Weird that the 8800 gtx had an even bigger cooler when it absolutely did not need it

Back in those days, it was the wild west. I have no idea why the GTX 480 had such bad coolers, especially since the power draw was high.

@@TechLegend-comMine started to cause BSODs, so I (properly) reflowed the CPU and the memory chips. Have you looked into a suitable and better blower?

@@tfinmoraes I tried to reflow my GPU but it's still not working right. Unfortunately, it has become a display piece on my wall.

Are there are any mods your average user could do to improve the cooling of a reference card? I just bought myself a GTX 480 after wanting one for so long. I just love the way the reference models look, so I wanted a reference model. But I also want the card to last.

There are some, first you need better thermal pads, you find plenty of them around, Arctic AC makes good ones. Then replace the thermal compound with something better, either Noctua NT-H2 or the Arctic MX-4. Finally, you just need to keep that little fan free of dust, so you need to clean it regularly. Unfortunately, the reference cooler is just not that good for the GTX 480.

Luck of the draw I guess, but my GTX 480 outlasted two GTX 780 ti's. It's been in operation 24/7 for 8 years, give or take the odd power outage or week long vacation. I have no idea how it's still alive. I've never even replaced the pads or paste until today because I plan to throw it into a NAS + server im building (the reason i was looking up teardown videos).

That's good to know. I hope this video was useful to you in taking apart the graphics card.

Damn, my GTX480 is 72deg IDLE :( and 92 under furmark full load. And that's right after i changed thermal grease. I definitely need to change thermal pads too..

Yes you should do that, these graphic cards are very fragile, especially when running hot. I am still looking for one that is working like it should. :/

Is there any GTX 480 with an appropiate cooling?

    • @TechLegend-com

Yes, the following graphics cards have proper cooling: KFA2 GTX 480 Anarchy, Zotac GTX 480 Amp! Edition, GigaByte GTX 480 SOC, MSI GTX 480 Lightning, MSI GTX 480 Twin Frozr II. Good luck finding one in working condition though, I am still trying to find one that will work for more than 30 minutes. :/
