26th January: Republic Day On 26th January 1950 India became a republic. It got its first President. The day is celebrated every year as Republic Day. It is a national festival.
History Behind the day: The Constitution was adopted by the Indian Constituent Assembly on 26 November 1949 and came into effect on 26 January 1950 with a democratic government system, completing the country's transition towards becoming an independent republic.
26 January was chosen as the date for Republic day because it was on this day in 1930 when the Declaration of Indian Independence (Purna Swaraj) was proclaimed by the Indian National Congress as opposed to the Dominion status offered by the British Regime.
In Delhi, a grand celebration is held at Rajpath where the President takes the salute from the parade. Various states exhibit tableaux to show their achievements. Cultural programmes are presented. Brave soldiers are awarded. Brave children are also honoured. Public buildings are lit brightly at night. Functions are also held in state capitals. National flags are unfurled. Patriotic speeches are made. People feel proud of their country. There is an atmosphere of happiness all around.
