  • DRUM: The most famous Maxi class racing yacht of her generation, was the vision of pop star Simon Le Bon of Duran Duran, who fulfilled a dream when he took up the challenge of sailing the 1985 Whitbread Round The World Race.
    Following her dramatic capsize in the 1985 Fastnet race after losing her keel, DRUM went on to finish a credible third overall. Here is the entire 1987 Documentary featuring the timeless song 'Grey Lady Of The Sea' penned by Le Bon for this feature. Enjoy!

    I was so lucky to see Simon in New Zealand back in 1986 when Drum stopped in Auckland . I walked with Simon and Yasmine along the main street of Auckland City until they went into a hotel . It was a very cherished memory and I had admired Simon for a long time .

    I’m a Duran Duran fan. A friend told me about Drum. Come sail with us in Southern California. It’s not Whitbread or anything close, but we have fun out here.

    What a joy to watch this again after all this time...just incredible. It's only now we understand that Simon really needed a break from the band's hectic schedule. Well done Simon!😎

    IOR Maxis were the most aesthetically beautiful racing sailboats ever designed . They were pure power and grace .

    • @12345fowler
      @12345fowler Месяц назад

      Yep, totally agree. Not only aesthetics but the whole race was such an equilibrium between men and nature. Long time at sea, numerous crew onboard with sometime dramatic moments and other moments enjoyable and crazy (crew taking a bath suspended by the spinnaker pole & other silly stuff when conditions permit etc.) There was a sense of humans at the mercy of the seas more than anything in the present days, because these boats altough there were bloody fast fo a monohull design, were slow enough that they were just at the mercy of the weather system thery were in. In todays races, multi-hull oats are so fast they can jump from one weather system to another one, they sail faster than the wetaher system itself lol. Not the same spirit.

    And then came carbon fibre. And then came REAL computer power helping in design. And then came hydrofoils. And then finally the Medieval Eighties were a thing of the past. Gee, EVERYTHING was awkward in those years, was it? Even racing was without the special material materials, look at it, it looks exactly like a large touring yacht, nothing special, nothing fancy. That is WEIRD!
