham itself. Sorry I'm waffling on alot

    Why is the 800 running on diesel? The electric lines are in place and should be in use.

    Ben, you need to drop the level of the music in the intro. Damn near blew mah head right-off! As soon as I heard that racket, I hit the stop button. Seriously though, my hobby is a gentle pursuit, where the only music is the locos and their trains. :-)

      OK, no probs mate, only observation. It may be worth getting a pal to have a listen to the levels before you post. Excellent videos though! Take a trip to reading west one day for variety and freight, before the wires go up.

  • @soundseeker63

    I quite like the look of these new units. Shame the OLE on this route is such a damn eyesore. Very crude looking imo.
    Is there any set pattern as to where/when they use diesel/AC power? Seems to be totally random in this video.

    • @CyclicPilot
      @CyclicPilot 6 лет назад +2

      Electric eastbound, diesel westbound :p I believe westbound trains currently change to diesel just before arriving/passing through Didcot, while eastbound they change to AC while standing at the station. This is while they sort out the automated system which should eventually change between diesel/AC without the driver's input.

  • @andrewmonument8847

    What gets me is... WHY link two 5-car units to create a longer train... when a diesel coupling can handle ten carriages without additional powercars !

  • @tobys_transport_videos

    So how common (or uncommon) are HST's on services between London and Bristol? I can't say I'm a fan of the Class 800, and would rather ride an HST on the Great Western lines unless there is something with a bit more character in use? (Why I'm asking is because I will be in London and later Scotland in August, chasing trains.)

    • @hstben1
      @hstben1  6 лет назад +2

      DC4916 Productions Depends on the day really. Last time I went in the GWML there was still loads of HSTs around but with more 800s arriving that may change.

    Now we just hope and pray that the alleged re-thinking by Hitachi into the state of the seating goes ahead, and we get more comfy seating, cause even with the added legroom etc, those seats are rather hard-back.
    Nice catches though; despite their bad qualities, they still look relatively nice, the GWR livery works well on them.

    The new 800 looks rather like an HST javelin, the javelin's run on pick up rail and pantograph

    Why do some 800’s enter Didcot heading to the country in Diesel mode? Wouldn’t you switch power modes once you’re stopped at Didcot?

    • @allmyothersubscriptions
      @allmyothersubscriptions 7 лет назад +2

      The class 800's and 802's switch to diesel just before entering Didcot Parkway; especially the express services that do not stop at Didcot Parkway itself.

    • @nothisispatrick5725
      @nothisispatrick5725 6 лет назад +1

      If that put the pantograph up at speed the wires would come down

    • @CyclicPilot
      @CyclicPilot 6 лет назад +2

      There's no fundamental problem with changing over at speed, all new bi-mode trains are designed to change over automatically at line speed. They just haven't got the automated system working well enough to be failsafe (I don't know the technical details of why it's not working yet)

    • @agent_605
      @agent_605 6 лет назад

      I believe the fast services change just before Didcot, as well as services going onto the Oxford branch, however stopping services normally switch when sat in the station, maybe the Driver was used to driving express services so did it before stopping

      Somewhat pedantic response. Cosmetic,ie, designed to increase the beauty and hide the defects of something. Power mode is irrelevant. Consider this lesson to the meaning of the word 'Cosmetic' a public service. As you wander aimlessly through life, at least you'll remember the word cosmetic and it's meaning.
