Great vlog Ruth. I think when we make our own clothes we slowly gain the confidence to try styles and/colours we don’t usually go for because we develop a better eye for styles that work for us. You look beautiful in the red and Frank definitely agrees with this view BTW! I have finally made a foray back into my sewing space… not to sew yet but just stop avoiding it! Stitches are out in my hand so hopefully it won’t be too long before I can have a play on the machine. See you next vlog.
That's great news Julie, hopefully it won't be too long now 🤞 And I think you are right about becoming more confident with colour and style choices although I do still have that inner voice always making their opinions heard 🥰
I think everyone can wear every colour. You just have to find the right red in this case. You really got it right with this dress and I’m off to look at the pattern!
Hi Ruth, your red dress looks fab on you - very elegant. I love the Merchant Mills fabric, it's lovely and will look stunning what ever dress you decide to make.❤
Oh Ruth, you make me smile so much. Red really suits you, the first dress you made looked good too. Your new fabric is lovely, pricey but nice. Wish I could afford it. Thanks for making my day.!!
Hello again ,thanks for your reply about the gingham .I got some which arrive the next day with free shipping and 10% off so thanks for the recommendation I really love the fabric .C U SOON 🥰
You look amazing in red Ruth. I wore it in the past and then when I left work in the City due to illness I got a job with Clarins. It was soon weird. Red was my father's favourite colour. He died in the Aprl and I got a job with Clarins in the same year. RED UNIFORM. I now left since the pandemic and only now getting back into it. Love your Vlogs and your makes. ❤❤😊
Really good video again Ruth. Thank you. Your red dress looks so good on you and I think you have the totally perfected the fit of the Nell. The Merchant and Mills fabric is a really lovely colour combo and will suit your colouring, as will the Merry Maid fabric. Exciting options and I can’t wait to see what you make. Have a good week Ruth 😊xx
You look stunning in that red dress - your last video inspired me, so I have ordered the nell pattern, and some fabric, previously only made quilts, so my first go at making my own clothe s- wish me luck !!! (I've subscribes as well🥰🥰)
Your red Nell looks fabulous on. The black is going to be such a staple too ❤ I’ve recently picked up that flower girl fabric, it’ll look fab in a Nell 🥰 Merrymaid fabrics are based in Nottingham so maybe the name is deliberate 🤔😀
Super video Ruth. The red looks fabulous and really suits you. Your videos are great to chill to. So natural and interesting and relaxing. Looking forward to seeing the check fabric made up.
Ruth the red really suits you and love the Merchant and Mills check fabric. Can you recommend other sewing podcasts that are as good as yours please? I knit and know lots of lovely knitting podcasts but not sewing ones. Winter here in Melbourne, enjoy your summer.
Thank you for such a lovely comment 🥰 There are lots of sewing vloggers out there making brilliant videos. A good place to start is searching for '#fridaysews' I am sure you will find other people who you enjoy listening to xx
Another stimulating vlog thank you Ruth. I know that Tilly’s patterns have never been a great fit for me but I’m soo tempted especially seeing your versions. Shall I shan’t I? I’m fired up to try and see if I can make it in a week. I’m a frustrated slow maker when there are so many ideas around.
I have had the same with the Indigo and Lyra, I could never really get them to fit nicely or in a style I thought suited. I'm really happy with this one though, as you can tell lol Give it a go, what's the worst that can happen 🥰 x
Love it Ruth red really does suit you, looking forward to seeing what you make with the Merchant & Mills fabric. I’m still in the fence with the Zadie it’s all the binding and the fit that puts me off so good luck it you tackle it next 💕🥰💕🥰💕
Love your Nell dresses, I would practice the Zadie Ruth, I’ve tried it several times and can’t quite make the fit right, Becs and Adele both recommended a sway back adjustment but I have worked out how to do that either.
Really lovely video Ruth - your Nell dressed are so so lovely. I have the Rosery Apparel Daisy pattern and it's ever so similar isn't it! Having had both - would you just say the difference is the Nell is a more oversized fit? I can't decide whether to buy the Nell pattern! Take care and keep up the lovely sewing chats! x
Hi Colette, the main differences are the wait sits a little lower on the Nell, the bust darts are also a tad lower and it doesn't have the extra waist darts like the Daisy does. The Daisy sleeves are gathered with elastic at the cuff, although I tended to put the sleeves in from the Rosa dress which were straighter. The facing piece is neater on the Daisy because it runs all the way down the front while on the Nell it only goes as far as the waist. The shoulders are a little wider on the Daisy making the seam sit just over the edge, the Nell sits right on my shoulder. And yes, the Nell is intended to be a slightly roomier fit than the Daisy. Until the Nell came along, the Daisy was my most frequently made pattern however, I think the Nell might knock it off that top spot 🥰
The red looks wonderful on you! It suits your colouring. I’ve just ordered the Nell pattern. I’m new to sewing and go to classes. I seem to be collecting quite a few patterns I wish to sew.
Oh that's wonderful! I am sure you will get on just fine with the Nell, the instructions are great and you'll soon be swishing around and feeling proud of your amazing dressmaking skills 🥰
I love your Nell dresses. I have ordered red linen to make a hacked version. I plan to combine the AA Anthea and Indigo to make my version of the Nell. I love my 2 Zadies, I only added length to the pants because I am tall. I want to buy the Zadie dress add on and make a dress. OR I may do another hack with the BHL Hannah dress, lol. I spend so much time making pattern adjustments (printing, taping, cutting too) that when I have a bodice that fits well, hacking is now my preference. What are your favorite patterns that you like to make?
Great idea to combine the Anthea and the Indigo, you will have to let me know how it turns out! My favourite garments to sew are shirts and button up dresses so the Nell has been a very enjoyable make for me 🥰
I’m a beginner and I’m making a Nell dress….i keep looking at your vlogs to see the dress. I’ve finished the bodice, and am just about to attempt the skirts….I haven’t seen a sew along, so I’m doing it from the instructions. I really love your versions, and I’m making the same version. I have topstitched all around the neck facings but I’m not sure if I’m supposed to. Any hints and tips would be gratefully accepted. 😊
..I’m now very disappointed…it makes me look enormous …… I had trouble with the gathering stitches…I did 3 rows like it said, it I just couldn’t get it to gather, kept snapping the thread… I think I’ll just put the skirt on without gathers, and take it in…..
Oh no, what type of fabric are you using? I only do 2 rows of gathering on the longest stitch length and I’ve not had any snapping. I chose not to top stitch around the facing but I don’t think there is a right or wrong there so I wouldn’t worry about that. If you press the gathers to flatten them will it help with the overall look? x
I think the fabric I wrong, it's a viscose linen, but it's too stretchy I think. And I cut the bodice too short at the back. I notice that yours goes lower in the back, but on the pattern there is 2 cut lines...I cut the top one. It's too big I think... I'm very disappointed though. It's put me off trying again. It was cheap fabric, and it was a tworle. I don't think I have the right body shape for it.
Love the red on you - looks great. Can I ask you about your Pfaff machine - what model is it? What’s it like at doing buttonholes - I’m fed up with not being able to do buttonholes - my machine only seems to want to do them on practice fabric!
Thank you so much 🥰 I have the Pfaff Quilt Ambition 630, it's a recent upgrade from a Janome HC8100. Both actually make really nice button holes but I still always hold my breath when I start to sew them lol x
@@SeamStressedRuththank you ,I’ve made Marila Walker Isca dress about three times and I love it so I though ide make another on in that gingham .so thank you for your reply 🥰👍
Red is my favorite color and I think that dress is very flattering on you with your coloring.
You chose the swatch because bright colors look good on you!😊

Definitely don't shy away from red, that shade is making you glow. I made a zadie as a playsuit, it's an easy make 😊

Yes Karen!!!! I'm so happy to hear this, no stopping you now, you'll be putting buttons on everything 😃
The red Nell looks so fresh and stylish. Have you tried the Sydney dress by Style Arc? it looks very nice and is next on my list for summer.
No I've not tried that one yet, it's a similar shape to the Tessuti Eva dress which I made a few of last summer. It looks a perfect summer dress 🥰
When you showed the picture of you with the swatches the one I thought suited you best , was the one you chose
Oh that's good to hear! I am trying be a bit more colourful so hopefully it will suit me when it's a full garment 🤞 x
