- Welcome to today's video, which is all about being autistic and a student nurse. The pros, the cons and all of the questions I often get asked.
I was diagnosed at 27 with Asperger's Syndrome (High functioning autism). I know that this term is frowned upon by many but it is the term noted on my diagnosis paper.
I answer all of the questions I often get asked and run through the pros and cons of being autistic and being a student nurse

Been a nurse for 30 years and it’s been one difficult road! So mentally exhausting. I gave my all to my patients and had so little left for me and my family. The physical part of nursing wasn’t hard, it was the social interactions that knocked me out. My favorite patients were those who were confused or ventilated 😂. I never felt like an imposter, I could almost be myself. Even though I’m really smart when it comes to science, I still worry people will see the weird in me and I try so ridiculously hard to look normal. 😬 One suggestion I have for you is you may enjoy pre-operative nursing. It’s very black & white and regimented. Very specific things need to be done before surgery and I noticed that black & white thinkers did such an amazing job of making sure all the t’s were crossed & i’s were dotted so patients were kept safe. They were also wonderful at catching unstable patients or noticing if they were missing pre-op preparations, like labs or medications. Best of luck to you! I have a job ready to start in a forensic secure unit 😍 but absolutely agree with you here, having black and white thinking certainly helps with having strategic thinking that can make a world of difference in the nursing world ❤ thank you for such lovely, kind words 🥲❤
I’m an autistic RN! So glad to see there’s more of us out there!! I work days/nights in cardiology, and face some bullying, but you and the comments give me hope that things can be ok, and I can make it in this career! ❤❤❤

I am also autistic and in nursing school! I'm graduating in May. I am so excited to find your channel. I wish there were more autistic nurses who shared their stories on YT. This video is so relatable. One thing that is really hard for me is focusing on tasks while also trying to make small talk with the patient so that we aren't sitting in awkward silence. My brain goes into overdrive to do this, as well as making small talk with coworkers, so I have to take several days to recover after clinical days. The alarms are a huge sensory issue for me, but unfortunately I just have to learn to deal with this because you can't just ignore alarms lol. When I got diagnosed, I tried telling an instructor and she just said "oh well I wouldn't have noticed. You are SUPER high functioning!" People really don't understand what type of energy goes into getting myself to function at the level that I do. It sounds like you can relate.
Congratulations lovely 🥰😍Aww thank you ever so much, that is so kind of you to say 🥲 Yeah I find it hard to find student nurse who are autistic on RUclips, so I hope I'm helping in some way ❤ small talk is very difficult and the only thing I speak to coworkers about is if I need to ask something regarding the job. They sit talking with each other and I never join in, but that's how I am happiest. I don't see the need for small talk, unless there is a point to it, this is where some people see me as 'rude' but I'm not 😭 yes the noises within the hospital is very difficult to adapt to but we will do it ❤👌🏼 omg YES to this! There is SO much energy that we use up just to get through the day! It's frustrating isn't it because we appear to just cope but in essence, we are working SO hard to appear that way! ❤
@@Faye.Louise22 Your channel is definitely helping. It's important that people know that you can be a nurse and be autistic and in some ways it is an asset. But yea the coworkers at my clinical gossip way too much lol I don't necessarily understand it but I try so hard to act interested because I want everyone to like me. Anyway, I'm very excited to watch your channel grow.

I am a pre-nursing student now and I was diagnosed with autism when I was 18 months and didn’t talk until I was 5. I have defied so many odds. I also have ADHD, which makes it that much more difficult to live life. But I was told I will make not only a great RN, but a great nurse practitioner!
Hi Jillian, firstly, huge congratulations on your journey to nursing ❤ secondly, I love hearing incredible personal stories of success like this 🥰 I too have ADHD and also believe that I wouldn't be getting as far as I am now without it ❤ I am now starting an integrated masters in September and staying for a 4th year of study so I can be a dual qualified nurse in 2 fields both at masters level - there were only 3 spaces to get in and I got one! So yes you absolutely WILL make an INCREDIBLE nurse practitioner and equally incredible RN whichever ever route you choose ❤ Thank you for sharing this with me 🥰

It's such a difficult process masking, it comes with so many repercussions. Your boys are SO lucky to have you both as parents - you are amazing! I have my bad days (today for example, I am currently suffering the worst burnout I've had in a LONG long time) but it's part of the journey isn't it 🤍 Thank you Adam, that means so much more than you know x

thank you for making this video 💜 im autistic and starting my prereqs in january. im so glad to find someone else whos is autistic and a nurse, i have had doubts and want to ask for accommodations but am scared they will doubt my abilities due to it.
You are so welcome ❤ I love that you have gone for your dreams instead of holding back ❤ you should absolutely ask for accommodations. I FULLY get feeling that they will doubt your abilities - I still feel that way now whenever my new clinical placements find out, but I have never once been treates any other way. Nurses are the most kindest, selfless, understanding people in the world. You are in the safest place to work unjudged and supported ❤

I've only used it twice so upto now appearance wise my face doesn't look any different but it is SO soft so I'm hoping it will visually get better soon 🤞🏼❤
Working with intelectually disabled people which is a very emotionally taxing job meant for socially attuned people and me, having autism and having been through childhood trauma, chose to do the job. But I genuinely feel like our autistic clients and clients that come from broken families feel understood by me. Feeling on the verge of burnout though. I feel like my colleagues wouldnt understand if I told them i have autism. One colleague even bullied me when I told him.
You are doing an incredible job and will making such a difference in so many lives! I'm so sorry to hear you don't feel supported in your working environment and I hope that things have resolved with bullying 🥺 I hope you escalated it to a manger to let them now ❤

I am a second year nursing student also in the uk. I’m 47 and two weeks ago I got diagnosed with asd. I disagree with some of your points here. I struggle to follow rules because they often don’t make sense and other nurses often can’t explain the reasons for them, they need to be logical or I can’t follow them. The professionalism bit I struggle with too as I’m never quite sure what it means exactly, again I need specifics or I will end up pushing the boundaries to find where they are. Quite often I’ll challenge things I’m told because I don’t understand them and they don’t tend to like it and get annoyed with me.
Oh amazing 🥰 which field are you studying? We are all different on the spectrum thats why it is a spectrum 🥰 I am the same with need logical reasoning behind things, which is why I don't understand jokes much as I break them down and they don't make sense. I forever challenge things as I won't do something unless I understand it otherwise I feel I would be unsafe to practice - that is you being professional for sure 🥰 we are taught to question things as nurses, so questioning why you are required to do certain things shows you are thinking about the task at hand which makes you safe in practice 😁
@@Faye.Louise22 I’m doing adult. I just found out yesterday they’re extending my latest placement as they have doubts about my professionalism. It’s annoying because I’ve done things that were encouraged on other placements and on this one they are telling me that they’re wrong. So frustrating!
@@noblestsavage1742 That really is frustrating BUT try not to let it take up too much room in your mind as you're obviously good at what you do or you wouldn't be where you are ❤ I'd use this as an opportunity to voice your struggles and explain how being autistic affects you. They should be more understanding but sometimes the nursing world is so fast paced and busy that us students get misunderstood. I hope it goes well for you, keep me updated ❤
@@Faye.Louise22 they told me that they think m confrontational and that I should explain before I start that I might come across that way and to explain that I’m just trying to get clarity(which I have been doing every time🤯) and that I should try harder to not ask all the time and to reign in my need to ask all the time and let things go. Clearly no understanding of the condition at all, told they had someone before who was very autistic! Anyhoo being referred to disability and inclusion now so hopefully they will have some expertise. I also have adhd which makes it difficult as my impulse control is lacking so hard to reign in the autistic impulses.
