First, THANK YOU! I am a hard core handyman and found myself not figuring out the clunk in my Toyota Avalon 2009. Found this video and read the comments (usually the most valuable part as usual). I DID NOT take mine apart at all. I just sprayed wd40 dry lubricant (all I had) and in 20 seconds DONE. It makes no creaking or clunking. HUGE thank you the commenters bellow that had two people do this without taking it apart.
Thank you Randy! I put up with this issue for 90K miles to avoid the $600 cost to fix it. The constant road noise, vibration, and clanking of the steering wheel became unbearable and I hated driving the car (2007 Camry XLE.) Also, there was a knocking noise through the steering wheel when braking. After watching this video I picked up a tube of white lithium grease from Lowe's for $5 and went home to apply the fix. After aligning the wheel, so the bolt underneat was accessible, I secured the steering wheel (in my case duct tape.) That way I didn't have to worry about alignment issues later, even though I did mark the parts as a precaution. After that, I simply removed the bolt at the buckle to free the shaft. I worked as much grease into all sides of the shaft spine as possible while moving it in and out about 20 times. Reassembled, wiped away the excess grease, and test drove the car. WOW, what a difference! Next time this will be a 5 minute job instead of 10. No need to remove the rubber boot or take further action as Randy mentions. So easy to do!
Thanks so much Randy for sharing, I tried this on my 2011 Camry with the annoying steering shaft noise. I sprayed CRC white lithium grease on the shaft spline and move it up and down for several times and it really works as shown in your video. Now I'm back driving with ease without the annoying noise, just spending a merely four bucks for the white lithium grease.
thank you so much for the video! I didn't even have to take mine out, i just sprayed the white lithium directly on the groove, let it sat there for few minutes, then turn the wheel left and right. The noise seem to have disappeared completely.
Thanks boss! Just sprayed the white grease on them grooves, and it seems to make the difference. I will take it apart under the steering wheel and fully lubricate it on the weekend. Just saved me $1000 that dealer was asking me to replace the whole thing...suckers!
My cars steering wheel would give me a little knock everytime I turned back and fourth. It felt like my steering wheel was loose. This 100 percent fixed my problem. I am so happy. I have had this problem for 6 months. Thanks a lot!!!
2009 Lexus ES 350. Had the same clunking on acceleration and braking, but not on steering. Fixed the issue by spraying white lithium grease through the groove. At first, it didn't look like any grease is going through the groove, but then it actually fixed the problem. Thanks!
Quick comment. Had this issue for years. Bought WD-40 Lithium spray. Took about two minutes to squirt it in there. Has been fine now for 6 months. Instantly fixed issue. Thanks for the video.
I just want to say thank you so much, that's worked and clicking and clunking sound are gone. ( I used white lithium grease and I marked the part to reinstall and that's really helpful) Toyota camry hybrid xle 2013 ( Toyota dealer said it will cost 700 dollars ) I need to say before doing this I checked every joints and boots, they were in the good shape and no licking and that was only things I didn't think about it, you are the best . 02/08/2019
Hi dan. I don't think so. Turning the wheel while apart is mechanical and has nothing to do with the other stuff. It's a splined shaft so it's completely separate. I don't know how the other stuff hooks up but if your steering wheel is straight after it was worked on I doubt that's an issue. My guess is a wire plug somewhere
Great tutorial, I have a Toyota Auris 2010 im going to try this but how would greasing stop a clunking sound? Someone else said the pinch bolt stretches because it’s not a high tensile bolt, he replaced it with a high tensile bolt and stopped the left to right clunking sound! Anyway I’ll try both, thanks Randy.
Yeah, my dealer wanted to replace the entire steering column for $1800, but I got under there to confirm it is just the dry splines. I was afraid to pull the shaft out fearing I would never get both ends lined up again...But, it looks like the lower splines can only fit one way into the steering box, am I correct? Will definitely mark the column end of the intermediate shaft though. Did you notice any wear on the splines, just was wondering if the intermediate shaft should be replaced if there is wear....
kramden Just get it greased up. Don’t have to pull it completely off Just mark it so the steering wheel won’t be off. Tie the wheel from turning. Or make sure the steering wheel locks. What happens is when they come apart the steering wheel turns until it locks. Just mark it. Put grease on and you should be good.
Hi Randy Wilson, This part the you are working in the video, How it is called?? That goes thrue the firewall, It usually has a kind of ruber bushing inside, do you know the name of it?? I really will appreciate it.
There is a rubber cover over mine but you don't need to get into that. It is the splines of the shaft from the steering wheel that go into that part. Looking below some people just sprayed white grease on the grooves and it worked. if you can spray it into the splines i'm sure it would work. Don't have to mess with that rubber boot or anything inside it. hope that helps
Look and see which it is closer too. I did a 2009 Camry on a different video. The 2009 you can get it apart and get grease on the splines. 2009 steering shaft should find it I think
I got a 09 Camry hybrid and had this clunking noise for about a year, sprayed WD-40 on it and it was good as new, every few months tho it would go back to its clunking noise and I’d just respray it and problem solved. Last night however it felt like my powersteering was shot completely, I sprayed WD-40 like usual as I have been doing for 9 months and it did fix the clunking but this time around the wheel won’t turn back to straight. It’s very stiff and won’t turn and not sure if it’s the same issue or a new one arised? If anyone knows please let me know!
Hi, does this apply to problems when going left or right and the steering wheel is stiff, a bit difficult to turn and making squeaking noise? Thanks so much
please you can make a more specific video , like this lubricated . I 'm going crazy with this sound in my 09 camry It sounds like it's something loose .
Carlos Tintin Yes its the lubrication. Get some white grease and put it on those splines. The knocking noise is the small amount of 'slop' or space between the splines. You need the white grease on those splines and the noise will go away.
Cerveza Torres I’m sure it’s what I said on the video. Doesn’t seem like it could make that noise but it does. Get grease on those splines and it should go away
Since this comment and doing grease has got worse since then I believe mines from not having grease in for so long the damaged had been done so the splines are worn so matter how much grease you stick in there it’s still going to have play at-least in my scenario I can’t deal with it anymore it messes with steering on the car like there no center point when driving on the steering wheel due to the splines being worn very annoying on highway as you can’t keep it straight so I’ve read some forum online and others who had this issue with there Toyota bought 2 piece shaft collar which clamps on the part you insert the grease it being a 2 piece it can hopefully pinch the circle theoretically bending it a little to just enough in oval shape kinda to keep it from having any play at this point I have nothing to loose but $13 for the collar will update if this worked. Dealer ship says it’s not this and it’s my rack pion but that’s bs you can see it clunking n moving around inside where u put grease.
If i do this, how much do i lift it up? (Is there a risk of lifting it completely off and then not being able to put it the right way back in?) I have a 92 toyota previa with this issue.
V4 Garage Good question. I can't remember. I didn't have it come off but don't remember how far I pulled it out I'm thinking it stopped and didn't come out but not sure. It's splines so if it did come out it would go right back in. Make a mark on both sides so you can be sure to put it back together right. If you get it on a different spline the steering wheel will be a little crooked is all. I have 110k Miles now and still no noise
I'm sure you can, but white grease is easy to get and that is what Toyota had been doing. Yes it stops the clunking by filling in the 'slop' between the splines.

@@randywilson6816 yeah and thank you for emphazing the importance of marking the splines. Saved me a huge headache
Great!! Glad I could help.

awesome!!! glad it helped! Its crazy the cost they say to fix this when it is such a big deal on so many of their cars.
Mostafa Keramati is it still clunk free? My 2015 Scion tC just started making this same noise.
Nice! I just fixed my 09 Camry clunking noise.
Have a 2009 Camry with 80000km and the steering has a chatter noise when driving on rough surfaces... Very informative, thanks!
Thanks for the video! Great 10 min. fix to what seemed a worse problem than I thought.
Thank you. I've done this procedure. And it's working perfectly
Thanks for the video. I successfully lubricated 2005 Toyota Highlander with a little play when turn and on bump.
Thank you so much , useful video , I wasn't thinking that this part is here and open , I thought it's covered and not accessible

Sienna, Rav 4, Sienna, and may be Corolla has the same problems too. It is just bad supplier in 2004-2010 Toyota
Just sprayed there K7 (same stuff as WD40). No need to take anything apart.
I HAD PROBLEM WITH STEERING- SIMPLY SPRAYING W2-40 ON U JOUNT OF STEERING COLUMN FIX STIFF AND NOISY WHEEL- 5 MINUTS-$5 FIX

I believe it was slow turning and it would make the noise. Been too long I don't remember. But still no noise yet

Nowhere in this video did you demonstrate the noise.
if you have steering clunking noise when turning, this is the problem more than likely
Does this apply to a 2010 toyota camry hybrid, too?
Look and see which it is closer too. I did a 2009 Camry on a different video. The 2009 you can get it apart and get grease on the splines. 2009 steering shaft should find it I think

Sorry don’t know that issue. Good luck
im having the same problem with my nissan maxima 2011.
will liquid white lithium grease work? or penetrate without having to pull out the chaft
Check out the problems for Corolla/Matrix and Pontiac Vibe (same car) Toyota admitted the defect. but Pontiac (GM)... NOPE
any time that your steering wheel is not aligned, go to a certified mechanic and he can lower the rack and align the steering wheel.
Hi, does this apply to problems when going left or right and the steering wheel is stiff, a bit difficult to turn and making squeaking noise? Thanks so much
Hi it might help some but mainly I think just the noise that they start making when turning
@@randywilson6816 Oh okay, my problem-whatever it is-must be more involved. Thank so much for responding.

My 09 Camry has that clunk but it sounds like it's right below the steering wheel in the steering column
Cerveza Torres I’m sure it’s what I said on the video. Doesn’t seem like it could make that noise but it does. Get grease on those splines and it should go away
I have a 2007 and I tried this unfortunately it’s the top steering shaft and not the bottom one wheel making a loud clicks
Don’t know what to say but this has fixed the problem on every car so far. Good luck and let me know the fix

hi i tried to pull out shaft but it only partly comping not all. should i have to remove shaft out of that ring hole or not please reply.
I'm sure you got it out far enough. Get the white grease on the splines really good and I think it will work Good luck.
Will this work on Corolla XRS 2010?
How difficult was it to slide out the shaft and back in so that you can get to the grooves to be greased
It slides right out. Sorry I didn't respond sooner. Be Careful not to let the steering wheel turn as I stated, just mark it
If i do this, how much do i lift it up? (Is there a risk of lifting it completely off and then not being able to put it the right way back in?) I have a 92 toyota previa with this issue.
V4 Garage Good question. I can't remember. I didn't have it come off but don't remember how far I pulled it out I'm thinking it stopped and didn't come out but not sure. If you get it on a different spline the steering wheel will be a little crooked is all. I have 110k Miles now and still no noise
can i use other lubricants?
general grease, moly or thermo paste.
i didn't know lubrication can stop the clunking
I'm sure you can, but white grease is easy to get and that is what Toyota had been doing. Yes it stops the clunking by filling in the 'slop' between the splines.
thx i will take your advice and try it.
I did this and the problem gone , but the steering is not straight when I drive , what's happened for it ?
You are off one spline or two. That was what the marker was for so you can make sure you have it lined back up. You are just off one spline probably.
Randy Wilson yeah I didn't mark a point , so how this can be fixed ?
Pull it back off and move it one spline
But if you could record the lubrication it'll be better also
