75 years ago, on 3rd July 1938, a streamlined locomotive called Mallard set the world speed record for steam trains, traveling at 126mph on a straight, downhill stretch of the East Coast Mainline in Britain. The song tells the story of the people who built the train and made it happen.
BBT draw inspiration from feats of engineering in Britains past, trains being a major subject also space exploration, the natural world and folklore. Quirky and romantic always.
Such a great band to hear live too. Thankfully their concerts have been well documented in recent years. But tragically the music world has been robbed of a great voice with the death of David Longdon only a few weeks ago. I hope you do play some more BBT to honour this great singer and band who were really getting into their stride in the last few years. I don't know if they can continue now.

Glad to say they are back with ALBERTO BRAVIN from PFM touring from SEPTEMBER and I’ll be at that first concert. Of course David is irreplaceable but ALBERTO sounds good. If you wondered who DAVID reminded you of he sounded a lot like Peter Gabriel and in fact auditioned for GENESIS when PHIL COLLINS left

Clearly inspired by early 70s Genesis.

one of the best prog rock bands that were actually better live than on the studio album. i know because i was so lucky to see them in 2019 before david passed away.

I’m a fan of 6 years of this band and there are plenty other great tracks to get into , Victorian Brickwork live, Folklore, A Mead Hall In Winter etc. David Longdon passed away in November suddenly and all the BBT fans are saddened for his family and close friends. We are left with some brilliant singing and he also played many instruments including flute. I was honoured to see them live three times. Great choice , keep up the good work.

Heavy Genesis influence, to the point of it being a conscious and obvious effort to record their own version of a 1970's Genesis song. That said, they get a bravo and well done from me. I found this very entertaining.

First time i heard this it kind of pissed me off a bit because of the Genesis "copy" .
But then i realised that if you sound like
a unique band then you will be criticised regardless of the quality.
But if you sound like everybody else nobody care and you will get away with it.
So i started listening without thinking of Genesis and no i love this band.

Genesis yes but I hear some Yes in there also. Very nice! Another one to add to the playlist. Was that a French Horn I heard? ✌❤🤘

This song encompasses everything good that was 1971-78 Genesis. Dave Gregory was in this band. He was also in a cool band called Tin Spirts which I highly recommend. He also played in a little band called XTC. Phenomenal guitarist. Sifa, you're not stoic. We know you're processing🤣! Cool choice guys!

For me the best of BIG BIG TRAIN - the best version is live on MASTERS OF LIGHT IMHO - that whole album/dvd is wonderful! Interestingly David auditioned to replace Phil Collins as singer for Genesis - I never understood why they didn’t snap him up - great singer, flautist, multi instrumentalist, fine composer, expert in harmonies - but he did meet Nick D’Virgilio who became the BBT drummer who DID get the gig with Genesis. Yes reminiscent of Genesis - no bad thing - plus brass and strings. He sounds a lot like early Peter Gabriel. The song is like many BBT tracks about English people - it is about the guys who built a train that broke the world speed record. They have done others about the painter Turner, a heroic pigeon called Winkie, about ship building and the English countryside and traditions. Phenomenal. Their new release WELCOME TO THE PLANET is less epic but the best they have done in a while. So sad David died - this band has had a LOT of setbacks - from cancellations of a major tour due to Covid to losing three key members - and now the death of David. I’m sure they’ll bounce back - they always seem to!

Better than most of the post-neo prog I’ve heard in a long time. The piano intro reminds me of Renaissance.

They really have a cool sound. Their song Victorian Brickwork has some real Yes mixed with an orchestra vibes too if you like their sound.

@@Mime59100 yeah except for the singer, I hear far more Yes influence than Genesis. Love those Ravel sounding piano chords.

Each to their own .. I prefer this to Mr. Wilson and porcupine tree (who I also like). Maybe the subject matter of BBT is preferable to me. In these times of "cancel culture" and hatred of our past I think this and other BBT songs speak volumes of how great our achievements in the west really are !!
