Actually, the rule is there to protect the players. So if you want to be allowed to keep playing, you must have a helmet, so you better make sure it is properly fastened when you step on the ice. Otherwise, you must leave. As for the comparison with rugby, it doesn’t even make any sense at all. Rugby is played on grass, with hardly any equipment other than cleats, whilst hockey is played on a thick layer of ice with a frozen puck, 5 feet + long sticks, razor-sharp skates (32 skates on the ice at all time, including the refs) and hard as hell pieces of equipment (shoulder pads, elbow pads, etc). I remember watching "The Broad Street Bullies" documentary and there it mentioned that Flyers alone forced a lot of rule changes back in the 70's. Could you do a rundown on what was actually codified back then?
I remember hearing about that. the 70s was a bit before my time, but my dad used to tell me about the infamous bench clearing brawls the Flyers would cause every game just about. The entire team directly caused rules about players on the bench leaving the bench to participate in a fight rules, 3rd man in rules, and instagator rules were all added/changed/strictly enforced as a result of that crap to get that mindless goonery out of the game. In the next decade, the Edmonton Oilers also triggered some rule changes as they took advantage of rules to score insane amounts of goals. The 2 line pass rule, the no 4 on 4 for offsetting penalties rule and a few others were all invented to curtail the Oiler's blowout wins.

He says that there was no helmet rule changes until 2019 but i think it was in 2012 that the NHL made a rule about wearing no visor on the helmet that was similar to the helmet rule.
Not a rule change, but a tidbit about another good stickhandler goalie: Jarmo Myllys was an insanely good stick handler. When he played in the Swedish league, he wanted to do a shootout, but wasn't allowed. Speaks volumes. He was in Minnesota North Stars and San Jose Sharks in late 80's-early 90's. Never made a big break overseas, but an absolute legend in Finland (WC95 goalie, instant legend status in Finnish minds) and played long in Sweden as well. Just... I think it's enough to restrict the goalie to their own end of the ice, but the trapezoid is just ridiculous.
The rule change that needs to happen is in regards to penalties. During normal play a penalty will carry over from first to second, second to third, even third to overtime. BUT it does not carry over into the shoot out. It needs to. If you take a penalty in the last 1:59 of the overtime period that player should be ineligible for the shoot out. Seen a couple times where key players took a penalty in the last second of the OT and then proceeded to go into the shootout lineup. No repercussions for the penalty other than added to the list.
You forgot the Jean Béliveau rule,in the past during a 2 minutes penality, the player had to stay in the penality box for 2 minutes, even if the other team score more than a goal during the penality, they change that, the day Béliveau scores 3 goals during a minor penality...
Patrick Roy blew a fuse once in a game vs the rangers, deked Gretzky and did a spin-o-rama to deke another player, then drew a penalty because he crossed the red line. Should have included that clip because it's hilarious.
Yep! Thought that's why Rob showed his picture. For those that don't know: Stamkos broke it on a PP one-timer and threw it underhand behind him. Just happened to go over the glass. Super flukey play. But a penalty.

Love your vids, keep em coming. I think the trapezoid should be abolished. It’s stupid that goalies are restricted from being so darn good at shooting a puck. Many times I see one play in the forbidden zone and not get called anyways, so why have it?
its still so absurd to think people didnt have helmets back in the day and goalies had those wooden hockey masks on but nothing to cover the back of their head, so insane
How about Gretzky effecting the actual distance the goal line is placed from the end boards due to his behind the net set up mastery on a regular basis. And Gretzky rule #2: No more 4 on 4 for coincidental minors. Wow, that's 2 major rule changes by one player!
A minor penalty turns to a major if there is an injury on the play. Pavs head was cracked open. And he was out for the rest of the playoffs. There was blood on the ice that’s why there was a major penalty

The “no water thing” was pretty common back then. Even when I was a kid in the early 80s coaches would get mad if you got a drink during a game/practice even in things like baseball. Dumb as hell, but common. Football was the worst. You’d have coaches who wouldn’t allow ANY water during several hour practices.
So, let me get this straight. The NHL penalizes a player who does not retrieve his helmet as soon as practicable or goes to the bench. But they have nothing to say about another player deliberately ripping the helmet off a another player. Seems legit.

Goldeneye music might be one of the most nostalgic tracks ever, depending on your age.
I'm a native guy living in Canada and I love the fact u have the "ECM" shirt in the background.
Hey rob, love the awesome videos. Could you do video of the best player in the chl. The whl, ohl, and qmjhl but you can’t use 1 player for more than 1 team.
Love the effort Rob. As a beginning RUclipsr I never knew the work that goes into it. Yt can suck it for Shadow ban shite.
Thanks Tom!
this is the 1st video or yours I've seen and its very good, have subscribed now. keep it up and you're doing a awesome job.
I remember Marc Savard threw his stick into the crowd when he scored the overtime winner in Game 1 of the 2nd round against Philly in 2010. I thought it was an awesome celebration the way he did it but I didn’t hear anyone talk about him throwing the stick into the crowd. I knew you couldn’t do what Sundin did but it’s weird that nothing came from Savard doing it. As a Bs fan I’m glad but I still wonder why no one said anything about it.
Best hockey RUclips channel
I love that Orange shirt you have in the background. Nothing but love respect 👊 from Alberta Canada
1:43 that iconic photo is between tory crug and Robert Tomas in the 2019 Stanley cup finals. Now to why it's relevant, there teammates now. I find it funny.
Great vid 👍
Do a series on the craziest incidents/situations/trades/goals/etc. for every team. That would give you plenty of content if you did each team. For example the first Blues stat was a fight because that player knew it was his only way of being in the record books for the team. He started it for no reason. Lol
I love the shirt in the background. Also love your videos!
0:58 depends what you mean by impale, because the stick would barely crack the surface of your skin. Worst case the fiber glass shards will dig in a little bit, but yeah it was unsafe for Sundin to do that
True. But I have been slashed back in the day with a partially broken stick. And my god, does fiberglass hurt
@@RobTalksHockey Yeah that'd be up there with the most stingy types of pain, luckily I've never been slashed but I can sort of imagine it. If the fiberglass punctures you, it'd be alot worse then digging out a wood splinter. My most painful stick experience is when my stick caught a rut in the ice and speared my own ribcage as I was skating full speed.
I'm a goalie and thing of the water bottle is so funny and dumb. As a goalie, i really need my water
True! at what level do you play?
@@Lanwarder Midget AA (right behind AAA🥲)
I know the sharks thing absolutely ruined the knights playoff and was a screw up by a ref but, that was one of the most electric come backs in recent history.
Little side Note, Vegas chocked an easy 3-1 Series lead. So in the end Vegas are in reality to blame more than the refs
Awesome video again rob
12/23/1979 - "a player shall no longer be permitted to enter the stands, wrestle a spectator to the ground, remove the fan's shoe and strike him repeatedly with the shoe." -rule change enacted on account of Mike Milbury's actions.
That was against the Rangers at MSG.
I got here looking for info on the “kicking motion to score a goal with your skate is disallowed” rule. Did a skate to someone’s throat start this rule?
Hey man Idk if you'll see this or not love the videos btw. Just wanted to say nice touch with the orange shirt it's really nice to see you have it up!!
He says that there was no helmet rule changes until 2019 but i think it was in 2012 that the NHL made a rule about wearing no visor on the helmet that was similar to the helmet rule.
Love the golden eye background music in beginning!!
Thanks for the video. Very informative. Like the 👕 too!
Keep it up Rob!!!!
Love your videos rob
great channel. Subscribed.
You forgot the Jean Béliveau rule,in the past during a 2 minutes penality, the player had to stay in the penality box for 2 minutes, even if the other team score more than a goal during the penality, they change that, the day Béliveau scores 3 goals during a minor penality...
I like the fact that Krug is on the Blues now
fav rule changer is Sean Avery that was one of the funniest moments as a ranger fan
As a devils fan I hate him but that was so funny
@@mclovin7079 i feel totally biased loving him bc everyone else hates him and i would too but he was a riot
They couldn't fine a rule for flinging a broken stick into the crowd in frustration??? Unsportsman like conduct???
That was my first thought.
Love the shirt man 🧡🧡🧡
Patrick Roy blew a fuse once in a game vs the rangers, deked Gretzky and did a spin-o-rama to deke another player, then drew a penalty because he crossed the red line. Should have included that clip because it's hilarious.
This series is awesome
Favorite rule change was the introduction of the Cody Eakin rule
Stamkos actually did the same thing i think. by throwing his stick
Yep! Thought that's why Rob showed his picture. For those that don't know: Stamkos broke it on a PP one-timer and threw it underhand behind him. Just happened to go over the glass. Super flukey play. But a penalty.
Got to see it in person!
3:45 that's funny, because David Perron got an assist on Tory Krug's goal last night against the Blackhawks.
Oh how the turn tables
Rth w the subtle flex just casually like “yea I have a career am a full time student and make banger RUclips videos get on my level” 😂😂
my dad never wore a mask he grew up in the 50s he never wore a helmet either he played jr b at the highest level tho and he didnt play goalie in jr b he played forward but as a kid he did play goalie to alot he taught me how to play standup an when being a butterfly was popular i can play both styles because of it there is no standup goalies anymore and hasnt been since the 90s
For your next video you should do ncaa vs chl differences
As someone who is also susceptible to dehydration I am glad they changed the no water rules
It really is lol
The goldeneye background music is 👌
I remember Daniel Alfresson making fun of the stick thing shortly after it happened. Toronto was pissed and Ottawa thought it was hilarious.
Darcy tucker had the best reaction
How about Gretzky effecting the actual distance the goal line is placed from the end boards due to his behind the net set up mastery on a regular basis. And Gretzky rule #2: No more 4 on 4 for coincidental minors. Wow, that's 2 major rule changes by one player!
A minor penalty turns to a major if there is an injury on the play. Pavs head was cracked open. And he was out for the rest of the playoffs. There was blood on the ice that’s why there was a major penalty
My favorite part of the stick throwing is when Alfredsson fakes throwing it makes me laugh every time
Another W video out of curiosity Rob what is your full time career? Also what university do you go to?
The 007 golden eye from N64 background music. Cool man.
And now Krug plays for the Blues. Funny how that works out.
Didn’t stamkos also throw his stick into the crowd kinda like sundin? Or something like that idk
He did, but it was an accident
I’m a goalie and I am like these goalies because I pass the puck and play the puck so much
I just discovered your video are awesome
Thanks dude!
thank you for the t-shirt you have hanging in the background.
The helmet rule is so stupid, fighters can’t take them off any more either. Ruining the game
Yeah screw player safety.
@@HELL5ON 10 minute misconduct for fighters willingly removing their helmets to fight... not sure if you’ve ever seen a true heavy weight fight on ice but they always take off elbow pads and helmets
@@HELL5ON But by keeping them on they have more of a chance of punching a helmet and breaking their hand on it.
Great video
Doug Wilson got into the league just before the helmet rule, and because he had such a long career, he was the only player on the ice without a helmet for years.
Him and Craig MacTavish that played for even longer.
there was atleast one other stick over glass penalty. I cant remeber who it was n=but i remember announcers talking about a minor or misconduct
Marc Savard did the same thing Hughes did in the 2010 playoffs against the Flyers.
That was easily an intent to injure. Why else would you cross check someone off a faceoff?
Haven’t watched one of your videos in quite a while. Man you had me laughing so much. “As if water, is the same thing as a bucket of chicken.” Or like “imagine being a professional athlete and being judged for DRINKING WATER!” Hahahaha also every time you talked about wearing a mask it’s hard to think of like, COVID masks. Imagine being judged for wearing a mask! Lol. Hey man don’t stop with the videos (I mean unless you need to of course.” What I mean is I love these. Sorry I haven’t watched for so long. But I’m gonna go binge some of your other ones tomorrow. You make great content and seem like a solid guy. Just thought I’d let ya know!
Please quit saying "like" when you pause. I enjoy your content, thanks.
That Pavelski incident really shouldn’t have been a major but it didn’t completely derail Vegas’ chance to advance. Letting in 4 goals in 5 minutes because they were short handed isn’t really an excuse.
And they blew a 3-1 series lead as well.
Do the goalie who flipped the goal on a 2 on 0, and got away with a penalty shot that he saved
Let's go rob!
Hey Rob, it’s the Rob Ray rule He had that down to a science 🤛.
So, let me get this straight. The NHL penalizes a player who does not retrieve his helmet as soon as practicable or goes to the bench. But they have nothing to say about another player deliberately ripping the helmet off a another player. Seems legit.
Savard on Boston did what Hughes did I believe it was game 1 where they won in ot it was the year they blew the 3-0 lead to the flyers
The one about the handpass in 2019 blues vs sharks
What about the Sean Avery rule?
to be fair you can never know if the sharks would have come back no one will ever know but as a sjs and vgk fan i think that its definitely possible that if it was a 2 min minor instead they couldve scored swung the momentum and gotten the win
