I see the arguments in the comment that I should have used 1 or 2 or popped it. The reason you learn to smoothly let out the clutch, is if you have a short distance you will have to use 1st gear. If you just pop your clutch in 1st gear, in a short distance of a couple of feet, the car will just jerk to a stop. So the reason this vid is showing 3rd gear is I wanted to show you on video, how to smoothly bring up the clutch and that is easier to show in 3rd gear over a longer distance (for the video). I’m a 48 yo Black woman who had to teach this to a young man a few weeks ago. He was so shocked! Great video! Wish o could send this to home for future reference.
Note, you have to put it in 3rd gear because if you put it in low gear and the car gets going it's going to "jump" hard when the car turns on. and remember the clutch, it's going to be hard to push the car if it's you don't engage the clutch. and be ready with the brakes, your car might lunge forward a considerable distance. You can also get it into neutral, get the car rolling. and when it's quite fast enough put it in 3rd. also works but it's basically the same principal just adjust to what you feel like you can do the best.
I know how it’s done the car rolling is acting like the starter. By keeping it in gear that spins the engine over. And keeping the key on run makes sure there’s power to coil to spark once spark happens engine runs. Also the belt goes around the alternator and when the engine is turning it’s moving that belt over the alternator creating power.
2. gear is the best for push roll. and it has to be done carefully. otherwise trigger belt can jump from eccentric cogwheel. by the way you are right its so bad push on video
Sorry for the noobish question. If I pop-start my vehicle, will it bypass the starter of the vehicle? Is it possible to pop-start a manual transmission vehicle that has a broken starter? Yes, I did ask the same question two different ways. Thank you for reading this comment. Especially, thank you for answering the questions.
rtfm read the manual, not all cars are allowed to be started this way; older cars are ok with this but newer cars may take some damage; don't do it if it isn't allowed because there are some other side effects (read the manual). This starting method was/is comon with some bikes and older cars (but in the first or the second gear)
If the manual makes no mention of whether this bypasses the starter, is it safe to assume the starter is bypassed? To put this question in proper perspective, I am a bit of a computer technician. I own a device called a static-discharge bracelet. It comes with a manual. The manual makes no mention of the fact, that if the computer is on, there is a decent chance using the bracelet will kill you. Every book talking about using the bracelet mentions this fact, with the major exception of the book included with the purchase of the bracelet. The owner's manual for the Nissan Pathfinder does recommend pop starting the vehicle, if the vehicle will not start. However, it barely says anything about it. This suggests to me, it will bypass the starter, but I am still not sure. If it does not mention it, is it safe to pop start the vehicle when the starter needs to be replaced?
+losttownstreet what damage does it do on newer vehicles and what's wrong with pop-starting??? Pop-starting a vehicle has the same concept of hand starting a portable generator except with the use of a starting motor. If you have a good battery, it can provide continuous power to the spark plugs which is in-sync with every cycle of the piston( car rolling motion). It's just a nuisance if you have a broken starter motor but it is safe and doable to pop-start your car even the newer ones. For Automatics, it would probably be difficult because you need to spin that torque converter at a certain rpm to transmit power from the engine to the transmission.
I did this on a tractor when I was 15 and had no idea what I was doing. The tractor had been sitting in the garage for a year and a half it was completely dead, I had heard somewhere that you can roll start a manual car, so I thought to myself 'why not manual a tractor?' luckily I was already on a hill. It was a stupid designed tractor, the clutch and the brake were the same pedal, if you push the brake pedal 1/4 of the way down it would release the clutch, if you push it past there it was the brake pedal. This was also the only pedal on the tractor, once you're in gear you're going.
I didn't know you could do this until my dad did it. We have a diesel Accord, and all you need is second and it doesn't shake and rattle like in this video. It just starts and it's as if you were moving smoothly.
Lol this saved my ass. When I first bought my Jetta, it already had a weak battery. I was at a freeway exit and it had an incline. I stalled it, and it wouldn't start back up. Everyone behind me was getting mad and started beeping at me. So I put it in reverse, held the clutch, rolled backwards hoping no one was coming up the incline, and popped the clutch and it worked. At the next intersection I was so relieved and happy. I was sweating the rest of the way back with my heart racing. One of the biggest reasons I love manuals.
I was in high school, orientation day. It was rainy and nasty. I accidentally left my lights on, come back to the car and it is completely dead. Ask my friends if they can help me push my Truck down the hill. I went down two full banks, almost hit 3 cars and a tree. I got the car started though! They couldn't jump my car cause I was surrounded with cars and we couldn't get it close enough.
M1NH5AN3 not if it's another pedal you slam down on to and it creates an isolated spark in a closed chamber except for it's little wires that leads to the battery

I don’t have a car that has a push button ignition, but try to, attempt to turn the car on by pushing the button. I think it will put the car into the “on” position. And then you just do the same thing here. But don’t do what she said here, “put the car third gear.” Instead, put the car in second gear, get up to 5-10mph or faster, then let go of the clutch. If the car starts, add some gas just to make sure it stays on.
I do it in 2nd and just pop the clutch If I need to go up hill then I put it in reverse and do the same though be ready to brake as my car is rolling backwards instead of forwards.
they key is the switch that turns on the power to computer and fuel pump and ignition. It is like you have a light switch in your room and to turn on the light you need to flip the light switch once key is on position when power starts to generate from rolling the car it will power the computer and fuel pump and ignition but it can't happen without you turning the key to on
@@DriveManual but the point of a key is just to provide electricity to starter motor which makes engine working and nothing else, after that engine does everything, my questiong is when you roll a car can you make engine start working fast enought to start process of inhale micture of fuel and air and thus start a car? I dont get the part with a key, and is it what i'm saying possible? Sorry for bad english.
@@markopopovic2266 adding to last reply see this picture imgur.com/Qj5NnKl the "acc on" means "accessory on" that is fuel pump , computer ,ignition , then you turn al the way forward for starter, after starter starts car you release key and it flip back to "acc on". That is why you need key
It's fine when you're on a hill but what if you need to push it yourself? Will the the car not be really hard to move if the clutch isn't engaged? Or do you start the car, take the handbrake off, push it, jump back in, press clutch and put in gear. Then try and start the engine. That seems right now that I've written it down lol
you put the car in neutral, put car to on, get out, push car near a-pillar , don't push on door (easy to break door) car starts to roll then you jump in (be careful you don't trip and run over yourself) and when you jump in you aim for the clutch pedal , press clutch in , move stick to 1st, pop clutch out and car hopefully starts, give little gas so car doesn't die, if car doesn't start you have to do all over again. One time I did it like 3 times in row and car still didn't start lol , I was so tired I fainted and had to call an ambulance to get me LOL there's more to that story like when I was passed out on the ground someone threw a beer bottle at me ....but i'll put it in a video one day lol
@@DriveManual After you put the car to go on, you still need to release the handbrake though or the car won't move lol. Good video though and accurate description of the theory behind it. Yup I've had a fair share of pushing the car, so I know and my cousin did it once in front of me. Haha omg really, why would someone do that lol maybe they just thought you were wasted, or to see if you were alive.
yup release the handbrake lol , yeah I was at back of an apartment in bad neighbourhood and someone threw bottle from balcony LOL then someone spit on me and I felt it on my face as I was laying on the curb waiting for ambulance LOL
Out of curiosity, would this work on a vehicle that has a push button ignition rather than a key? I wouldn't see why not, just curious how the ignition switch differs in a key vs a button.
if u are outisde the car like this u keep it in neutral ruclips.net/video/uU9NdbLitaw/видео.html if you are inside the car keep it in gear no need to keep it in neutral
A while back I had a shitty 1991 Toyota Celica, it was a good reliable car but it had a dead battery so it would go flat often and I had to push and start the car all at once lol. It was fun. Usually I’ll try to push the car to the closest slope, let it role and then running back to the car and starting it. Or just push it as hard as I could until I can’t catch up with the car moving so I jump back as fast as I could.
Start pushing with the door open, at the A pillar and the vehicle in neutral, once you have momentum jump in, push in the clutch and put it in gear and pop it. I've had cars that had to have quite a bit of speed built up and others that didn't need to roll but just a hair
i did this and my engine was misfiring and the revs were fluctuating quite a bit. i turned the car off and used a jumper cable and it didnt misfire anymore and the revs were stable. anyone know why this would have happened?
I had this problem twice due to a bad Alternator I recently had it rebuilt so everything is good so far but my old battery killed my Alternator it was so bad with corrosion it ate away the positive terminal I had to replace both my battery and my positive terminal along with rebuilding my OEM Alternator a few people told me I should try to push my car and jump start it I wasn't sure how to do this plus I wasn't facing downhill so my car wouldn't roll if I tried it
if you keep your old battery you can try boosting it with that as well. But if alternator is killing the battery it may be overcharging because of bad voltage regulator you can see this alternator is overcharging ruclips.net/video/Lxvv226Yyzs/видео.htmlm5s pushing the voltage to 17V it killed the battery
1st gear is harder to move, it's a big gear which allows for more torque but less speed, 2nd is smaller, more speed less torque, 3rd is smaller stil so more more speed less less torque, like when you floor it in 1st you pick up more speed faster but at a lower speed overall than 5th or 6th
Crazy how this car is still rolling while in 3rd gear. maybe since it is a smaller gear than 1st it will keep rolling. But at that low of rpm wouldnt it stall?
There are a few guys here that do all these things by themselves : push, get back in and do remaining steps. I am looking for a video that shows those things; it would be fun to watch, although not fun at all for him whom does the push start by himself.
Benvolio not for this you need a high heat to get the engine rotating then you can put the clutch in and go to first or second of you’ve got some speed

Needs higher speed in 3rd. He should have done second as well.
Just tried the clutch start. Success. Thanks bud
I dont know any of the reasons why but Ive never heard of being in 3rd for it. Everyone always does 1st or 2nd round my way.
Thank you very much my car was in Tescos now I can move thanks
I do it in 2nd and just pop the clutch
If I need to go up hill then I put it in reverse and do the same though be ready to brake as my car is rolling backwards instead of forwards.
u just saved me and my friend his starter got burnt and i poped it in 1st worked right away
how different will it be with the push start/stop ignition switch instead of key?
Thank you for this video! Just saved me a $125 call out charge to replace my battery! Now I can just drive to get one and replace it myself :)
Can you do this without key, what's the point of the key here, power from wheel will transmit back to the engine right?
they key is the switch that turns on the power to computer and fuel pump and ignition.
Talking about internal combustion engine
@@markopopovic2266 there is 2 position in key switch one is turn on power, then all the way forward is to turn starter
Thanks you saved me and my girl after the car went in a pool of water..
How did it even start after the fact?!?
Is it true you cannot do that with automatic transmission cars?
what happens if i don't slowly let off the clutch and u just let it off fast?
Helped start my friends car so he could take it to the garage, thanks 😊
why would you go 3rd gear, when putting it in 2nd would jolt it awake too.
Ehhh do 2nd gear and your video is perfect buddy
Does this work with newer cars like a 2013 jetta?
As long as it's a manual it should work.
I had done this before but its was always rough you just made it way easier thank you
Good job, buddy! Really helped me out. Thanks from Texas.
So before letting go of the clutch you don't have to put the key in ignition mode?
No.
Once the car is rolling and the clutch is released the car will automatically ignite the engine.
does it work with a start and stop car like with no keys but a card and a start and stop button ?

@@DriveManual Eww that's horrible, you should have sued them, although probably hard to tell who it was if you had already fainted, poor you.
You sound like Linus.
Give Linus a blanket to suck and hold. HA ! ! ! Driving used to be a "participants activity". No guts, no glory.
Drunk Linus
nah man stop being a jerk
Achinon l
well that's linus but 100x slower ...
Is this due to a dying battery? What is the cause for this?
Yeah it’s when your battery has enough juice to show some dash lights but not ignite the engine. You roll start it to get the engine running
Thanks, just saved me from having to jump my car. Long time since I've popped a clutch
Hi, what was the issue with your car? Cuz I'm getting the exact same signs when trying to start mine
Do you need to press the acceleration ..when you let out the clutch..??
Out of curiosity, would this work on a vehicle that has a push button ignition rather than a key?
I wouldn't see why not, just curious how the ignition switch differs in a key vs a button.
please check out the pinned links
@@DriveManual Yeah I'm a tool and saw it 1 minute later in my reccomended. My bad. But great vid!
My check engine light is now will it go away?
Bro i did try it with the 3 gear ⚙️ it dnt work so i was like why not 1 gear....it started....what can u tell me about that
please read the pinned post and description
I’ve seen people put the car in neutral first before popping it into gear once the car starts rolling, is this the same,
if u are outisde the car like this u keep it in neutral ruclips.net/video/uU9NdbLitaw/видео.html if you are inside the car keep it in gear no need to keep it in neutral
It can't do in automatic transmission madam? If not why?
Thanks for the videos. Learned manual through your videos. You've helped me and many others.
That’s the best part about a manual 🤟
What if youre on level ground on your own with a big ass vehicle?
Start pushing with the door open, at the A pillar and the vehicle in neutral, once you have momentum jump in, push in the clutch and put it in gear and pop it. I've had cars that had to have quite a bit of speed built up and others that didn't need to roll but just a hair
i did this and my engine was misfiring and the revs were fluctuating quite a bit. i turned the car off and used a jumper cable and it didnt misfire anymore and the revs were stable. anyone know why this would have happened?
THANK YOU this saved me a while of waiting in the Walmart parking lot
I have a manual transmission car but the problem is it has a smart key not like push button smart key the other one idk what it call but it won’t turn
Can you do it rolling backwards?
Is there a reason for why he puts it into 3rd gear and not 1st or 2nd?
1st gear is harder to move, it's a big gear which allows for more torque but less speed, 2nd is smaller, more speed less torque, 3rd is smaller stil so more more speed less less torque, like when you floor it in 1st you pick up more speed faster but at a lower speed overall than 5th or 6th
@@Real-Ruby-Red oh thanks man
Dude there’s a special place in heaven for you
Crazy how this car is still rolling while in 3rd gear. maybe since it is a smaller gear than 1st it will keep rolling. But at that low of rpm wouldnt it stall?
It's not rolling in 3rd gear?clutch was in
Why not second gear or first gear? third seems to high for the lack of speed.
that is explained in the pinned post and description?
read the pinned post
lots asked this but I thought I explained it pretty well. so i dunno what to say
were you able to check description and pinned post :)
2. gear is the best for push roll. and has to be done carefully. otherwise trigger belt can jump from eccentric cogwheel.
Awesome! Just wondering, can I do this with a working battery just to practice in case of emergency? Thanks!
Yea you can
Every young person should know how to do this. Everyone.
Does this work for dead battery?
Who pushed the car?
Can you roll start on reverse if u happen to be on a hill?
Yes
There are a few guys here that do all these things by themselves : push, get back in and do remaining steps. I am looking for a video that shows those things; it would be fun to watch, although not fun at all for him whom does the push start by himself.
I have done it a lot in the lighter older civic maybe I will make a video I have never seen a video of it.
+Drive manual
Thanks, it would be fun to watch.
Should be first not third gear ??
Benvolio no
Benvolio not for this you need a high heat to get the engine rotating then you can put the clutch in and go to first or second of you’ve got some speed
Its actually second.
First gear would make the engine rotate faster. So I think you correct
Owais Hoeflich you do this at like 10mph so second is fine, first is a bit too sensitive for it
I literally watched this video and start my car thanks 👍
reverse roll on a hill to start ?
Interesting to know looks very easy
