When it was released, Home Alone 2 was bashed by critics and a slight disappointment to fans. It was seen as a worthless rehash of the original. All these years later, it has become just as beloved, if not more beloved than Home Alone. I personally think it's a better movie overall. Yes, it's the same...only funnier with more heart and better production values. John Williams' score is great too, especially "Christmas Star."
gokinsmen that sorta reminds me of how some view Star Wars: The Force Awakens as rehash of a new hope. Sure it has a lot of plot similarities to that movie, and a bit from Empire and Jedi, but I wouldn't go as far as to call it a rehash. How people view as a remake of a new hope honestly overshadows the other qualities of the movie, such as overall writing and storytelling for what it is (even if the plot is recycled) with the new characters and situations. Acting, cinematography, settings, pacing, characters, editing, visuals, how the score is used, how everything is displayed. The home alone 2 backlash sorta reminds me of some unfair amount of hate the Force Awakens got. I also recently saw Home Alone 2, and realized it shares a lot of plot similarities of Home Alone, but despite that, it didn't really bother me, I still thought there were a lot of entertaining scenes. It's just something I thought I should put out there, since the Home Alone backlash sorta reminds me of some Force Awakens backlash.
I was thinking the same thing. Both HA2 and TFA didn't get enough credit for all the new elements they added. And like you said, there's so much more to a movie (even a "popcorn" entertainment) than plot. Character, dialogue, cinematography, editing, score, production design, etc.. Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade was also bashed by many as a rehash when it first came out and now it's almost as beloved as Raiders. Meanwhile, many so-called original films are also "ripoffs" of previous ones, from Fury Road to Whiplash. Those films are great, but they're actually as derivative as HA2 or TFA. Only general audiences aren't as familiar with the movies they "copied." Of course, I don't think we should weep for TFA, it received stellar reviews from critics and made $2B.
gokinsmen well spoken. Speaking of which, I still have yet to see Fury Road from start to finish. From what I hear it's quite good, and well made. Even the original Star Wars had borrowed elements from other movies, such as the opening credits. It was still exceptionally made though, and did develop an interesting galactic power struggle, and mythos of the force. Even if TFA was derivative of A New Hope, and a bit of Empire Strikes Back and Return of the Jedi, I thought the Force Awakens was a very fun, and quite the well made movie, and did a lot of aspects really well. The actors could capture the character's emotions really well, and their characters as well. They were quite expressive and got the tone of the character's well in each situation they're in, whether their in a bind, struggle, an emotional situation, etc. The facial expressions and body language were excellent as well, by the main characters, and some others as well. The cinematography was excellent, each shot was done nicely, and how they could capture that much in the same shot, how freely the camera could move and capture each situation. I especially love the panning of the camera, like where a character would be going, like BB-8 spotting First Order shuttles and heads off to warn Poe. How it shows Han heading to the cockpit of the Millenium Falcon, then turns to a front shot when he arrives, and likely reminisces in his mind his memories he's had in that cockpit, in that ship. The settings also looked nice, and I loved that they used practical effects, and real sets for several scenes. I liked the Jakku set, both the village, and junkyard area. The Illenium system setting was also nice, and the resistance base was set up and capture very nicely. I loved how it showed they're resources around, and tents set up, it shows a very nice resistance base. I also liked the first order locations, how they were set up, and what resources they have. I also liked the characters as well, they were quite interesting and nicely introduced. I like the display for each character, Finn being a traumatized, anxious ex-stormtrooper, turned into a loyal companion and friend. Rey being a scavenger turned into potential jedi, I also like how it shows how she lives as a scavenger, and how she lives in general, and shows her marking how many days it's been. Poe being a warm hearted, daring, friendly pilot, and loyal member of the resistance. Kylo Ren being a motivated, but struggling villain, who has both an ambitious side, but also emotional insecurity and a pull to the light. That makes quite the interesting character. I like how they were all introduced. I also like the balanced tone, with the suspenseful storytelling, especially when it comes to plot points and approaches, and lighthearted tone with the characters interactions, and even getting exciting at points, and heartwarming during reunions. To be honest, despite the recycled plot, I really like and enjoy the Force Awakens, and I think it's a pretty damn well made and enjoyable movie. And despite the recycled Home Alone plot in Home Alone 2, I still really enjoyed that as well. Speaking of which, that reminds me of how Empire Strikes Back received negative criticism at the time of its release, and now it's considered to be the best Star Wars movies. I also think it's one of the best in the series, if not "the" best in the series. I do genuinely think think that despite how a majority of the fandom may think, that the Force Awakens will age quite well, and much better than the Prequels did, like I Hate Everything said on JAR Media. Overall, I do think there are things that some of these people see that overshadow how the other stuff are. But in time, maybe these people may learn that, and even if their opinions won't entirely change, they could at least acknowledge other aspects, even if they may dislike other things.
Those are great points. I was very skeptical of Abrams when he was announced as Ep7 director. I've never really liked anything he did before (it was competent at best) and I questioned his abilities as a visual storyteller. But he (and Dan Mindel) really stepped up his game and delivered by far the best work of his career. That wordless 4min. introduction to Rey was the moment I knew we were in good hands. I agree that TFA will age very well, especially with today's kids, just like Last Crusade did with our generation.
I also like when Kevin electrocutes Marv when he's trying to clean himself off. The comedy skeleton is straight out of a cartoon. Also before that when Kevin takes their picture while they are robbing the toy store and Marv smiles like a muppet.
I’m fairly certain that this movie got Chris Columbus in the directorial chair for Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone. The street at night scene is very reminiscent of Knockturn Alley, the toy store conveys the same magic and detail as the Great Hall in Hogwarts, and the park shows that Columbus knows how to make a creepy forest. And of course he’s great with kids.
Still have a TalkBoy, HA2 is a classic. One of my fav lines," Don't gimme that! You've been smoochin' wit everybody! Snuffy, Al, Leo, Little Moe with the gimpy leg, Cheeks, Boney Bob, Cliff." So good. Happy Holidays, John. Cheers!
1 second cameo, and Trump apparently DEMANDED it since he owned the hotel they were filming at... that certainly takes away the charm of the scene,,, no, wait... it was never actually there in the first place,,, Trump was never handsome, never cool, not even when he was younger -- far too pouty and glossy gay lips and tiny feminine hands on him
***** They always seem to be left out when people talk about his best films like Pretty in Pink. Planes Trains, Breakfast Club etc. Probably because he didn't direct them and like Luis said, the director always gets the credit even when the success is clearly in the writing.
Home Alone 2 to this day is still my favorite Christmas movie of all time that's seen at the hotel room and when Mark was getting hit by Brick still make me laugh so bad. I first saw it when I was 7 and I'm 22 years old now and I still laugh just as hard
If I remember correctly, Marv grabs the money bag after they leave the building and head to the park. Harry tells Marv "Get the bag!" as they're running after Kevin.
My wife and I went to the Plaza hotel when we honeymooned in NYC, the main entrance hadn't really changed at all since 1992, although we didn't go much further in than that because we were worried we had set off the poor person detectors.
True story: my wife and I went into the Plaza Hotel when we were honeymooning in NYC, we were only in there for bout 2 minutes before leaving as we both were reasonably certain we had set off the poor person alarm when we entered and security were on the way to kick us out.
I remember back in the mid 90's wishing I had a talkboy and low and behold after seeing the movie I went to the store with my grandmother and I found one. It was in home alone 2 packaging, not a cheap nock off, and she bought it for me. I couldn't believe my luck because I wanted one so badly! It even had an extendable mic and slowmo playback! I can't believe they didn't sel them in America, surely someone sold them over there
Im at work and one of these teen kids is named Macaulay. I asked his friend 'do you ever call him Kevin ? ' - blank face - " Kevin Mc Callister ?'' - blank face - '' Have you seen Home Alone ?'' - "' no '' I replied you had no childhood
Comparing Home Alone 1 and 2 is like comparing Deadpool 1 and 2. The first movie is the best of the two, but the 2nd movie is more re-watchable and it has a very similar feel to the first movie.
Dude your channel is the bomb! You are one of the several inspirations behind the making of our channel haha keep on inspiring others man! PS I can bench 315 so if you ever wanna make a nerdy workout collab that would make my entire life
Macaulay Culkin was paid $4,500,000 to star in this movie, the biggest salary ever to an eleven-year-old (at the time of filming) child actor. Daniel Stern said a pigeon really flew into his mouth. "That was revolting." Catherine O'Hara was worried her character wasn't trying hard enough to find Kevin. Scenes were added to show her concern. O'Hara said she practiced her sad" face at home. Brenda Fricker's character the "Pigeon Lady" was based on the "old bird woman" from Mary Poppins (1964). Macaulay Culkin's brother Kieran again played the role of the bedwetting cousin, Fuller.
TBH, my favourite line in the movie is when Tim Curry is crawling up to Kevin in the elevator and seethes "You little sh--" It's not that funny in the movie, but for some reason that line just stuck with me as a classic.
I was 12 years old when Home Alone 2 was released in the cinema. I enjoyed it at the time but looking back on the two films and critiquing them as an adult, Home Alone 1 is better imo. You'd expect the original to be better but it's not just that dynamic that makes it a better film. Home Alone 2 is way OTT... everything from the acting to the almost constant melodramatic soundtrack playing in the background, the latter of which makes it an effort to watch. All they really did was take the first film and inject it with steroids. Don't get me wrong, Home Alone 2 is entertaining but that's because of the awesome duo between Joe Pesci and Daniel Stern which is a more or less guaranteed laugh.
i really like both of these movies, the later ones are okay too , though these are just really funny, yet when u think about it, the favorite scenes except when kevin once again deals with harry and marv, is when he visits a hotel, and when he visits a toy store, it makes u wonder how scenic new york was in the early 90s,
Talkboys were actually a real thing. Tiger Electronics got so many requests for them after this movie came out that they made them for a limited time. I actually saw one at a garage sale one time.
Oh great, my memory is just working fine. It just wasn´t the first movie, it was this one, where Kevin had this REALLY AWESOME scream!! I got a little confused for a moment, how that sounded in Chris´ review...
Dude I agree with pretty much this entire video lol. I still quote this movie from when I was a kid. Tim Curry was legendary in this movie. "I love you" hahahahahaha
The bag of money left behind at Uncle Rob’s House was tell tale of the vendetta Marv and Harry had for Kevin McCallister after he got them busted in the first movie and all the traps. When he is not around and they are after the goods, they’ll forget about him. But if he is around, they are on his trail, cause then it’s personal.
I watched this movie over and over on cable TV every year when I was a kid and have to say the violence in this movie is quite a bit more extreme than in the first one.
Loved this review. I'm a die hard fan of Home Alone 2. I waited until the end of your review to see if maybe you'd correct yourself, but you didn't so I will. Yeah I'm sorry to be that guy, but at 5:44, he throws bricks at MARV'S face. You accidentally said Harry. Other than that, I love this review.
*Well, I`m going out on a limb here, but I guess after 4 breaks into your head you`d forget not only about ur money but you`d forget ur name and what year this is*
The "throw down your camera" thing never made sense to me. It's a Polaroid camera. It prints the pictures instantly. So the pictures that Kevin took of the sticky bandits weren't in the camera. Throwing the camera down to them wouldn't have done them any good whatsoever, since Kevin obviously had the actual pictures on him already.
that is a toy store. it's FAO shwarz being from New York it was our school trip every year. and yes its so Manhattan that it looks that way. but it has toys, cool ones. . . I believe it's the same toy store used in the movie BIG. LOVE FLICK PICK BROTHA.
Chris Stuckmann sent me here, but i was already a fan. Friendship rocks.
I actually think Home Alone 2 is better than Home Alone but that doesn't mean I don't enjoy Home Alone because I do. Great review John!

Home Alone 1 and 2 are best ones. True Christmas flicks.
I'm still wondering...why is no one talking about the Donald Trump cameo in Home Alone 2 ?
The french Timelord because he's just in the movie for a second.
He's still in the movie.
The french Timelord unless you blink but still I didn't he was in the movie until now but oh well fuck it.
...wat ?
The french Timelord probably because it's just a freaking cameo
Two words to sum up this movie: TIM CURRY 🖤🖤
I laugh my ass of everytime i see that brick scene.
Agreed, its the funniest part by far.
The only thing that's better is when Marv yells "suck brick, kid!"
I also like when Kevin electrocutes Marv when he's trying to clean himself off.
The comedy skeleton is straight out of a cartoon.
Also before that when Kevin takes their picture while they are robbing the toy store and Marv smiles like a muppet.
When I was really young, I used to not like the throwing bricks part. But for awhile now, it's been pretty hilarious.
Uncle Frank: Get outta here you nosy little pervert or I'll slap you silly!
One of my favourite lines in this movie!
I’m fairly certain that this movie got Chris Columbus in the directorial chair for Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone.

Dan Schoening "It's a lie!"
Awww, no talk about the Trump cameo? I think we all look at that cameo very differently now.
King of Wakanda not really. It's just a cameo.
Jesus Christ don't you have anything better to do than comment on every fucking video that comes out?
Dr. Manhattan No, no he doesn't. You know why?
BECAUSE HE'S CATMAN!!!
This is still my favorite Trump cameo: ruclips.net/video/eo1AyHnJjDE/видео.html
1 second cameo, and Trump apparently DEMANDED it since he owned the hotel they were filming at... that certainly takes away the charm of the scene,,, no, wait... it was never actually there in the first place,,, Trump was never handsome, never cool, not even when he was younger -- far too pouty and glossy gay lips and tiny feminine hands on him
Why did neither Chris or John give credit to the great John Hughes who wrote this movies.
***** Isn't that the truth.
***** They always seem to be left out when people talk about his best films like Pretty in Pink. Planes Trains, Breakfast Club etc. Probably because he didn't direct them and like Luis said, the director always gets the credit even when the success is clearly in the writing.
You have an INSANE amount of energy...
Subscribed. Keep up the crazy presence you BLAST at your camera. :D
I always found this home alone more re-watchable too. The friendship between the kid and the pigeon lady always hit me hard.
I like home alone 2 better because it doesnt feel as trapped as the first one. Its lie an adventure, Kevin goes to several places.
Right the 1st one is basically 1 location I think 2 is better also
Loved your slo mo Kevin's recorder impression. That honestly makes me do it as well.
came from Chris stuckman and I'm glad!!
Curley Pubes *Stuckmann
Home alone soundtrack is absolutely amazing. Somewhere In My Memory - John Williams at his best. Just wow!
Great review. Merry Christmas John
hahahahha it always cracks me up when kevin throws the bricks LOL
I'm surprised you didn't mention Trump's cameo scene
You and Chris Stuckmann should review McCaully Caulkin movies, starting with Saved!
Macaulay*
Daniel Stern getting electrocuted whilst trying to wash paint off himself is one of the funniest scenes ever.
the bit when marv gets shocked and they both get shot in the nuts with a staple gun always has me in stitches.
Home Alone 2 to this day is still my favorite Christmas movie of all time that's seen at the hotel room and when Mark was getting hit by Brick still make me laugh so bad. I first saw it when I was 7 and I'm 22 years old now and I still laugh just as hard
The real question about this series is how the hell was Kevin's dad getting money like that
For me Home Alone 2 > Home Alone 1. I just felt like the up the stakes pretty well. Also... I'm from New York. So I had an obvious bias.
If I remember correctly, Marv grabs the money bag after they leave the building and head to the park. Harry tells Marv "Get the bag!" as they're running after Kevin.
Have a great Christmas John and your Lady as well !
Home Alone 3 is pretty good, dare I say, even underrated.
do yourself a favor, just watch home alone 1 and 2, and pretend that home alone 3, 4 and 5 never been made
i thought 3 was good 4 was shit and i havent seen 5
cengiz temi guess what? *sigh* disney channel just had to show home alone 3 and 5 -____-
so it's good that i don't have the disney channel?
***** *facepalm*
+Diego Hernandez SHUT UP!! 3 was way better than any of them!
My wife and I went to the Plaza hotel when we honeymooned in NYC, the main entrance hadn't really changed at all since 1992, although we didn't go much further in than that because we were worried we had set off the poor person detectors.
When I say 'went to' I mean visited because of this movie, not stayed in, it's like $1000/night in the cheapest rooms.
True story: my wife and I went into the Plaza Hotel when we were honeymooning in NYC, we were only in there for bout 2 minutes before leaving as we both were reasonably certain we had set off the poor person alarm when we entered and security were on the way to kick us out.
"aint much better in here, kid"
I rewatched the film and I saw Marv grab the bag filled with money right before chasing Kevin to the park
I appreciate that you consistently refer to Kevin as Kevin McCallister
Merry Christmas Flickster!
That part when Marv gets electrocuted and becomes a skeleton was the scariest part for me as a kid. Forget the dove lady, skellingtons are spooky yo.
Im at work and one of these teen kids is named Macaulay. I asked his friend 'do you ever call him Kevin ? ' - blank face - " Kevin Mc Callister ?'' - blank face - '' Have you seen Home Alone ?'' - "' no ''
I replied you had no childhood
Comparing Home Alone 1 and 2 is like comparing Deadpool 1 and 2. The first movie is the best of the two, but the 2nd movie is more re-watchable and it has a very similar feel to the first movie.
Good review John, I own the first two Home Alone movies on Blu-Ray.
I've heard of double denim before...but I have never seen double Macaulay Culkin 😂
Love it John :)
Dude your channel is the bomb! You are one of the several inspirations behind the making of our channel haha keep on inspiring others man! PS I can bench 315 so if you ever wanna make a nerdy workout collab that would make my entire life
I honestly love this one more then the first. Both amazing though.
Great review as always John, merry Christmas
I love Home Alone 2 than one. Probably cause i love NY.
Also I love the Pigeon Lady in the movie.
Macaulay Culkin was paid $4,500,000 to star in this movie, the biggest salary ever to an eleven-year-old (at the time of filming) child actor.
Daniel Stern said a pigeon really flew into his mouth. "That was revolting."
Catherine O'Hara was worried her character wasn't trying hard enough to find Kevin.
TBH, my favourite line in the movie is when Tim Curry is crawling up to Kevin in the elevator and seethes "You little sh--"
It's not that funny in the movie, but for some reason that line just stuck with me as a classic.
Love your energy dude.
Hey John, when are you going to do a new Blu Ray collection video? It's been over a year since the last one
I was 12 years old when Home Alone 2 was released in the cinema. I enjoyed it at the time but looking back on the two films and critiquing them as an adult, Home Alone 1 is better imo. You'd expect the original to be better but it's not just that dynamic that makes it a better film. Don't get me wrong, Home Alone 2 is entertaining but that's because of the awesome duo between Joe Pesci and Daniel Stern which is a more or less guaranteed laugh.
Most of the time ill watch both 1 & 2 during Christmas Love Home alone
where you get the home alone sweater? I need that in my life
Thank you for this holiday review :D
i really like both of these movies, the later ones are okay too , though these are just really funny, yet when u think about it, the favorite scenes except when kevin once again deals with harry and marv, is when he visits a hotel, and when he visits a toy store, it makes u wonder how scenic new york was in the early 90s,

TALK BOY! Whenever my wife mentions our credit card I HAVE to say, "Creddiiittt carddd?? Youuu gotttt itttt..."
Great video John.
funny, chris uploaded home alone 1 review KEK
Dude I agree with pretty much this entire video lol. I still quote this movie from when I was a kid. Tim Curry was legendary in this movie. "I love you" hahahahahaha
sir there are plenty of apps that do what you suggest, infact dumb phones could record and slow sound in 1999
I love this review! Thank you, John!
Love your videos John!
This Is definitely a MUST WATCH every year. Tim Curry's caracter is the most creepiest to me but he also played Pennywise so there you have it.
I remember wanting that talk boy after watching this film so bad but it was way too expensive for my parents
that got real dark John at 1:10
Does that mean Jeremy Johns will be doing Home Alone 3?
Maybe this will be the Christmas that I finally see this one
Home Alone 1 and 2 are really great!
4 was pretty meh, and I've never seen 3 and 5.
HMM There is a 5?
HMM it suck
3,4,5 are terrible
Electric Skittlesكت
+HMM WATCH NUMBER THREE!!! it's better than this overrated crap!
I had a talk boy thingy when I was little! I loved it in the movie and my parents bought it for me. totally forgot about it until your review. lol
*Well, I`m going out on a limb here, but I guess after 4 breaks into your head you`d forget not only about ur money but you`d forget ur name and what year this is*
Donald Trump is in this movie
Riley Conway yep.
God bless Donald Trump..Nah, im kidding. Fuck him.
Riley Conway Arnold Schwarzenegger, more movies and more political experience. He wins.
Riley 'The Troll' Conway I still can't believe that Donald trump was in the same movie with Tim Curry.
I laughed so hard both yours and Chris reviews.
I just came from Stuckman's channel. Now you're telling me to go back there. I guess I'm STUCK in a loop MAN. Hahaha get it.... uugh -.-
As Much as I love The 1st Home Alone Lost in New York is the Best in the entire Franchise
Going from Chris's video to this one right away.
does jeff jahns review number 3?
Great review :)
I want that sweater. Where?
Actually Marv grabs the money bag just before they take Kevin to central park
do you take requests?
That guy in the cab looks like he could be your father, lol.
1:38 I really thought John was about to say Donald Trump bc he is actually in the movie
I had a talkboy when I was young...... Those were the days!
