    OK. It is your fault. I watched a few of ur videos and now I’ve joined the POTA group and have 5 contacts as a “hunter “. Thank you for getting me to try this aspect of our hobby.

    Around here bears come in one of 2 sizes-big bears and the biggest bear you’ve ever seen! I always leave my car unlocked at home because they’ll Just rip off the door handles - all 4 of them - if it’s locked. Fortunately, when They get in they don’t do much damage, pretty much just bear prints everywhere! Thanks for another great video!

      Your bears are MUCH more of an opponent compared with our generally shy and smaller black bears. :)

    Great stuff Thomas! Love your real-time activations. Hope your car is successfully de-beared. Don't feed the bears! Here in Florida we have the same thing with Gators.....don't feed the alligators! Best 73, George K2WO

    • @ThomasK4SWL
      @ThomasK4SWL  2 года назад

      Our saying here is "A fed bear is a dead bear." Sadly, when people feed bears, they turn into nuisance animals and can even become aggressive. Wildlife management ends up euthanizing the poor critters.

    • @k2wo1
      @k2wo1 2 года назад

      @@ThomasK4SWL Yep....same thing here with gators. They end up being euthanized. Very sad situation. For the most part, gators have no interest in people, but when fed they can become very unpredictable.

    Watched this today (same day it was posted) and I hrd you on 40m. but way way down. I listened amost the whole time you were there, and could not get enuf of a signal to jump in. thought abut it few times but did not want to cover up someone who had a better shot at it than i did.
    And it turned out that way most times whenI would have jumped in. some weak station worked you. so rather give the shot to someone else, rather than cover them up etc. Every time this happens I sit here thinking Man! I wish he was kicking out just 2 more watts! ! ha ha. So To-Mas! till next time 73 thnx fer the activations and the videos. de Ellis WA1RKS

      Ha ha! Thank you for trying and listening, OM. So I was definitely weak on 40. A couple of regulars noted this as well. Later, I worked 20M at a different park and it was much better.

    Great discussion on RST. On CW I like RST in the exchange for POTA because I am not great at copying and, even though it’s not particularly important information, it gives the whole exchange enough structure to help me fit it all into place. When I give out RST they may not be S-meter accurate, but they are honest.

    • @n8telyons
      @n8telyons 2 года назад

      My understanding of RST is that S isn’t supposed to be an S-meter reading, but more like what you are now doing. Either way, all good.

      Excellent, Scott! So unfortunately, no car work done then. In fact, it's in the shop right now. One part held up everything. I've been using a rental car while here with the family in the Outer Banks of NC.

    yay, another video to relax with this morning! 72 de AI5DD P.S. your friends probably log their POTA logs to LoTW etc as well, which I do even if I activate. I'm kind of curious why POTA doesn't require a signal report exchange, since that is vital to a valid QSO. You're correct about the readability and strength on what you hear, when the RST system was created there was no S-Meter, also S-Meters are not very precise and vary from radio to radio, especially if you have filters running.

    • @ThomasK4SWL
      @ThomasK4SWL  2 года назад +1

      Good question--I wish I had an answer for you about that. I might need to search the FAQs on the POTA site--I'm sure they've gotten this question before. SOTA does the same thing.

      Frankly, I just like having a paper copy and am so used to making one, I do it even though I keep full logs electronically.

    Excuse me for asking an off topic question, but do you leave the doors unlocked on your car, or do the bears break into the car?

    • @ThomasK4SWL
      @ThomasK4SWL  2 года назад +1

      So there are a couple of philosophies about leaving doors unlocked. If unlocked, the bears get easy access to open and can actually leave the car with little damage. If the doors are locked--and this happened to a neighbor--all four handles might be ripped of and all four doors scratched and dented. There no really good option other than to have a garage or something to protect the vehicle.

    Thomas, as always I enjoy your videos. I’m considering buying the AX1 for use with my KX2 and is it worth the cost and how does it perform on phone? Thanks in advance 73 de W8RLP Roger

    • @ThomasK4SWL
      @ThomasK4SWL  2 года назад

      So, in general, CW is a more efficient mode than SSB. With that said, if you push 10 watts with the KX2, I bet you'll be impressed what you can do with the AX1. I may have to attempt an SSB activation with the AX1 soon. I have certainly used SSB in at least one of my AX1 activations--just can't remember which one! :)

    The RST is completely subjective. It has nothing to do with your S-meter reading. When activating, I appreciate a RST report to let me know how I'm getting out, but like you, I don't log them. As for giving RSTs to hunters, I'm working portable with low power, small antennas, and the hunter is at home with his best antenna and potentially a lot more power. I don't think he needs a accurate RST from my little portable station!

    Fantastic, wish I had more time to learn CW, lol wish I had more time for the hobby in general !
    Thomas, have you heard of the MFJ-935 loop tuner ? I've seen some videos on it and decided to get it to tinker around with different loop sizes depending on the bands I want to work, what particularly interested me was the ability to handle 150 Watts, very convenient for the 891 but has the potential to be a very compact high power quick to deploy setup and just take a little 8.4 Ah LiFeP04 battery I got from Hobby King.
    MFJ have a smaller tuner too for up to 20W the MFJ-9232. Looks pretty cool.
