The Bryz contract was awful but the real travesty was the Flyers front office trading away a young Sergei Bobrovsky for pennies. You know, the future 2 time Vezina trophy winner. Flyers had their own home-developed goalie of the future but instead have him away.
Blame ownership for that one. For as incredible and important as guys Ed Snider and Bobby Clarke have been for the Flyers' history as a whole - and to be clear this organization isn't what it is without them - how many times have their own personal biases cost this team a realistic chance at the cup since '75? Even when they weren't in 'official' positions of power its not hard to see the moves in Homer or Hexy's times that had their fingerprints all over them. Not drafting Jagr because Ed didn't trust anyone coming out of a country East of Germany. Clarke's refusal to properly invest in a goalie during his tenure in management (which looks especially bad if you factor in the rumors that he always hated how much credit Parent 'took' from him with regards to the '74 and '75 cups) not to mention his mostly personal feud with the Lindros family that literally almost killed Eric in Nashville. Refusal to teardown and rebuild properly around Giroux, leading up to the Bob trade that basically everyone at the time attributed to ownership more than management because it fit their bill
As Flyers fan it wasn't gonna work with Bobcat. Our Management and him couldn't see eye to eye because of the bryz situation. Once we signed bryz I knew we were in for trouble
I wouldn’t call him poor! His brain is bigger and it was his fiercest obstacle…. Besides the press, his teammates and Homer when he was in the front office. He is an entertaining (and wealthy) guy though

Great video!! Five stars!! You are talking about a big secret which the NHL media won't talk about. You won't see Ron McLean or his Hockey Night talking heads discussing this subject, or anyone else because it would get them in a lot of trouble. You can add a new name to your list: Elias Petterson of Vancouver Canucks. He's got his huge contract, he's in the big money, and now his entire game has gone downhill. He's playing it safe, he avoids getting hit, and he's just showing up every night because he has to. The loyal fans deserve a lot more!
That’s one of the reasons why we’re not worried about losing Larsson here in Edmonton. Man had a great season and was one of the best defensive D-men of the year. If he had played liked that his whole career, the Hall-Larsson trade would have been okay. But that’s: the issue. The only time he had this kind of year in the NHL is when it was a contract year. Glad we avoided that bullet, because we took the Barrie one (I should say that I would’ve liked to have Larsson back, but there was no way he was gonna perform like that again until his next career year).
Bryzgalov is my favorite Russian player of all time he played well in the 06 playoffs and won a Stanley Cup a year later didn't have the best time in Philly but I blame the media for criticizing him so much
Cursed doesn’t even begin to describe Matt duchene. I’ve been an Avs fan, and more importantly a hockey fan and player my whole life. I’ve NEVER in my LIFE, seen someone hit more posts, or get robbed more times, or miss more sure goals, than Matt duchene. It was like a fucking comedy show, every single night this dude would have at least 1 usually multiple points taken away by an absolute act of god. I don’t know what he did or who he pissed off in a past life but the shit was ridiculous.
Dude, You missed Jeff Skinner! lol Averaging roughly 40-60 points in 9 season being a consistent goal scorer, even posting 40 goals in his contract year he was becoming a closely watch player of mine, landing a 8 year $72,000,000 9 mill AAV! Now down to 23 and 14 points in the last two seasons with Buffalo! OOF! Bad luck for Buffalo. Not even sure you can blame Buffalo, I don't think they changed much that season, it was just him.. lol
The old coach also tried to ruin his career by putting on the 4th line and scratching him. Even though he was still one of the best players on the team.
If you want bad contracts in the future, keep an eye on the D in NJ. Subban and Hamilton have insane amounts of money invested in their play and if that team doesn't improve in a hurry, they'll both be targets by fans and media alike.
He kinda deserves it but damn that would be crushing going through all that to finally leave only to go to a team who ended up worse, and watching your former club raise the cup a year later lol
You should do a story on coaches and general managers and owners of teams and how much money they make and look at some of the things they’ve done to not only hurt the team but in some instances help other teams it’s easy to pick out a player who has a very very little control of his environment anyone who plays for Montreal or Toronto 95% of what happens around them they have zero control of it I played juniors in Quebec Montreal and Toronto and I come from New York City and it was absolutely amazing the bullshit that is said and done and I’m only talking low level junior player
The main reason that Vegas and Seattle have had so much success is that they start out with no superstars, but 4 solid lines filled with players who would be 2nd or 3rd liners at best on other teams. That also means that they don't burn a huge percentage of the salary cap on a handful of players...the point being that they have depth instead of top-end talent. IMO, Vegas winning is a *GREAT* thing for hockey, because it shows that the way to win is to build a team that is solid from top-to-bottom...in other words an actual *TEAM*...rather than paying a few players ridiculous amounts of money and filling the rest of your lineup with marginal talent.
Loui did not forget how to score goals. I'm sure he was one of the top scoring Canucks...when there was an empty net facing him. He always seemed to score the EN goals.

Im not even thinking about a long term contract for you. Ill maybe give you aav but certainly not term
Bryzgalov's NHL SV% went from .920 in 2009-2010 to .921. .909, .900, .910, and finally .847 in 2014-2015. So he really only dropped off drastically in the last season. The y-axis is not to scale at all.

Flyers are the most goalie snake bitten organization in NHL. The hilarity of the Bryz disaster is they had Bobrovsky and traded him after the Bryz signing and Bobs wins the Vezina the very next season and twice in the next 4🤦♂️
part of the issue with Bryz is that he had a really tough defense in front of him in Arizona, but the Flyers D was often terrible through those years . . and before those years . . . and since then . . .
Duchene has had 2 great years in total in the NHL. Other than that he's just another decent first line guy. He's not elite, and $8mil was bonkers. He should've been on some 6x6 shit, not 8. 8 was insane considering it's not like he's winning the selke or putting guys through the glass.
@@jasondashney What do you expect? It's fucking David Poile. He gave Shea Weber a 14 year, $65 million deal just to keep him from going to Philly, then traded him to Montreal for P.K. Nashville's biggest problem is David Poile's boneheaded decisions and now he's about to let Filip Forsberg, the teams all- time leading scorer, go to Free Agency. I get Bryz had a terrible contract but who was really furious about it, i'd pay that much to have him on my team tbh
That's the idiocy of Paul Holmgren. I'm amazed he stayed on as long as he did.
Nooooo, the Benning face is gone
You should rank the top ten worst contracts in the history of the NHL. I'll get you started. Number 1: Rick Dipietro
Number 2: Ilya Kovalchuck
The only reason Alzner was thought to be good was because the Caps defense was and still is their biggest weakness ..
Brzgalov is amazing
Flyers are the most goalie snake bitten organization in NHL. The hilarity of the Bryz disaster is they had Bobrovsky and traded him after the Bryz signing and Bobs wins the Vezina the very next season and twice in the next 4🤦♂️
Paying players after their contract year where it's an outlier is just stupid
Andrew Ladd should get Honorable mention
Still a tad bit early, but Bobrovski.
part of the issue with Bryz is that he had a really tough defense in front of him in Arizona, but the Flyers D was often terrible through those years . . and before those years . . . and since then . . .
Matt puts the "Douche" in Duchene
Duchene has had 2 great years in total in the NHL. Other than that he's just another decent first line guy. He's not elite, and $8mil was bonkers. He should've been on some 6x6 shit, not 8. 8 was insane considering it's not like he's winning the selke or putting guys through the glass.
@@jasondashney What do you expect? It's fucking David Poile. He gave Shea Weber a 14 year, $65 million deal just to keep him from going to Philly, then traded him to Montreal for P.K. Subban less than two years into that deal. Nashville's biggest problem is David Poile's boneheaded decisions and now he's about to let Filip Forsberg, the teams all- time leading scorer, go to Free Agency. He would've been out on his ass years ago if he was the GM of any other team in the NHL. I could go on and on about the stupid decisions he has made that have cost the Preds.
@@emperorpalpatine1228 He makes boneheaded moves, but his teams perform and that's the bottom line. He never drafts crazy high yet his teams are pretty good year in and year out so that's gotta count for something. If you think he's bad, I'm an Edmonton fan and dealt with Peter Chiarelli. Also, he did resign Forsberg so there's that.
Do i get a 6x6 contract??! Nice time to score no goals
So bascily Matt duchene is the James harden of hockey :P
