maybe the most intriguing tutorial ive ever watched. I normally prefer short-n-sweet tutorials, but after seeing this video linked from a steam guide to explain how to backup/install files so nothing goes wrong, I got a little paranoid about not messing this up, a little reluctant at first to waste time on a big tutorial, but knew it would be worth it to do it out of going smooth sailing with this stuff. I think it really cleared up the infinite questions I had (whats gmad? whats a gma file? whats gwtool? why do i need to go through these directories?) stuff like that.
I have over 3,000 addons (maps) installed then I ported it over to my external SSD, they are all individually stored in a list of folders inside the 4000 file where the Workshop items are stored, do you have any idea how you could extract them all in bulk size? Or do I have to do it all manually?
if a addon was already removed and the box showing it was, is there a way to still find the addon in any way? because I've lost a ton of maps and models and no way to get them back, jumped back on gmod too late to save really any of the files.
If none of the options shown in the video are suitable then there's not much you can do. If there's no files left on your computer from whatever addon you're trying to back up, the only thing you can do is search the internet to see if someone else has backed up the addon.
Not much can be done about that without knowing the specifics of the addons. Could be they rely on another addon that is not installed, a conflict with another model or addon, or any number of other issues. Check folder placement and files contained, but beyond that you're on your own, I'm afraid - most errors are hard to figure out without inside knowledge, and that's especially so with non-workshop addons.
Hello! Cool video! I have a question tho. What should I do if I have this Addon code (from link like you shows on 4:29 but I dont have in this addon on the list?
There's nothing much you can do - if it's not showing up in the 4000 folder, and you can't find it in the addons folder shown in Chapter 0, then there's nowhere else I know of to find the files. The code method doesn't always work, I mention in the video that most times the addon won't be in the 4000 folder, but there is a small chance it will be. From what I can tell you're out of luck, I'm afraid. And just to clarify, addons only show up in the folder if you are subscribed to them. If you're copying a code from an addon you are not subscribed to, it will not work.
The first method can still work, it just might not be ideal for newer addons or newer users. If you have gmas in your addons folder, the first method should work just fine. To answer your second question, any gma should be able to be converted into a folder/legacy addon. The ones in the addons folder might be outdated, possibly meaning stuff from later updates to the addon may not show up, but aside from that, there shouldn't be any issues with converting an addon from the addons folder.
Yes - I don't know how "new" the update that changed the install location is, but it's new in relation to the old video I made on this topic, which was 2 years ago.
Quick question: Lets say I just backed up a mod that has two ragdolls. I also went onto google drive and uploaded that .gma file to the cloud. Say I change computers in the future, and want that addon but it's taken down offa the workshop. Can I download that file from the cloud and it'll work just fine like on this computer?
I haven't been able to reliably test this, so it may or may not work if you just put the file in. I've had issues where I've shared the gma with someone and it hasn't worked for them, so it may be the case that if it can't recognize the file from when you were subscribed to it, it may not load in-game. Fortunately, the gma will still contain all the necessary files for the addon, even when downloaded from the cloud. If putting the gma in does not work, you should be able to get it working by turning it into a legacy addon, as shown in chapters 2 through 4.
Ok so even if I get onto a new computer and put in the gma file and it doesn't work like now, then I can just basically extract it and turn it into a legacy and it should be fine. As long as I got the gma file, correct?

does the first method still work? like are the added parts intended to show a more effective method of backing up mods or are they the only option
