    I almost cried when I heard the news. I hope we will see this game, because this is THE game I have been looking for in my entire life.

    Just look at the league. Riot really don't like the point and click playstyle, that is why they reboot the project. when Ghost left the team, they said that they don't want to make a game that you can already play aka wow clone. For me, a third person action combat, mmo, would be awesome, something like bdo or tera, maybe even like smite, but I'm way more interested in the classes and weapons, the skills and specializations and the interaction we can have with the league characters

    The ONLY thing I want them to take from WoW would be the dungeon/raid and loot system. Getting loot drops in WoW is easily the most satisfying part of the game and having set gear and loot tables makes it a lot easier to balance rather than RNG stats or something else. As for combat, I'd like to see a new take on action combat. I would also like to see them take inspiration from life skills from BDO.

    This video is incredibly well made!
    Well I thought that I was heavily invested in Project MMO (and of course I still am) but I'm convinced that Spun can take up a part-time as a professional detective the way he's putting these elite concepts together.
    I couldn't agree more, that must be (at least quite closely) what has happened with the project it just makes so much sense!

    I need this game more than anyone could imagine. I love the IP and the lore. When I finally play it it will enrich my experience 100 fold.
    Like it did for me in WoW.

    For launch, I don't care If the game has only few classes. I don't care If the game has only 20 hours of story. I don't care If there are not enough dungeons. I rather prefer quality over quantity and I think Riot is on the right path with that.
    For the combat and holy trinity part, I'd actually like to see a system where you have to cast abilities depending on the situation. As much as I love ESO, combat is spamming spells almost only. I'd actually like to see a League combat system in 3rd person, if that makes sense.

      I think ghostcrawler stepped down because he didn't like the quality of the product he was working on, so I'm not so sure if they're on the right path with this one.

    What defines a good action combat anyway? Is it the dodge? Having a reticle in your screen? The commitment based attacks paired with percision based positioning or the lack there of by having animation cancelling? Is it the polished cinematic animations with flinching, stuns and staggers when dishing out or recieving attacks? Is it the minimal hotbar replaced by contextual attacks and combos? There's a lot of directions this thing could go.
    I'm playing Dragon's Dogma 2 right now and I have observed that a lot of those things don't exist in it's combat format despite being heavily action oriented and having cinematic animations to make it look "action packed". Stun locks and flinches are minimal, there's no dodge save for the nimble thief yet posiitioning is still important, the holy trinity gameplay is distinct and roles are essential and gear matters greatly. If it's dumbed down visually and implemented a hard-lock feature I'd say it plays pretty close to a tab-target mmo only with minimal skills and having a monster climbing mechanic.
    I can personally imagine them just taking LoL's combat and turn it into a 3rd person perspective with a hardlock/tab-target or cursor targetting, and just make the animations look cinematic to give it the illusion of it being "action-packed" and like DD, it doesn't have to rely on the existence of a universal dodge or a reticle or flinching from every attack.

      It’s a really good question.
      At the end of the day it’s something that is fun to play and when it comes to an MMO should be fun for 1000s of hours.
      Some combat like elden ring as example is really fun but if it was copy pasted into an mmo I think might get annoying for that long of gameplay.
      Hopefully the people at riot can use there experience and RnD to come up with the perfect combat.

      ​​​​​​​@@oheyspunAction RPG combat like ER or Horizon is cool and I vouched for that heavily at 1st. But now I'd like to take GC's point to mind: how does that system accomodate healers and AOEs that need that percise targetting? His solution is a modern take of a hybrid system like GW2 or AoC. I reckon it would look more action'y with the right animations and visual flare without disregarding the pool of class skills, aoe and cursor targetting that optimizes the gameplay for healers and casters.. for KBM at least. Dunno how that translates to console/gamepads though.
      Action RPGs like ER is fun despite the minimal character/weapons skills because of the variety of contextual attacks + the main factor: the engaging enemy designs and mechanics.
      MMOs always had this problem. BDO has arguably the best MMO combat rn but mobs are just fodder with little to no engagement at all.. you just group them up and wipe em without them doing sht to you. And the bosses and massive pvp are jank cause the pacing is too fast for people in places with high ping. Also very low draw distance on players that zips around like the flash. Enemies/bosses with mechanics in every MMO even just a little are praised heavily cause they're engaging. Imagine if they did that to overworld mobs. That would massively elevate whatever action combat system they're going for imo. I don't even mind if they just did Song of Nunu but with extra steps. Just make each encounter engaging even with the smallest and weakest of grind fodders.
      This is probably their biggest conundrum and could spark endless debates in their studio..

      If they could solve this they could easily create the best MMO combat of all time.

      @@oheyspun Right? I mean if they nail that aspect they can probably just tune everything else around it. Content, technical sht like server and rendering limitation, traversal. Most MMO systems already exists they just have to slap the ones that'll work in their direction and fine tune all together. Gear, housing, economy, mini-games, events etc or some new unique system they might come up with. Not saying it's easy but even a lot of mobile cash grabs that spout out of nowhere have them just not tuned or implemented right and most of the time the combat sucks. lol GL Riot. See you in the 2030s if sht doesn't hit the fan.

      This should not even be a question.
      The answer is that it should have all the things you listed combined together aka result would be TERA Online.
      And DD, Elden Ring etc. are NOT action combat games.

    Hey Spun, I'd like to mention something that might give hope to those eagerly awaiting the Riot MMO. As you said, Riot never discusses games they aren't planning to release, and they don't bother with projects they think will be average or mere copies of existing games. While they do draw inspiration from other games, they don't just copy-paste; instead, they analyze what works well and enhance it, while also addressing shortcomings. They always strive to understand what players want from a particular genre or game, and consistently deliver on those expectations. We've seen this approach with Valorant, which has been a massive success. Currently, they're applying the same philosophy to their fighting game, which has the FGC buzzing with excitement. Despite not even being in beta yet, the game shows significant improvement and boasts stunning visuals, along with a fast and fluid combat system that will captivate fighting game enthusiasts. Riot has a knack for crafting compelling combat systems. Interestingly, their fighting game was the first to be announced, then they went silent for a few years before resurfacing with substantial progress updates.
    This is not the first time they've gone dark for a game after announcing it, rest assured.

      I think it's a little hard to compare undertaking a mmorpg with a shooter or fighting game. I don't mean to knock those genres, but I think they rely much more on technical and aesthetic prowess, whereas the challenges with a mmorpg span much wider. Although I think you are also allowed to iterate a lot more (by the playerbase) after release in a mmorpg, so if the roots are solid, the tree can grow strong over time, I guess.

    I think, for the longest time, I didn't want a wow clone as much as I wanted a WoW replacement. WoW was kind of getting very stale and had too much obligatory stuff for the things I wanted to do, but with Dragonflight they fixed a lot of that and with the Worldsoul Saga, it feels like they're doing something good with the story and vibes. Now I think I'm much more open to Riot doing something new to differentiate themselves, since the option will probably be there to pick whichever I feel like at a given point in time. I think that's a good thing for the genre and both games will have to improve content rather than just player retention features (which might already have happened for WoW?), which one would assume also trickles down to other games. All in all, I've become more contend to let Riot cook.

    I hope they can re-create TERA Onlines action combat system and on top of it even improve it further.
    TERA has by far the best combat system that ever existed.
    It is a shame that no developer can surpass TERAs combat system that was developed in 2008.

    I would love to see the riot game MMORPG get made, and played through and Tab Target works fantastically unique style game play. Ad far as an action MMORPG is a short way to go because Tera has been the only only Tab Target MMORPG that has worked decent ly. Tera is the one game that did it successfully and hnat was mostly because tanks could lock themselves into place.
    . It your not able to pull it off at 100% you are just better off with tab Target or just plane tab lock game ..I actually don’t think that this is there aim. I actually think that riot is finally an MMORPG that has set its sights on breaking the Holy Trinity and I pray for this. I’d love to see a game that takes the Rift approach to gaming. In Rift you get 4 main specs Mage, Rouge, Priest and Fighter genre’s. Then the 4 archetypes got about 5or 6 souls. Just taking the soul and with n5-6 souls in each important iThe Fighter had 3 tanking souls, void kings, paladin, sword and board tank. Then you got two DPS roles . One for dual while attacking, a Beast Tamer DPS role and lastly a healing role based off of DPS abilities healing by dmg done and by the sigils built that healed player. Which you used to build up its power through attacks and finally executing the Abilities, healing froth more. Think monk healer.
    The Mage. The mage healed with its Clozrohmancer spec that converted dmg to healing but also just had plan spells for healing. The Arcon, ChampionPaladin
    ParaReave rRiftbladeVoid Knight. Warlord.
    Clerics have- Cabalist, Druid, Inquisitor, Justicar (only Tank.) Purifier, a shaman, Sentinel, Shaman, Warden. So Cleric has 1 tank, 3 healers and Warden 3 healers. 1 tank. 1 re
    Rouge has - You have a bunch, have 1 bard, one blade gov, DPS Bladedancer, Marksman, , Night-blade, physician, Riftstalker and Saboteu.
    Each spec had a support spec. Came with off heals. And CC, but it was needed.they worded.

    They have the ingredients to make a game as big and culturally relevant as WoW in its prime, however I would advise them to not copy it and make a tab target themepark mmo because WoW is still around and its far from its prime due to stagnation and tons of decisions that continually chip away at their playerbase.
    Take the time and do their homework on the current big dogs of the genre: WoW, ESO, FF14, GW2, etc. and really understand what makes them stand out, what works for them and what doesnt.
    If the plan really is to do action combat, id suggest studying BDO, Tera, SMITE (although it isnt an mmo, its action combat could be transfered to one).
    While breaking from the holy trinity intrigues me it rarely ever works out. The only game i can think of that sort of does it well in its pve combat is Destiny.

    My hope as a very, very niche part of the MMO community? Please be more RP accessible than fucking ESO LMAO. Cause god, I love the elder scrolls, but what they did with some of it's core structures makes it so hard to RP in ESO, the community has to jump through hoops just to have some coherent group where WoW and FFXIV have servers and UIs that make it work so much better.

    Pure speculation here... If what the riot team has reset is the gameplay, what state of development do you think they are at?

      I think the state of development is often times focused on too much. It’s very fluid. They may have reset combat for example but every box, rat, tree and model isn’t necessarily reset. Sound design, ui/ux for example can still be used but may need tweaks.
      I guess my point here is that a reset doesn’t imply starting over from 0. Games especially MMOs are so modular in design that they are not erasing everything.
      Personally unless specifically stated I don’t like guessing production or preproduction etc. Especially because the definition of these terms vary between developers and even projects.
      All I know is they are still working on it and every day gets us closer. 😎

    maybe not WoW with runeterra paint, but more like GW2 with RT paint. I want the deep story, and amazing polish of WoW, and just blizzard games in general, but WoW mechanics, and abilities are soooo overblown. I want my character to have a few abilities max. If I need addons to manage my action bars, weak auras, etc, you've gone too far.
