It’s been established that he’s been friends with the family since college. He’s Rosses college roommate. As the series goes on, you’ll hear more stories of their college days.
Ross lost his apartment and Emily's cousin kicked him out, so that's the eviction, and yes Chandler and Ross were roommates in college(Chandler actually said this in season 1 when he accidentally revealed that Ross was in love with Rachel "Remember back in collage when Ross bought carol that expensive Cristal duck?") and Monica and Rachel know each other since the high school days so the 4 Know each other since early on, only Phoebe and Joey who came to the friends group later
But they did know Chandler and Ross were roommates in college, did I miss a timestamp? At the end Cody was talking about Monica and Chandler not Ross and Chandler
Joshua Duvall Preston, who played Young Chandler, looked uncannily like Matthew Perry, and he didn't even have to utter a single word. Talk about a casting jackpot.
It is believable that Monica would have known Chandler about as long as Ross, because the 2 guys were roommates at college. But the writers DID change the moment when Rachel first met Chandler. In the pilot episode, Rachel is introduced to Chandler and Monica says "You remember my brother Ross?", so she doesn't say "Do you remember my brother's friend Chandler?" Yet, in these flashbacks (spoiler: there are more to come), Rachel also knew Chandler from the time she and Monica were still in High school and she got to meet him at the Geller's.
They’ve been talking about their friendship since college, right from the start of the series, but you might have missed that since it's your first time watching. Their bond goes way back, so it makes sense that Ross' family would know Chandler as well. As for Chandler and Monica, it wasn’t that they were deeply into each other initially. Chandler was the “cool older guy” - you know, the type that every girl might have a crush on at some point, but once you get to know him, that crush fades away, haha. And for Chandler, well, Monica, his friend's little sister, suddenly grew up and became attractive, so, he was drawn to her in a way. But once they became actual friends, those feelings faded too. That said, there’s been undeniable sexual tension between them from the start, and we've seen plenty of foreshadowing from the beginning of the series
yes i point this out all the time even if they weren't planning it from the start they did a great job of showing how great courtney cox and matthew perrys chemistry really was but that's why i was shocked to find out they planned it based on audience reaction to when they slept together, because i saw moments they had way before that episode way before that season
Chandlers I love you to Monica makes me so happy. It’s even better when you realize how hard it is for chandler to even say it, making it all the more special he says it first to Monica.
And prompted by a very difficult thing by Monica: she has ocd especially towards cleaning and organizing, how difficult was for her to stuck her head and hair in a dead animal? But for love... they're so perfect
Uh Emily’s cousin kicked Ross out. That’s why he moved in with Joey and Chandler and Chandler and Monica knew each other from college. Rachel and Ross too. You forgot about it
It wasnt explicit that Chandler knew Monica and Rachel when he was in college but they did mention about him and Ross going to collage together in season 1 so u can see that the only way Chandler would've known Monica was because of being romates with Ross, but you guys are right about some stories being rewritten, because the 1st episode of the show when Rachel shows up at the coffee house for the 1st time, Monica introduces her to everyone (including Chandler even tho they knew each other back then) except for Ross "do u remember my brother Ross?", also in season 2 the prom videotape, shows Monica fat and Chandler looks so shocked and weirded out by seeing her fat if was the 1st time he's ever saw her fat or didnt know she was fat(???), and it shows Ross playing keyboard and talking about his music/working on his band, and Chandler makes a joke about it if he didnt know about it even tho they were rommates and even wrote songs together.... Yeah they rewrote some stuffs
Rachel back then had short-term memory loss when it came to people. I could easily forget a friend-of-a-friend-of-a-neighbor I met only twice years ago, as could Monica easily forget that the meetings had happened.
Plus Monica, Rachel & Joey did say in season 1 ,I think that they all thought Chandler was gay the first time they met him. So they definitely rewrite the stuff. Their birthdays all jumbled up & their first-time meeting with each other was changed so many times. They didn't really care to keep track of the timelines in 90s sitcoms.
It definitely was kind of back peddled in terms of Chandler and Monica. You are right Nick that they were established as not being romantic before, but it’s still sweet just seeing the writers add it in.
I'm sure it's been explained but the story behind the toe was originally written to explain why Chandler (or rather Matthew Perry) missing part of his finger. But for some reason they decided to make it his toe instead (i want to say it was because it would be less graphic that way)
This episode cemented my status has a diehard Mondler supporter. Also, despite Chandler heavily disliking Thanksgiving, many of the Happiest moments of his life took place around that holiday.
As much as you're right that they retconned the story a bit, I have to admit that they stayed true to their characters: Monica being motivated to lose weight to take revenge on a guy makes sense. The competition was always there.
11:51 My mother-in-law bought me "The Friends Cookbook" and this year for Thanksgiving my husband made the "Righteous Mac and Cheese" recipe and loved it!
@nickflix8657 So glad that you saw this episode. By the way I wanted to ask you this. After your 25 days of Friends, can you react to Sesame Street presents, Follow That Bird when 25 days is over. It is one of my favorite childhood movies
Top 2 best Thanksgiving episodes and in my top 10 of the series. (Friends was created by a woman and a gay-presenting man, but there are a lot of dated and one-note aspects with how they presented queerness. It seems everything that wasn’t “gender normal” and “straight” was just assured to get some laughs in the 90s).
Juvenile and basic gay/sissy jokes never went away in real life or the internet. They just became less abundant in mass entertainment. I don’t expect them to become omnipresent in entertainment again. There’s just too many out writers/producers/actors nowadays, and those jokes mostly seem dated. Friends depended on a gay panic joke almost every episode.
It is kinda weird no one would mention Chandler’s foot. I’m not totally sure but I think the writers kind of added that in, because it definitely would have come up with the three nipple thing.
@ChrissaTodd Of course he remembered it. He just didn't know the reason WHY Monica was playing with the knife (i.e. to get back at him for calling her fat.)
They have mentioned before that Chandler was Ross’ college roommate so its not crazy he knew Monica. They weren’t friends until after so its not really a re-write, its just adding lore to a gap that was already there
also it may feel retconned because it was the audience who decided mondler should stay together, but i kind of believe that monica may have had a crush but not like her attraction to him now is more like when your sibling has a hot friend crush and that's why it got to her that he called her fat they probably also wanted to show us a reason she lost all the weight so they made this reason
It was said in a previous episode (the one where Ross and Rachel officially got together after watching the Prom video) that Rachel had a deviated septum.
Mathew Perry is actually missing a finger tip. There’s only a few scenes you can catch a glimpse once you know to look for it. That’s why he keeps his hand in his pocket a lot.
I may be wrong, but... Technically, Rachel & Chandler actually have met "for the first time" 3 times! : The Pilot, The One with the Flashback (S 3, Ep. 6), and this one: S 5, Ep. 8: The One with the Thanksgiving Flashbacks. And I get it, the pilot was you know, the pilot, and as time went on they needed backstories and character development, etc... watching once a week back when it was on TV I guess made you not notice it!
Yeah, its just the tip of his toe. Actually Matthew Perrry was missing the tip of one of his fingers from an accident as a child. If you really pay attention you may notice it in the show, but it's not really that noticeable. The tip of a toe would be even less noticeable. And yes, it has been established that Monica has known Chandler since he was in college with Ross. What is a re write is that Rachel had met Chandler on multiple occasions, considering in the first episode Monica introduced them as if they'd never met. Also, I don't think Monica was especially "into" Chandler in that first flashback. She was just a high school girl meeting her older brothers older friend. She was shown to be pretty naive when she was younger, and inexperienced with boys, so she was just kind being awkward flirty.
Lots of people keep assuming Cody forgot about Chandler and Ross being college roommates but he was talking about Chandler and Monica. Think they both knew Ross and Chandler were roommates.
Come on, Phoebe pyrotechnics! Twice! Flashback retcons! Runway fashion police lookbacks! Fat Monica!***Chandler voice*** Whatya want? This one has everything! 😅
I can’t remember, did they ever explain why Chandler happened to live across the hall from Monica? I guess we could assume he found the place through Monica, but I can’t remember if they ever mention it.
Hold up in 5 seasons yall didnt know Chandler and Ross were college roommates even after the whole best man episode its normal for Monica to have met him through Ross lol but they were barely anything she liked him until he called her fat then he started to find her attractive after she lost weight but they just remained friends. also, literally in the last episode Ross says he got evicted from Emily's cousins apartment that he was subletting cause of their divorce 😂😂lmao its ok that yall forgot im just shocked
I think people may be misinterpreting what they didn’t know. They knew Ross and Chandler were roommates in college, Cody was referring to Monica and Chandler, not Ross and Chandler.
@youknownothingjonsnow1842 lol I know i figured that lol but even then I still wonder how they wouldn't have thought they knew each other from early days of Ross meeting him as his roommate cause don't most family members meet their child's roommates in college and with how involved the Gellers are as parents especially with Ross and how close Monica is with him too idk i just thought that would've been more of "Oh OK that makes sense" rather than the confusion lol tho Idk maybe it's me cause me and my brother even tho 5 years apart I knew his roommates he knew mine so I assumed it was a common thing
Chandler's hair is copying the lead singer in Flock of Seagulls, an 80's band who had videos in heavy rotation on Mtv.
