Thomas, your videos are one of the main drivers that pushed me into deciding to pursue CW....I started a couple months ago and THIS video has one of my first contacts...thank you! 73 de AI4TB
I'm famous! I loved hearing my exchange at 29:30... except for the few mistakes I made! Thanks for the park and hope to work you again soon. 73 de WD4EWZ.
Thanks for sharing a nice video. I did POTA as well yesterday, the coldest day in MA 2023, the temp dropped -14F, but I did, and was happy to be survived, de KC1ATW
"Sometimes a text will go through..." Also a great note for when there's an emergency and the towers are overloaded. Texts will go through quicker and more reliably than data, calls, or anything else.
Hey Thomas, greetings from the UK! Great video. I really love that antenna, how easy to deploy and to pack specially for travelling. I wounded if together with the bipod it would fit well the TX500? Thanks for sharing
Hi, Vitor, Gosh--I'm not sure I've ever tried to pair the AX1 directly with the TX-500. I may give that a go. Since the TX-500 has no internal ATU, you'd need to build a capacity hat for the AX1 to finish off the match on 20 meters (not sure 40 or 17M would work without an ATU).
Honestly? My technique is to try not to think too hard while listening to the pileup. If I'm relaxed, I hear a couple letters in the pileup, then call back with those.
Thomas (or anyone else hanging around), do you know if there's a little handheld straight key like there are little handheld paddles? I've ordered the parts to build (several of) the VK3IL pressure paddles, but Long Island CW Club says you need to use a straight key to learn, so I'd like to find one of those as well. Maybe the VK3IL paddle can be modified into a straight key somehow?
So most radios will treat the right paddle of any key as a straight key. I suppose you could simply lay the VK3IL paddles flat and try to straight key that way. I've never tried, but now I will! :)
Hi, Mike, I don't think I've ever shown a video of how I use it, but I basically connect the headphones output of the radio to the input of the recorder, then plug my headphones into the recorder. Back at the QTH, I export the audio file into Final Cut Pro (my editor), sync the audio, then combine them before exporting the video final.
can we just get a video of the 12valve? i need a break from practicing CW via your videos and i have a 6.7 cummins that sounds not near as beautiful as the 12 valve lol
Agreed. Would love a tour of the truck. I had a 2005 manual. Currently have a 2010 automatic. I like the engine brake on the 2010 but I sure miss the manual transmission.
Mine is a 1997 manual with an extended cab. This year, I'm going to invest in fixing up the interior (normal wear and tear stuff). I do love this truck. My driveway requires 4WD and this truck can tow anything up it.
The credibility of your unedited field videos eclipses that of any other gear-review channel. If Elecraft reads this, they should know that I bought the KX2/AX1 rig because of you.

I am honored, Todd! Well done on your CW journey!!!
Actually, I was using the KX2 and a Par Electronics tri-band end-fed from Park K-1611 / K-6544. Our first P2P contact!
Woo hoo!!!

You did a great job, Bob! So great to work you, OM!
New Thomas on a Monday morning? Heck yes.

I heard “A E I” as well.
I unfortunately I was sick on this day and it was freezing in Illinois.
Ugh. Glad that day is in your past. :)

I don’t know how you pick out one call during the little pileups at the beginning of the exchange. I guess practice.

Awesome, my log shows I worked you on this day 17 meters, I hope to hear myself again. Your carbon footprint Thomas! Just kidding. 72/73 de AI5DD
Ha ha! Yes, that 17M video is later this week!
Hi Thomas, can you or do you have a video showing how you use your digital recorder? I have a SONY ICD-PX370

@@ThomasK4SWL nice. Can't beat a Cummins and manual transmission. Love your videos.

Thank you so much. I must say that I think that I could use the KX2 and AX1 pair for all of my activations if I wished. It's an effective combo!
