I spend abut 6 months per year in the Philippines (from USA) and use a local Android phone there with two simcards, one for regular calling and one which is a postpaid data plan which runs 20 dollars per month for 80 GB. I then put this phone on tethering, which gives me my own portable WIFI. My other phone is an Iphone 7,with a USA number on ATT. I turn off data on this phone, use WIFI to connect to the other phone, and use Viber for all my texts and calls. I can call any number in the world from my IPhone using Viber Out directly for pennies per minute, I usually keep a ten dollar balance on it which lasts for a month or more. Calls to anyone with Viber on their phone are free. If I get a call from the USA, I do not answer it, but look at the number and call them back using Viber. Works great!
Wechat is also a very popular app! Especially when traveling to China, many apps are blocked. (I heard a rumor about some being unblocked next year or something) we chat is free wifi international messaging, and one of the few allowed in China. It also has a built in translator just in case you are conversing in a foreign language. Video calls and calls are free as well.
I am using a phone in my country which I bought from another country. It was a phone with connection (monthly basis payment). But I cannot use any mobile data here but the calls and sms are fine. The phone do not support any internet from any mobile operator. Do you know what is the problem?
it's crap compared to 9/10 local sims - AT&T offers 1GB for $60, I don't think there's a single country in the world where 1GB will cost you that much. In Poland it'd cost you less than $5.
Thanks for your complete guide! and sharing your knowledge. This is so clean, detail and thorough explanation. I usually like videos here and there and never comment or read the comments. Your YT-Chanel is superb! I would check-out your other social networks!
Hi I’m planning to go to London and Thailand and I have sprint I phone can I Unlock the phone by sprint and buy a SIM card over there and when I am back can I lock back in the state without any problem please tell me in detail thanks
I found out years ago that it is way cheaper to just buy a cheap phone IN the country that you will be staying in , buy the credits and load it up. As far as traveling from US to Canada , our phones don't work up there. I DO use my phone wherever there is a free WiFi signal to check Email and such. If I wish to make a phone call in Canada using my phone I use Skype on the free WiFi. This same method also works in most European countries including eastern European countries usually within a 4 or 5 star hotel's FREE WiFi. Using the Skype costs me nothing to make international calls to USA as it's going through the internet NOT a phone system. I DO still need to have my yearly subscription for Skype however , that's my only cost. NEVER use the phone services on a commercial air flight however , you won't realize just exactly how expensive that is until it gets charged to your credit card. It's MORE expensive than a satellite phone.
You lost me halfway thru. How do you install apps before you leave somehow with your original US number? Does the unlocked phone have a SIM card already in it? How do all the contacts get on the new travel phone?
Thanks for the video. Do you have any tips specific for using an Iphone 6s in China? I am going to be there later this year and I know they have some different rules for cellular networks and internet usage.
You forgot to mention that FaceBook messenger does make "calls" to your FaceBook contacts. Also, T-Mobile US is now offering a plan that allows you to talk, text and use unlimited 4G Data, in Canada, México and USA as if you were in one big country, which is great!
Good addition on the Facebook calling! And that feature for T-Mobile came out after I filmed this but it's a good option for people that A. have T-Mobile and B. Are also going to Canada or Mexico. So if you don't have T-Mobile and travel or if you plan to travel to any other country besides those two then this video should still help.
Since a lot of the prepaid sim cards come with unlimited talk and somewhere around 100 texts, but only around 1 GB of data, wouldn't it be the opposite; wouldn't you want to preserve your data, and only text and talk for the most part?
Where do I buy a data only plan? I am going to Italy. Do I have to buy a jail broken phone, a sim card, and a data only plan in the usa or do I wait to buy everything in Italy?
+Barbie Pena no need to be jailbroken but the phone needs to be unlocked so it can accept a sim from another carrier. You can unlock it here - www.unlockmyphone.io Then you go to Vodafone or a similar Italian carrier and ask for a prepaid data only sim. Most come with some minutes and texts but that's fine just don't use them. Good luck!
What keyboard do I use to get the IMEI number? I tried using the number pad in my telephone section and it calls Verizon and gives an error code. I tried using the keyboard in my text app and it simply sends a text. I’m very confused lol. But I really need to figure out to use my phone overseas.
I have iphone se blacklist and locked carrier, can i just unlock carrier without cleaning imei and it's blacklist in UK i think, can i use that in Indonesia using local SIM? And can i unlock it without cleaning imei?
Steve Signorelli went last summer, look for the vending machine near passport control. Recommend the 3 sim as you get unlimited data and good amount of minutes and text. Imessage and FaceTime audio are free of charge as is Facebook messenger. Use something like Skype as it will be much cheaper. If you have tmobile however there is no roaming fees:)
Wait a minute I thought that there was different SIM cards or something like that that requires you to buy international phones that can work outside of the US
This video is over two years old. Android Hangouts not no longer supports SIM cards. Another app must be downloaded and Hangouts will nag you until you take care of it.
So I watched the video and I am now thoroughly confused lol I seriously need help with this lol I’ll be traveling to England for 4-6 weeks and maybe Rome for 3-4 days and I’m clueless. I have an iPhone with Verizon and don’t even know where to start
If you're going to the UK, try the 3mobile network, they offer an "all you can eat" data plan for £15, it lasts for a month, it gives you a few hundred texts & calling minutes and some European roaming including France, Belgium, Spain & Germany
I am going to Venice Italy and Paris France next week. I plan to buy a sim for my unlocked AT&T phone from an European provider upon my arrival. I plan on using whatsapp or Facebook messenger to text me friends in the US while I am there. Will my friends be charged a fee for receiving text from an European number? Also will I be able to use Facebook messenger to make free calls and video chat my friends in the US?
Anyone who lives in Canada will be pleased that Rogers offers Roam Like Home to over 30 different countries and territories, among them Ukraine, Russia, Israel, the British Isles, most mainland Ibero-American countries and most Schengen member states.
Unfortunately, not much. You can't unlock a Sprint phone with a code (nor can you use most Sprint phones overseas even if you did unlock it ). I'd recommend buying an unlocked phone for traveling as the only real option.
What I want to know is how to save my old phone number when I go overseas long term. I want to have the number waiting for me when I get back. I don't have a regular carrier, I use prepaid cards from Straight Talk.
Suppose I'm in Europe and the bank sends my US number a text code because I'm trying to login to my bank account from my laptop. Will WhatsApp be good enough to receive the text? How about if they call my US number? Any way for me to get the message or take the call while my European SIM card is in my phone?
Unfortunately there isn't a way to do any of that once you remove the US SIM so it's best to make sure you don't need to do any of that while on the trip. If you do you can put your US Sim back in before hand but keep in mind your carrier will probably charge you for the call and text when they come in
@@TheUnlockr Man that sucks since I'm often away for 6 weeks at a time, but I guess I can swap SIMs a few times if I have to. Thanks for the advice and the quick reply.
I have and Att, bt can i use and old sim card that's not currently in use like t-mobile from long time ago. Will that work? Cuz I got one bt it hasn't been active since the sidekick came out! Let me no! Thanks late
No it needs to be an active sim. Just borrow a friend's to get it to prompt for the unlock code, put in the code you got and then it'll be unlocked permanently and you can give the sim right back to your friend.
I used to always buy a foreign SIM..... Until I switched to project fi. Now it's just $10/gb pretty much everywhere. 70% cheaper than getting a Tellus SIM. Unfortunately project fi has no coverage in Macau, although they do have coverage in HK and China. A Macau SIM was about $15 for 500mb, and project fi phones are unlocked from day one.
It's better to have an unlocked phone tbh. For my Christmas present I went to Apple and got my iPhone but I had to think alot to get a unlocked or locked and my mom randomly yelled "UNLOCKED" And I'm there like "😂💀 STOP EMBARRASSING me" 😂
That is why you switch to T-Mobile in Mexico and Canada calling, texting and data is all unlimited.. There are no extra charges. Whatever plan you have in the US you will have in Mexico and Canada. And plus 140 countries you have unlimited data and texting.. Just look on T-Mobile's website and look into international roaming it's free.
hey i got the code for my phone bt there was no unlocking for my phone! is my phone already unlocked or what?i just got my note edge too! everytime i turn on my phone it goes to my screen saver, put in my pin then thats it! it doesnt have the unlock part! hit me back later thanks
Or I can just grab an "international travel pass" from my Telco (Telstra here in Australia) $10 a day up front since I'm going to the US in March for 14 days it'll cost me $140 but comes with unlimited calls to and from standard numbers, Unlimited text to and from standard numbers, 1.03gb data with 3c per MB excess data which will be more then sufficient for 14 days or I could buy and use an international sim which will cost closer to $200 with $50 included calls and text and 500mb data so using my own telco with a international travel pass works out cheaper and easier and I get to use my own number and yes I've used it before on cruises using the ships repeater and no bill shock. That's on top of my standard plan so it won't affect it, I just go into Telstra go I need a travel pass for these dates pay for the days I'm going to be there turn my phone off in Sydney then when I land in LA flick it back on and happy days haven't had bill shock yet. Vodafone another one of our carriers do a $5 a day roaming but limits usage saw it earlier and it's limited by the plan / prepaid your on so $5 a day and say $30 recharge and 400mb realistically you get $25 worth of calls / text and 400mb data by the time you need to top up or it starts digging into your bill.
1. I recommend just that in the video after I talk about unlocking a phone and give you some of my favorites right now in the link in the description. 2. Rooting and unlocking aren't related and have no affect on each other. See this for more info - theunlockr.com/2010/08/27/android-101-rooting-jailbreaking-and-unlocking/
