  • Essen is a city in Germany located in North Rhine-Westphalia. It is part of the Ruhr region, the largest industrial region in Europe and was the European Capital of Culture in 2010. A recognition that marked a paradigm shift. If in the past it was essentially one of the most important industrial centers in Germany, nowadays it stands out for its modernity and for being a valuable cultural hub. There is a lot to see and explore in Essen, one of the most multifaceted German cities.
Three places not to be missed
Essen's most famous tourist attraction is linked to its very strong industrial past. This is the Zollverein Coal Mine Industrial Complex, which boasts World Heritage status. This old coal mine was built in 1932, in the “Bauhaus” style, and was the last in the city to be closed, in 1986. It welcomes guided tours and includes the Ruhr Museum, which tells us the history of industry in the region. Ruhr, from its growth, to its heyday and subsequent decline.
