      I'm using Skivertex which may be difficult for you to obtain as it is a commercial covering material made for people doing large quantities. Any quality book cloth will work, I would recommend book cloth that is paper backed like Canapetta or the Asahi Japanese cloths that make beautiful boxes. My friend makes decorative wooden boxes and was wondering how to cut leather exactly to fit inside the lids. The boxes have a somewhat complex shape and he was wondering how to make a pattern of it to cut the leather insert to fit perfectly. Do you have any suggestions? The work you do is very high quality! Thanks for the vids.

    • @Ceropegia
      @Ceropegia  5 лет назад +1

      Since the boxes have a complex shape, what I would do is take a piece of malleable paper, (oriental, tissue) cut a rough larger than the top and then press it into the top to be lined. Then press the paper into all of the edges of the inside of the box top, going up the sides/walls is not important, only the flat area of the top that is to be lined. Then, once the paper is removed, you have a pattern of what is essentially to be covered. I would then cut a thin cardboard to fit the space exactly, if the leather is thick it should be pared so that the cardboard can be covered and the leather wrapping around the edges of the liner cardboard. The cardboard may have to be trimmed a little to accommodate the thickness of the leather. I am assuming that the inside sides of the top are not to be covered, if they are, the walls should be covered first so that the leather fills/crosses the edge of the join. That way when the lining is inserted and glued into place there is a continuous effect of the leather lining.
      Not seeing the box, I can only guess at the problem and this is the way I would start for an odd shaped box. Good luck and thanks for watching.

    • @Ceropegia
      @Ceropegia  3 года назад +1

      Andre, I measure the depth of the box and add material for the flaps (1.75"), inside and out; I roll the box next to a tape measure or ruler to get the length . ( example - depth =3" so I cut material 7.5" wide and the length 22" plus an inch and a half or so to cut off once the sides are covered. the covering material is folded in half lengthwise and the fold is where the open side of the box is placed as you see in the video.) ***** I am assuming you are asking about the top edge of the box; once you make the miter cut and open the fabric you will see where the the cuts fall. Would it be the same process to cover the outside of a box in velvet?

    • @Ceropegia
      @Ceropegia  4 года назад +1

      Velvet is a different material, the velvet should be paper backed unless you are making a padded box, then the work would be more like covering a chair. The difficulty is always at the seams/corners. Folding edges on the outside and tacking it down on the inside the box. Without folding the edges the velvet will always fray, velvet boxes like those for jewelry are almost always flocked. Thanks for watching.

    What are the two main materials that you are using? What are the technical names so I can order them. Thank you.

      The covering material is Skivertex available online, the boards are Davy board available from many sources. Talas on loin and if you are in my tristate area also Ernest Schaeffer in Union New Jersey, for pick up or delivery, Ernest may have a minimum for shipping, he also has the PVA. Thanks for watching.

    Wow. You make that look so easy. What is the material used to cover the box. You are using the term fabric, but it looks and sounds like it's done sort of paper
    Where do you get it from and is it available in luxury top end type finishes?
    Awesome work!

    How did you measure the paper? That info is mandatory for me.

    • @Ceropegia
      @Ceropegia  Месяц назад

      I simply roll the box on the table measuring the circumference and add a half inch or so, the width of the paper is twice the box height plus at least an inch to wrap around the bottom on the outside and cover part of the floor inside the box. If you watch my other box covering videos you should see me do that in those. This video was made after those earlier videos.
      Thanks for watching.

    How do I measure the inside of the box for lining - how much do I subtract from the length of the so the lining fits box? Thank you.

    • @Ceropegia
      @Ceropegia  8 лет назад

      The inside is not measured, Please watch the beginning of the video and you will see. The cover material becomes the lining, no need to measure.

    Can you offer or direct me somewhere for instructions on covering a clipboard with fabric? Thanks for any guidance!

    • @Ceropegia
      @Ceropegia  6 лет назад

      A good local hand binder should be able to do that for you. You have given no details of what you need,ie: number of pieces, covering the top and bottom or just the back, type of fabric, your location, intended placement/use, etc. If you are doing a lot of pieces it might be best to laminate and seal the board before the clip is attached, in which case you need to know the manufacturer who may be able to help you find a laminating company . That's the best I can do with what you have given me. Thanks for watching.

      For further reference it is a common wood or similar material construction. I want the entire surface covered both front and back. I’d also like to have some light cushioning on the back side. It is going to be used on my vehicle dashboard while laying on the upper dash tray. I do not want it to rattle and also want it to match the interior. Does this information change your answer in any way? Thanks very much!

      Ese material es Skivertex. Es un papel plastificado para uso comercial. Tendrás que buscarlo en la web. Es posible que pueda obtener algunos o averiguar dónde se venden en su país. ¡Gracias por ver!
