What if the Oregon Country became an independent nation with the creation of a compromise between the British and American governments to both have access to the pacific but not fight over the land?

You should look into the history of Columbia, proto-British Columbia. You need to understand that all of the land to the north of the Columbia River was part of the colony, and no Americans were living around there. The British negotation failures and the American ingenuity making their bold offers caused what had always been a British colony had to uproot. Their old capital was Vancouver which I think turned into Columbus and they made a new capital called Vancouver on the 49th parallel.

Polk campaigned on a slogan of "54 40 or fight". He wanted to claim land up to that latitude but would have needed to go to war with Britain to get it. He couldn't get the backing in congress so he then settled for the 49th parallel.

Well that might be the american take, not shared by many. The russians had seal & whale hunted on the coast forprobably centuries, british Capt Cook sailed up north surveying coasts, the french voyagers from 1600 went West with many names left behind. The queen Victoria named upper Oregon British Columbia Colony to keep you yanks out around 1870's. Simon Fraser came over the rockies down his name sake river through that incredible canyon also named after him moving to the ocean well before any americans.

No offense, but you read your script too quickly. It makes this sound like a junior high school student’s project. Like them or not, listen to how Ken Burns’ films are narrated. There’s a reason for that.

0:39,..NOT all immigrants followed, believed in, agreed with or ever supported that Wagon Train ‘Manifest Destiny Attitude’ the take from others ethos. There were many Prussian families who knew the devastation and intent of invasion, how violence is always the outcome born of cultural invaders. My fathers ancestors, my paternal side of the family, abhorred forced colonization and the outright Slaughter of the First Nations peoples here in the Pacific Northwest. My maternal side were different, ‘Methodist Missionaries’ part of ‘the Great Reinforcement’ of Oregon Territories of 1839-1840)their charge was to invade, indoctrinate, & assimilate the Tribal children, kill all resistant elders and overwhelm their culture and destroy their language. This is how type one Manifest Destiny was justified, violent cultural destruction & appropriation, a tactic still used today, just dressed up in more nefarious and evil tactics. The ‘White is Right’ Power Ethos can be seen in the very economic world policy systems, its called ‘Plutocracy’. A sick, brutal and venal manifest destiny! one designed to rape, steal and enslave by jealous evil means & reasons,..to conquer and murder all resistance.
I’ve made a kind of analysis or comparison of the outcome of American “Manifest Destiny” through a book by one of my favorite Authors Tolkien in his book ‘The Hobbit’. Its a conversation between Bilbo Baggins, & Gollum in the chapter ‘Riddle’s in the Dark’.
Bilbo ask Gollum to answer his Riddle.
*Thirty white horses on a red hill. First they champ, then they stamp, then they stand still*
So the thirty White Horses represent White Men of Power(Horsepower, Violence). On the ‘Red Hill’ represents White Colonial Conquest of the First Nations people, it’s the obviousness or “Pride” of White Bigotry and staunch racist and segregationist beliefs, conquerer ethos. The term “Reds” a white colonist term used to separate first Nations people as evil, red savages, red skins. So the ‘Red Hill’ represents the brutal genocidal slaughter of First Nations People, their “Red Skin” their very bodies and their blood represent the “Red Hill” of which the 30 White Horseback Riding Racists took.
‘Champ’ in my interpretation means to eat. So we know historically that without help from the First Nations peoples most settlers-invaders wouldn’t have survived their first winter. So the whites filled their months and bellies with the kindness of the First Peoples knowledge.
‘Stamp’ well this represents crushing or Utterly Destroying & Murdering the very People who helped these whites survive those first Winters.
‘Stand Still’ means that after killing and raping these beautiful people, the very fertile land, nourished by the blood of true humans, beings with strong unpolluted loving hearts, flows red through the rivers, creeks & streams of this beautiful land. The sunsets of the 1840’s 50’s, 60’s up and into today are colored by decades of evil. The fires set upon the surrounding hills are not ignited by beings of the Earth, they are ignited by a ravenous parasitic enfless hunger for dominance and control! To “Tame” the Wilderness is to Kill and destroy it utterly! The Frontier of Being is painted by the fell hand of Doom, centuries of viciousness, hatred, and ignorance.
‘Stands Still’ this is the result of the way of the Pioneer White man. To live & die friendless, alone, & with no hope for salvation upon the Horizon! he now stands upon the murdered heart of the Earth,..alone, a destroyer of Truth.
The above Analysis is a brief thesis summarization. The long form Thesis, written by Dr. Jonathan D. Guske for his Masters degree in 1992, can be found by calling 8675309. Winners are losers in tacky outfits.
    Shutta uppa youra face!
