Corrections, clarifications, and updates from @MusNothus: · Jet boots did not exist when I made this guide. So…just forget everything I said and use jet boots instead. · As I mention in the video, the M1000 and Boomstick loadouts I showed (11121 and 11212, respectively) were designed solely for mobility and not combat utility, and therefore they’re really not great for combat (e.g., Fear the Boomstick is not very good for combat and White Phosphorus is a much better choice). The loadouts I actually use for playing on Hazard 5 are 23121 for the M1000 with hoverclock and 11313 for the Boomstick with special powder. I explain why on a Karl.gg loadout page I made: karl.gg/preview/8933#/ · Cool flare technique: I wish I had included this in the video because it’s super useful and I do it all the time, but if you hit F to throw a flare while you are being pulled forward by the grappling hook, the flare will inherit your momentum and will move along with you. In effect, this lights up the cave as you move through it, which lets you see way more than you would throwing a flare while stationary, and it saves you from having to shoot a flare from your flare gun. · Cool movement technique: This wasn’t possible at the time of this video but became possible with an update. If you throw an object in the air and grapple after it, you can catch the object midair and throw it again, allowing you to throw objects much higher. For example: www.reddit.com/r/DeepRockGalactic/comments/uxf661/scout_can_throw_heavy_objects_high_with_grappling/. It can also be done with special powder: ruclips.net/video/hn9R4UdP_Wo/видео.html. On low gravity, this allows you to keep objects in the air indefinitely and even bring them all the way up the drop pod shaft. · 08:31 The speed boost from “Momentum” on the grappling hook does seem to kick in midair, so you do start moving faster through the air, rather than only moving faster after you hit the ground, but I think the fact that it’s so hard to notice proves that the midair effect isn’t that beneficial. 09:18 This also means that you are able to stack overcharged winch and momentum’s effects to slingshot yourself even faster, but whether or not you actually want to do that (since you might just hurt yourself more) or how useful it is to do so is debatable. · 05:28 I mentioned I don’t know how to interpret the grappling hook’s max speed. @boreal9458 explained that the normal walking speed is 300 and the normal running speed is 435. Max speed on the grappling hook is the speed you are pulled forward, and when you let go, your speed is cut in half. As another reference, @xanthousizalith5641 says that the spring-loaded ripper moves at a speed of 1600. · 11:44 I mentioned I reassigned caps lock to be another left shift. Here’s how: I downloaded a program called KeyTweak which is a registry editor that allows you to reassign the function of different keys on your keyboard. KeyTweak is super easy to use and very helpful, so I'd recommend it (though be careful since it is a registry editor). Basically, in that program I reprogrammed the caps lock key to function as an additional left shift key. I really like using the caps lock key for sprinting because it's directly across from the 'A' key, so if my ring finger is on 'A' then it's really easy for my pinky to be on caps lock without my straining my hand to reach it. You could just go into the game and set caps lock as a secondary input for sprint, but then you'll still be turning caps lock on, so you might accidentally type stuff in all caps in chat. I also never actually want to use caps lock, so it hasn't been a problem for me to not have a key for caps lock anymore. I also noticed that there would be times when I was panicking in the game when I'd accidentally hit 'tab' and I'd pull up my terrain scanner and that would get me killed, so I set 'tab' as my secondary input for sprint and now I have ` open my terrain scanner. That means that the tab key, caps lock key, and left shift key all cause me to sprint now, so I can just slam my pinky down indiscriminately and I'll still end up sprinting. · On a related note, one of my favorite QoL mods is mod.io/g/drg/m/sprint-by-default-hold-to-walk because you no longer have to hit shift to sprint. This used to make my pinky finger sore if I played too long, but now I don’t have to worry about that. It also helps prevent accidentally triggering dash when you were just trying to sprint. Keep “hold to sprint” unchecked when using this mod. · 17:01 I’ve heard others give the advice that you want to angle your power attack to be about 45 degrees downward from the angle of your grappling hook (i.e., rather than thinking of it as 15 to 30 degrees downward from level with flat ground), which does seem to be about right on average, though that angle is not exact and depends on how early you let go of the grappling hook, as I explain. · 15:30 Mission seeds are different now, so this seed no longer works. The mission selector also doesn’t seem to give you the exact same cave shape anymore either. · 21:13 With rocky mountain stout or in Sandblasted Corridors, you can do a regular pickaxe strike and then do a power attack immediate afterwards to break terrain twice in a short period of time. Credit to @DrillingInTheNameOf for pointing this out. · 25:34 Another important breakpoint is that on hazard 5 with serrated edge, you can one-shot a caretaker’s appendages with a power attack, but without serrated edge you don’t quite kill them with a power attack. · 27:01 Unfortunately you no longer can start taming a grunt and then keep taming it if you fall away from it. Now you need to remain close by for the whole duration of the charming process. · 28:31 AxisKronos has a video on all the “god spots” in the game: ruclips.net/video/D6eWGVlvvQI/видео.htmlsi=oxMYUlzEnngHWPLd, which are locations where ground melee enemies can’t hit you. Many are best reached by a scout, so I think this is relevant information for scouts to know. · 29:05 As @blueboy1958 mentioned, scouts can help their teammates by grappling to a high up cave angel, then flying it down to the ground so their teammates can ride it. · 29:35 Similar to knocking down health, if you’re ever at a mineral vein but you’re full on that mineral, it’s still best to pickaxe out the whole vein if you have the time. That will allow you or your teammates to quickly pick it up later, which is especially useful if you’re in a huge swarm later and don’t have time to pickaxe it down then. This is also just a courteous thing to do, in my opinion. · 34:48 Another way to gauge distance for bulk smashing is to aim your grappling hook at something more than 16 meters away from you in the direction of the bulk (I often like picking something at my max grappling hook range away), wait for it to walk close enough to you that you see the embers appear, and then grapple. · 34:42 If you are client and have high ping, do not attempt to use the bulk smash technique. The lag from high ping somehow allows bulks to smash before you get out of their attack radius, so they will kill you. · 35:08 To kill more bugs with a bulk smash, pheromone the bulk / ghost / crassus beforehand with a crossbow bolt or pheromone grenade so that bugs will bunch up around it while attacking it. · 38:28 and 40:02 As LazyMaybe explains in this video ruclips.net/video/RyFbfNH6Vj4/видео.html, Quickfire Ejector for the boomstick does not improve your reload time as much as you’d think and only makes you reload 0.15 seconds faster than with double trigger, because the game incorporates the rate of fire into the amount of time it takes to reload. Therefore, double trigger really is a much better choice overall. · 40:46 It now takes 2 cryo grenades to freeze a breeder. · 53:54 Even though dash doesn’t completely negate the slowdowns of stun or electricity, you still do of course speed up when you dash while stunned or electrified, so that’s not to say that dash is not useful in this context. In fact, I’d say dash is the best way to get away from a slasher after it stuns you, aside from using the grappling hook. · 54:32 @sawyerwedeimann3767 says, “the second wind perk continues when grappling. so if you run for 2 seconds then grapple and keep running when you land you only need to run for 2 more seconds and you will keep the boost as long as you keep moving so if you use it right it can be an almost permanent speedboost,” though I haven’t personally tested it. · 55:20 The boltshark didn’t exist when I made this guide. It has a Battle Frenzy perk that gives you a 50% movement speed bonus for 2.5 seconds after killing an enemy. · 55:26 With Season 3, that GK2’s Battle Frenzy got combined with Battle Cool, so now it gives you a 50% movement speed bonus and a spread recovery bonus after killing an enemy. · 57:08 General movement/kiting tip: If you watch really good players play, you’ll see that they always keep moving, they jump a lot, and they grapple a lot. These things combined will help prevent you from getting hit by enemies, and jumping in particular also helps prevent you from getting stuck on irregular terrain. Plus, jumping and grappling allows you to dodge in the vertical axis, rather than just in the horizontal axes like strafing does. You can also strafe while in the air, or “air strafe.” · 59:58 The boomerang didn’t exist when I made this guide. You can also throw a boomerang before getting grabbed and hope it gets the grabber/leech. · 1:14:09 @tddzyx7070 says you can ledge grab off silicate harvesters and lootbugs, though I haven’t tested that.
Since I can’t edit the pinned comment, I will add any new updates to this comment: • I don’t think any of the bugs I mentioned have been patched, but please correct me if I’m wrong. • One technique that everyone kind of already does intuitively: the scout scoop. When there are minerals scattered over the ground, you can grapple through them to pick them up quickly. • As the scout, it’s often best for you to avoid calling Molly away from your teammates, since you can grapple back and forth to Molly quickly, but they can’t. • This is another movement guide that came out after I posted mine, and I think it gives some good advice: ruclips.net/video/njGNigVOCU8/видео.html • There are some good fall damage-related tips in this guide ruclips.net/video/_Mg8dmpxrk0/видео.html, which came out after I posted my guide. • www.youtube.com/@cupnoodles7109 shows some really cool techniques on their channel. They also have a guide to avoiding fall damage and a huge list of tips and tricks on Reddit. I can’t share those URLs directly because RUclips doesn’t like external links and immediately deletes my comment when I try to share those links. Their Reddit username is “SheepHerdr,” though, so you can just search them on Reddit and look through their posts to find this stuff. • Check out this newer guide on bunny hopping ruclips.net/video/Wr0P4L76IvI/видео.html for a bunch of tips, including stuff about capped and uncapped speed boosts, how frame rate affects bunny hopping, and how overcharged winch is different for guests than for the host. • Also this newer guide on some more niche skills for modded difficulties ruclips.net/video/IVLHgmiSJQ4/видео.htmlsi=-tRagPEg-viPeCFs
Thanks for the many updates. I'd like to add that the first level of the grappling hook is more than -0.5, once you factor in the later choices. Once cool down is reduced by the other upgrades I always take, -0.5 is a greater improvement than the percentage you mentioned at first.
If you want to clip through the drop pod once the pod is called in rush to where the drop pod will land and you will find the hole that the drop pod lands in. Then use your grappling hook to grapple to the side of that hole right above where the drills of the drop pod will be when it lands. Once it lands let go of your grapple and jump through the drop pod until your inside. Bye bye molly.....it takes a lot of patience and practice but its very useful.
The fact this tutorial is more than an hour long and doesn’t feel overly verbose or artificially padded for extra time is amazing. Everything in this video is so well presented in such a cohesive way that I never once felt overwhelmed by all the information. I find myself coming back to this every now and again just because of how informative it is. Absolutely brilliant script and pacing.
Thank you so much! That's such a thoughtful compliment - especially coming from someone who makes great videos themself - and I really appreciate it. I'm glad the video doesn't feel boring or drawn out because I was definitely worried it would be once I realized how long it was getting, haha.
I wanna mention one thing about Cave Angels. I've done it a few times. As scout you can easily get a cave angel. Then fly it down to one of your teammates so they can use it. It's a neat thing to keep in mind.
Hahaha, yeah it's a "best of times worst of times" kind of class for sure, because you're usually either dying the least or the most, and never in between.
unironically true most of the time eventually. problem is i can't handle the pressure and literally panic and fall apart at that point >.> i wonder if these pro guys just developed the ability to be calm when the other 3 team are down and all eyes are on them as the team's last hope hahaha. torture.
@@thescoutpanda Haha yeah I often panic too, to the point of physically shaking a bit when I really don't want to lose the mission, but that's part of the excitement I guess
Thanks, Rock and Stone! It definitely took quite a long time, but it was fun figuring out how to film things in creative ways (recording all the voiceovers, on the other hand, was not fun).
@@Kwaark Haha good I'm glad that joke landed. I almost included a clip of Michael saying "my little angels" from Cafe Disco when I was talking about cave angels, but it didn't quite fit.
I wonder: what is it about DRG that attracts such talented creators? Seriously, I don’t think I’ve ever seen such consistently great video editing from any other community. Between you, Siirvend, Sniss, DRG Historian, etc. I feel like a kid in a candy shop here on DRG RUclips. (Edit) You missed a handy little trick with the auto-switch setting. You can stop it from switching by holding the interact button while you let go of the fire button. I learned this by accident while collecting high-up fossils.
Thanks so much! That's very nice of you to say. I did the best I could with this video and the cryo minelets video, but the real editing pro is Drilling in the Name of. I'm a big fan of the way he ties together live action stuff and gameplay.
And that's super interesting about hitting interact to cancel the auto-switch setting! There are so many little tricks with how you do your button presses (like how holding interact while riding pipes will make you stop at sections that need to be built or repaired). I hadn't played around with the auto-switch setting enough to really get the hang of it, I guess. I'll add this to the clarifications/corrections/updates comment once I make that!
@@MusNothus Alright, so I just checked to make sure I had all the details right, and I have 2 corrections to make: (1) I got things backwards. You press the interact button while holding the fire button. (2) It turns out that you have to interact _with an object_ (fossils, beer ingredients, etc.) So it’s not quite as useful as I made it out to be. It’s more of a strange little interaction than some crazy hidden tech.
Dude I was about to say the same thing like I’m very new to the game and any new game I get into I inevitably watch RUclips videos about it and the RUclips community surrounding DRG is so wholesome and ridiculously talented it’s amazing! Rock and stone!p
@@Astro939 I only play with a long-time buddy who has kids and way toooo busy life but it's all good. We both managed to promote a character and level up some others and get into the overclock end game. Still loving the game and all the flexibility in what you can play. I've even found driller to be immensely flexible even compared with scout sometimes. How's it going for you?
@@DevonTuck good to hear you're enjoying the game As for me, I'm lvl 800 so im almost done with all the content in the game. I'm only missing a few cargo crate skins. That's how long the grind is haha
One technique that I didn't see mentioned, is that if you are in a mission where you need to get a resource chunk or aquarq or something up a cliff, you can throw it upwards, grapple to the ceiling, and the catch it as you fly upwards.
Wow that is an awesome technique, thanks for sharing! I saw they removed the "super throw" (ruclips.net/video/ZbUwGOt0Yds/видео.html) with update 36 but that now you are able to pick up objects while in the air (ruclips.net/video/hn9R4UdP_Wo/видео.html). This wasn't possible when I made the guide (as far as I know) and I haven't really played around with it much yet, but I just jumped into a mission and tried it out, and you're right that's a great technique! I'll add that to my "updates" comment.
thats such a fun trick to pull off but i'm so bad at it. usually all i do is throw it up, miss the catch, or catch it and land back where i started like an idiot xD
32:15-32:52 is nuts. The choice of music (which is by far the best track in the game no competition) set to this epic scene frozen in time is phenomenal.
In my opinion, dash should be a permanent movement ability in the game. I run it on every class aside from scout and it just feels like it eats up one of the perk points, the other almost guaranteed to be medic or iron will. The perks need an overhaul
I strongly disagree, that would lead to player power creep like in Payday 2. They should just nerf dash or buff the other actives (without overdoing it)
@@Alex-xk1cl that can still Apply to having existing stuff in the game to become even more prominent/meta to use/do. Dash becoming something every dwarf can use without it being an active skill is a rather bad move, just makes more obvious how must have it is. To me: Berzerker needs to either have a small CD buff or better improve pickaxe dmg See you in Hell pickax dmg boost should last 3-5 seconds and the detonation on being downed should be a little stronger
@@MusNothus Wow, thanks so much. That’s very helpful, your video was amazing. Usually a video this long I would not watch but from the very beginning it hooked me. Jampacked full of info! Keep up the great work!
For anyone who's interested in more info on the ways I recorded stuff in this video, here's some more detail: I used to record gameplay with GeForce Experience, but it can only record two audio tracks and if I remember correctly will put your game audio incoming voice chat audio on one track, then the other track will be your mic, so there's no way to separate voice chat audio from game audio completely (there are some overly complicated things you can do with virtual audio outputs using voicemeeter or VB cable, but I found it to be unnecessarily complicated and still didn't get the result I wanted). So anyway, now I use OBS to record because you can very easily isolate game audio, your mic, and discord audio into 3 separate tracks, and it's free. If you do use OBS, this video is a nice explanation of how to set it up: ruclips.net/video/tCwjdNNv0L4/видео.html, and I found that you just have to have DRG in windowed fullscreen to make it work best (I can give more details on how to set that all up if anyone is curious). I do use GeForce Experience for the "Ansel" function, though. Ansel is actually meant for taking screenshots, but if you just hide the side panel and the mouse cursor, then you can record video the same way you would record regular gameplay. In a solo game, entering Ansel mode will freeze the gameplay, so that's how I got those freeze frame shots of the bulk detonator later in the guide and how I got the thumbnail. If you're not playing solo (i.e., even if you're the only player but didn't select solo so others can join), then the game doesn't pause so you can get live action shots. That's how I got a lot of the stationary third person shots in the guide. Ansel is really awesome, and it also has a ton of cool filters you can use. But Ansel does have some limitations. It can only move a certain range from the player using it, it can't "follow" players, and rotating it is done with the mouse so it's very hard to get that to look smooth (that's why for most Ansel shots I either keep the camera stationary or I only move it forward, back, or left/right because that's done with the keyboard and is smoother, but I rarely rotate when filming in Ansel). Better Spectator fills in a lot of those areas where Ansel is lack because Better Spectator can follow the player and you can get smooth shots panning from one player to another. It's really an awesome mod in general, basically allowing you to view other players when you're downed but with the ability to zoom in and out, rotate, and also pan between different players and entities like Molly, BET-C, and Doretta. It also removes the static video effect from the normal death camera. When it pans between entities, it also does so smoothly, which was very nice for filming. So, I used "Better Spectator" for a ton of shots in this guide. I also used it for the shots outside the space rig in this intro, by essentially zooming out on one character, then panning to the next, and then zooming in. And I used "Better Spectator" for some of the last shots in the guide like when I'm panning around a big cave in Magma Core, which I pulled off by spawning an additional MULE as an additional focal point for the camera, then hiding the MULEs with the "Spawn Menu" mod (drg.mod.io/spawn-menu), and then just panning from one MULE to the next and then to my dwarf. The "Spawn Menu" mod was also indispensable for making this guide.
You had me hook, line, and sinker with that badass intro. Of all the classes I gravitated to scout the most and had previously thought of myself as a grey beard. However, after all the knowledge you parted in this video the beard is definitely greener than I thought. I'm excited to level up my game considerably though so thank you for all the tips. Also, the office parkour skit had me dying laughing. Great video, rock 'n' stone!
Thanks so much! I realized the intro I made for the cryo minelets video was pretty boring (not Drilling in the Name of's part, but my part dancing in the Abyss Bar), so I figured this time I should try to shake it up.
Scout is my favourite class and I am experienced with it, so I knew most of tricks and methods. However, this guide was still helpful: it provided me with theroretical basis and hard numbers for a lot of things that I've been "eyeballing" and based my estimates on gut feeling. And I've picked up a couple of new tricks from the guide, so it was, all in all, helpful and surprisingly enjoyable experience. I commend manner of presentation and structure of the guide.
Thanks so much! I'm glad you enjoyed it. I honestly had a pretty similar experience in making the guide, because I was already doing the techniques but had never really carefully examined how they worked. There were also a number of things which I learned I liked a lot more than I thought I did, like momentum on the grappling hook.
Thanks so much! There are so many things in this game that I somehow didn't learn until hundreds of hours in. Like as an embarrassing example, I didn't know you could zoom the map in and out with the mouse wheel for a very long time...
If you can time a bulks detonation to explode where dreadnought twins spawn you can double kill them instantly after popping their egg. (I've done it twice, both times on haz 5)
On an egg mission we ended up with one in the middle of the ceiling, with us wondering how to get at it. Then the scout used the grapple and dug right in almost vertically and popped out with the egg in 5 seconds. I never knew what sorcery he used until now. Thank you for the explanation and I seriously doubt I'll ever be good enough to pull that off.
Haha nice! It's definitely one of those skills that just sort of "clicks" at some point, so you'll go from never being able to get it to all of sudden being able to get it. I believe in you!
Thanks! Yeah that was one of my favorite things to show. I think that might've been the thing that made me decide I wanted to do this whole guide in the first place, because I thought it was so cool and because it made me think of the idea for the intro, then I felt like I had to make it.
The grapple hook's 'Max Speed' stat works like this: (the normal walking/running speed is 300/435) The stat displayed is what your character's speed will be while being pulled When you release the key, your velocity is then cut by half
I wish hoverboots cut your vertical momentum but allowed your horizontal momentum to continue. It'd be really fun as a kind of general mobility perk alongside Dash, where you could use Hoverboots to extend the distance of a running jump OR cancel fall damage, or any number of things. The reason Dash is such a good and fun perk to use is because it lets you DO things with it. Dash can get you out of goop, run away from enemies, Clear a large gap, or cross a distance with a heavy object faster. Hoverboots on any class other than scout is basically JUST for negating fall damage, as they don't have ways to gain height organically to take advantage of the hover to make ledges. It has the potential to be such a fun movement perk and as it is it's just so thoroughly underwhelming.
Oh that is such an interesting idea, I've never thought about it that way. It'd be awesome if it locked your vertical position in place but then you could walk around horizontally while hovering, especially since you can burn bugs with it so you could walk over a crowd or slide over a crowd if it just maintained your horizontal momentum. That'd be such a cool addition to the perk and I don't think it'd be too overpowered to be viable, even though it could help other classes clear gaps easier.
Also being at a standstill if it happens during a swarm is asking for a few swipes to take you out, or getting hit by a projectile. I just use special powder to break my fall now if my grapple is recharging, or if I mistakenly grabbed a surface with my grapple that will result in fall damage, OR if I'm trying to get a hard to reach mineral vein but fail to land inside the alcove I made with a power attack.
Those lucky green and redbeards, being able to learn all these tips without hundreds of hours having to experiment, incredible video mate, also never knew you could cryo the leech like that I'll be definitely using that often.
Thank you! Yeah I found the cryo trick one time when I panicked hearing a grabber coming, then when I saw that that worked, I figured I'd try it on a leech too. I'd bet it doesn't always work if you don't get the timing right, but it's helpful since you don't have to figure out where they're coming from, but rather can just panic chuck a grenade at your feet when you hear their sound getting close.
This was so well done. Loads of great information, amazing presentation and cinematography. I have over 700 hours in DRG and Scout is my most played Dwarf and I still picked up some things I didn't know and some things I want to try more often. Thanks.
As a scout main I swear by expanded mineral bags. There are often times so many minerals on the ceiling and cutting down the run backs to Molly, especially when a dwarf thinks they own her, really speeds up mineral collection and helps you focus on the. Ossian objective
Yeah that's totally fair. Maybe since I have never used expanded mineral bags much I just don't know what I'm missing, but i just like the survivability upgrades.
This is *by far* the best DRG guide of any kind I've ever had the pleasure of watching. Just absolute top notch stuff. Thank you so much for taking the time to make this!
the thing about precision terror on m1k is that its a ridiculously powerful and cheap clutch tool in certain scenarios. Easily fearing almost everything away from a downed teammate just for focus shotting a completely still grunt is incredibly useful and has made so many clutch scenarios actually really easy.
This video may be long, but that intro really got me hooked. Edit: To add to the tip about freezing before getting grabbed, you can also grapple to something preemptively before being grabbed to escape. So if you are out of cryo grenades (or aren't running them) you can still escape cave leaches, etc as a scout.
Thanks! And that's a good point, grappling away probably is the best overall technique for avoiding getting grabbed, especially since it doesn't depend on your loadout, like you said.
I got all my dwarves to gold and now i'm watching all these guides online to optimize my playstyles. This is an incredible in-depth guide, thank you for making this! Addendum-- power attacking into the wall is something I've been grappling with forever. The whole angling issue is exactly what fixed my roadblock
Thank you! Yeah power attacking into a wall is such a weird technique and it can be so hard to tell why sometimes it works and sometimes it doesn't, but I'm glad it's working for you now!
It's funny, I've had that mod installed for awhile now and I was so excited to use it, and yet for some reason I've never turned it on. I really need to because that sounds awesome. I'm sure my left hand will love it.
An outstandingly comprehensive guide to all things movement on the scout. I just wonder if all those unintended features/bugs will stay, they don't seem to actually cause anything too busted.
Thanks! And yeah I wonder too. It seems like the doubling of beer buffs has been known for awhile and hasn't been changed, so maybe the developers decided that they liked it the way it was. There are definitely also certain bugs that I hope always stay, like the bug where scouts look like they're sprinting when they grapple.
the content, the effort, the levels of detail, and post production are stunning. this is a real tribute. thx for the passion in developing and delivering this content
It's been an entire YEAR since this came out, and I JUST unlocked Special Powder and Hover Clock. Almost level 200. God I love this game. Thank you for teaching me the way
Criminally underrated video and channel. I am over level 270 and run scout as my second most played class behind driller, and yet I learned a LOT watching this.
Everything in on this channel is great. But of Course if MusNothus is involved it's going to be EPIC. Great Stuff lads, two of the GOATS in DRG content right here. What a freaking squad that must be in the dives. GGS lads.
6:17 A reference for Scout's grapple speed. Driller's Spring Loaded Rippers have an internal speed of 1600, so if you go without the speed boost you'll be slightly slower than Spring Loaded Rippers, if you take the boost you'll be notably FASTER than Rippers. Obviously this is more important than just Rippers, but it's a good reference point for anyone coming to scout from Driller or anyone who plays with a Driller who likes to use Rippers. 40:10 Quickfire Ejector is actually completely useless. Due to how Rate of Fire works in DRG, you start reloading so much sooner after shooting, that you only actually gain a couple of frames from Quickfire Ejector. Great video, these are some real neat tips for me to use when I'm running around as Scout next
That is a really interesting comparison. Maybe someday we'll make a youtube short showing my scout grappling away from @DrillingInTheNameOf's driller as he throws a ripper at me, to demonstrate that with one mod I survive and with the other I do not. Also yeah I think I learned that quirk about RoF and reload speed after I made this guide, so I didn't realize that RoF factors into your reload speed in a way that makes some reload speed upgrades have slower reload times than just taking RoF boosts...so I guess I got lucky by not recommending Quickfire Ejector in this guide even if I didn't understand why!
I just started the game a couple weeks ago and kept dying alot, this guide definitely made things much easier traversing caves and made the game more fun than frustrating, ty
Thought you were insane for making a feature-length video about scout movement mechanics, but here i am watching the whole thing and eating it up. good shit
Haha no you're right, I am insane for making this whole thing. It just kind of snowballed, and I think if I realized how much work it was going to be from the start I probably wouldn't have done it. But I'm glad you liked it!
In regards to the grappling hook mods, I find that momentum helps with kiting enemies when you prefer a specific range, as while the bypassed integrity check bonus lets you grapple more often, the momentum lets you use your walking movement to maintain a fixed ideal range from bugs, useful for closer-range drak builds that want the speed boost to safely stay close, but not too close, to oncoming grunts. Of course, -1s cooldown is still very powerful, and the speed boost is less necessary for certain builds of gk2/zhukovs/drak.
Yeah momentum is definitely growing on me more and more since I made this video for the reasons you stated. I'm to the point now where I'm honestly not sure which of the two options I'm going to settle on for my main loadout.
Sitting at the 56 second mark and this is the first video of yours I have ever seen. Those first 56 seconds are awesome enough to join my very short list of subscribed channels.
This video was incredible! I pretty much exclusively play Scout and there was so much I didn't know about. Throwing a comment in to please the algorithm, I wish I could give more than one like too!
I've been slowly trudging through solo for the longest time until I kinda got stuck so I watched some vids and learned I didn't need to solo in this game. Also thanks for all the great tips slowly on my path to being a greybeard
Thanks! I felt like the intro a did for my cryo minelets guide with me dancing in the abyss bar was too slow and boring, so I tried to switch things up with this one.
I believe the glitch with using the grapple to get out of the drop pod only works if you're the client. I should probably also mention that using any glitch that puts you outside the drop pod while it's leaving will negatively affect the survival bonus. Even if you are still alive at the end.
Oh interesting, I'll have to test it out some more. I tried a bunch of different permutations like being host vs client (maybe it has to do with ping?), grappling to the ceiling vs back of the pod, grappling before others got in vs after, etc., but nothing seemed to work. It has definitely worked for me in the past, and I hope there's still some way to do it because I always thought it was fun. Though I definitely avoid actually leaving the pod if I'm playing with people I don't know so that I don't affect their payout.
Thank you! And I'm glad to hear the long run time wasn't a downside for you; I figured some people might very reasonably not want to sit through this long of a youtube video.
Thanks! All the credit goes to Drilling in the Name of for the majority of the videos, of course, but I was happy to contribute this one and the cryo minelets guide.
Giving a like and a comment solely for you petting the lootbug @ 20:30 No, but in all seriousness: great guide. I was confident with the grappling hook already but I've learned some new stuff over here. Big props. Also thanks for an idea and a loadout for the GK2. My favourite scout gun and that overclock seemed nice yet when I tried it, it felt underwhelming. I'll do it again with your loadout and see how it fares. Cheers!
Cheers and thank you! If you want more details on how/why I do my AI stability engine loadout the way I do, check out the link in the description to my Karl dot gg profile, where there's a link to my full explanation.
I just keep coming back to this and MusNothus’s Cryo Minelets guide. They are absolutely some of the most well made, informative, and enjoyable guide/tips and tricks videos I’ve ever seen. Thank you MusNothus and Drilling In The Name Of for these amazing videos. P.S. I’m aware these vids are over two years old now lol, but still, I just wanted to express how much I appreciate them. Rock and Stone!
@@MusNothus Hey great to hear from you man, thanks so much for replying! Pretty much all of what I’ve learned about how to be a better scout is from your two guides, so yeah, I really appreciate the time and effort spent to make them. I don’t know if you ever planned on doing more videos or guides at any point, but if you did I would absolutely love to watch them. Anyway, thanks again, and Rock and Stone!
@@sirsporty6556 Rock and Stone! There is a guide I'm thinking of doing, but man they're just so much work and take so much time that I haven't been able to bring myself to commit to it just yet. I think I will do it eventually though...
@@MusNothus Oh well that’s great to hear, and I completely understand how difficult and time consuming it is to make a video like that, so I get it lol. If you do end up making it then I’ll be one of the first ones watching it haha, but obviously take your time and don’t feel any pressure. Masterpieces can’t be rushed lol. Also, would you be able to give me a little sneaky spoiler of what the guide is about or is that classified information? 👀😂
@@sirsporty6556 Hmm, without giving away too much, it would be a guide on a weapon that would then transition into more broadly talking about an underlying game mechanic...
This taught me so much. I thought I had scout figured out and haven't even scratched the surface of how to get around down there. Rock and Stone, Miner. Next rounds on me!
Haha good I'm glad it's not a testament to how bad I am at being concise, but I definitely have never liked another game enough to put this much time into making a video about it.
There is one thing I noticed related to momentum mod on the grappling hook. If you use the perk dash while you are under the effect of momentum movement speed buff the ms bonus provided by dash will end at the same time the momentum movespeed ends. So basically your dash can get cancelled completely because of this bug. Anyway excelleng video! Keep up the awesome work, rock and stone!
Oh wow I just tested it out and that's super annoying. I can't even tell if dash and momentum's speed boosts stack or if it just switches you from the momentum boost to the dash boost. That's really good to know! I'll add that to my clarifications comment.
As someone who was once new to the game, this video alone inspired me to main scout and get him all the way up to Legend 3 in one season - not ego, not pride, just pure inspiration and willingness to learn from this made me dedicate my hours as scout. Since season 4 looks like it has new hoverboots, can’t wait for the scout mobility to become more versatile.
That makes me really happy to hear and is very nice of you to say! I'm glad the video was useful. Also yeah, I was just playing around with the jet boots in the season 4 experimental branch, and I half want to make a joke-update that's like 30 seconds long and says just use jet boots in place of everything I said in this guide.
Haha I'm glad it kept you hooked! I figured an 80 minute video would be a big deterrent, so I'm always happy to hear when people felt like watching it all the way through.
So I watched this video a couple of months ago and recently I've decided to do the 'Karl would be proud" achievement. So, haz5 (which honestly I'm not very used to, especially solo) no downs, no resups. Shortest Mining Expedition with Scout seemed like the best choice IF the game's rng wouldn't have decided to torment me that day. Well, the first swarm during the mission came with a Bulk. Ah shit, gg I thought. There's no way I'm going to not run out of ammo with a cave full of glyphids and that explosive bullet sponge, and there's not that much room to kite all the enemies and the Bulk AoE attacks while I defend and let Bosco's rockets deal with it. But then I remembered Bulk Smashing from your video, and WOW this strat is so goddamn good I wish I tried it sooner. Destroyed most of the swarm with a couple of those, at the same time keeping the Bulk covered in pheromones so bugs chipped at its life constantly, killed the last few bugs with Bulk's death explosion and wasted almost no ammo on the whole wave. Did the achievement first try thanks to you, Cheers mate!
Yeah honestly since making this video I now use momentum way more than I did before. I still don't always use it, but it's true that once you try it it's hard to go back.
A use I've actually found for momentum on grapple is that if you grapple close to the ground, it wont cancel second wind, and it also works WITH second wind (unlike how momentum eats your dash) this can lead to you having what is pretty much a dash active permanently, so long as you 1) never stop sprinting and 2) grapple alongside the ground its not particularly meta or anything, its really good for rushing to drop pod or kiting enemies though
Thanks! I realized the intro I made for my cryo minelets guide where I just talked over a static shot in the abyss bar was super boring, so I tried to take a different approach with this one.
Haha yeah it took me awhile to get a clip I was happy with for that, but I thought the timing of that was hilarious. Kind of reminded me of the "as you wish" line in Princess Bride when Westley is rolling down the hill.
I'd like to add a ,,maneuver'' I learned with the grappling hook, useful for carrying aquarqs (or really any heavy object) up cliffs. Throw the aquarq up the cliff, quickly grapple towards it and grab it mid-air. Then you either have enough momentum to get up, or you can throw it again in the air. I also recommend having your weapon equipped before throwing the aquarq and switching to the grappling hook after the throw. This is faster then having the GH already in your hand, and allows you to fly a bit further. Hope this helps!
I wish this trick had been possible when I made this video, but yeah this is a fun move! I didn't know that about having your weapon equipped, though; I'll have to try that out.
Corrections, clarifications, and updates from @MusNothus:
· Jet boots did not exist when I made this guide.
I explain why on a Karl.gg loadout page I made: karl.gg/preview/8933#/
· Cool flare technique: I wish I had included this in the video because it’s super useful and I do it all the time, but if you hit F to throw a flare while you are being pulled forward by the grappling hook, the flare will inherit your momentum and will move along with you.
You can also strafe while in the air, or “air strafe.”
· 59:58 The boomerang didn’t exist when I made this guide. You can also throw a boomerang before getting grabbed and hope it gets the grabber/leech.
· 1:14:09 @tddzyx7070 says you can ledge grab off silicate harvesters and lootbugs, though I haven’t tested that.
Since I can’t edit the pinned comment, I will add any new updates to this comment:
• I don’t think any of the bugs I mentioned have been patched, but please correct me if I’m wrong.
• This is another movement guide that came out after I posted mine, and I think it gives some good advice: ruclips.net/video/njGNigVOCU8/видео.html
• There are some good fall damage-related tips in this guide ruclips.net/video/_Mg8dmpxrk0/видео.html, which came out after I posted my guide.

I applaud you for responding with such a long comment on an old video
Thanks for the many updates.
I'd like to add that the first level of the grappling hook is more than -0.5, once you factor in the later choices. Once cool down is reduced by the other upgrades I always take, -0.5 is a greater improvement than the percentage you mentioned at first.
Hook's 4B actually triggers when you let go of mouse1, so you can get little speed boosts on the ground with it.
5:44 it would actually be from point A to point D since the grappling hook lets you skip B and C. :)

I wanna mention one thing about Cave Angels.
I've done it a few times.
As scout you can easily get a cave angel. Then fly it down to one of your teammates so they can use it.
It's a neat thing to keep in mind.
Oh interesting, I had never thought to wrangle cave angels for other dwarves, but that's a great idea!
the first time i did this, my teammate killed the cave angel. never again.
i never considered that, but usually i'm the only one who flies with them. i've even had people shoot my cave angels down :c
"Scouts are usually the most likely class to be the last player standing."
Not when I play scout.
Hahaha, yeah it's a "best of times worst of times" kind of class for sure, because you're usually either dying the least or the most, and never in between.
unironically true most of the time eventually.

@@thescoutpanda Haha yeah I often panic too, to the point of physically shaking a bit when I really don't want to lose the mission, but that's part of the excitement I guess

Ha! same. I mostly die from fall damage right after the thought *there's no ledge here*

@@MusNothus Alright, so I just checked to make sure I had all the details right, and I have 2 corrections to make:
(1) I got things backwards.

Thank you!
In my opinion, dash should be a permanent movement ability in the game. I run it on every class aside from scout and it just feels like it eats up one of the perk points, the other almost guaranteed to be medic or iron will. The perks need an overhaul
Yeah I can see an argument for that. It really is such a meta perk and so many people take it that maybe it should just be built in.
I strongly disagree, that would lead to player power creep like in Payday 2. They should just nerf dash or buff the other actives (without overdoing it)
@@croma2068 How is that power creep though, power creep is when new stuff gets added and the old stuff is much worse right?
@@Alex-xk1cl that can still Apply to having existing stuff in the game to become even more prominent/meta to use/do.
Dash becoming something every dwarf can use without it being an active skill is a rather bad move, just makes more obvious how must have it is.

See you in Hell pickax dmg boost should last 3-5 seconds and the detonation on being downed should be a little stronger
@@andrehashimoto8056 Making dash an abillity that every dwarf has and removing it as a perk is power creep?

What mods were you using the go into third person, disable bug spawns, get the sandbox tab on the left part of the screen, etc. great vid btw!
@@MusNothus Wow, thanks so much. That’s very helpful, your video was amazing. Usually a video this long I would not watch but from the very beginning it hooked me. Jampacked full of info! Keep up the great work!
For anyone who's interested in more info on the ways I recorded stuff in this video, here's some more detail:
I used to record gameplay with GeForce Experience, but it can only record two audio tracks and if I remember correctly will put your game audio incoming voice chat audio on one track, then the other track will be your mic, so there's no way to separate voice chat audio from game audio completely (there are some overly complicated things you can do with virtual audio outputs using voicemeeter or VB cable, but I found it to be unnecessarily complicated and still didn't get the result I wanted).
Did I hear a ROCK AND STONE ???
@@Art_Enthusiast Rock and Stone!
I have 500+ hours on this game and learned a LOT. (Like, I can’t believe the fall damage resistances stack, that’s insane.) Thank you!
I'm glad it was helpful! Yeah I was kind of blown away to learn that you could actually become immune to fall damage.
I just got my Legendary Miner achievement on ps5 and never knew Bulks hurt other bugs lol. I'm learning a lot. This really is a high quality guide.
This is how I imagine the scout in cannon just some crazy adrenalin junky who burrows himself into the cavern ceiling
That Bulk Detonator Hellfire attack tech is AMAZING!
Thanks! Yeah that was one of my favorite things to show. I think that might've been the thing that made me decide I wanted to do this whole guide in the first place, because I thought it was so cool and because it made me think of the idea for the intro, then I felt like I had to make it.
The grapple hook's 'Max Speed' stat works like this:
(the normal walking/running speed is 300/435)
The stat displayed is what your character's speed will be while being pulled
When you release the key, your velocity is then cut by half
Thanks.
Thanks a lot!
As a driller watching a driller centric channel?
This is a damned good guide. I'm glad for thecollab.
Haha thanks!
Thank you so much! That's very nice of you to say and I appreciate it.
the thing about precision terror on m1k is that its a ridiculously powerful and cheap clutch tool in certain scenarios. Easily fearing almost everything away from a downed teammate just for focus shotting a completely still grunt is incredibly useful and has made so many clutch scenarios actually really easy.
Yeah fear seems underrated in a lot of situations
This perfectly describes how I feel now that I've finally finished making this video: ruclips.net/video/tg2PD-dwsIw/видео.html
Damn duuuuude. Opened my eyes to the 'depth' of this game. R&S, thanks for all the hard work! ⚒
Rock and Stone!
11:32 there’s a mod available which enables sprint by default, turning shift into a walk button. It’s been an absolute game changer for me!!
You're welcome and thank you for saying that!
It's been an entire YEAR since this came out, and I JUST unlocked Special Powder and Hover Clock. Almost level 200. God I love this game. Thank you for teaching me the way
Nice! Enjoy flying around!
When use the gun, long string is shoot to move very fast.
Hahaha, you've accurately summarized in one sentence what it took me an hour and twenty minutes to say.
that beginning bit with the falling bug corpses goes harder than a out-of-control mosh pit at a death metal concert. fantastic work
Thanks! Yeah I love the way this game animates the ragdoll bug corpses, especially when they're killed by a bulk detonator attack and all go flying.
Criminally underrated video and channel. I am over level 270 and run scout as my second most played class behind driller, and yet I learned a LOT watching this.
Thanks I'm glad it helped! And yeah DITNO's got some great stuff on here.
Everything in on this channel is great. But of Course if MusNothus is involved it's going to be EPIC. Great Stuff lads, two of the GOATS in DRG content right here. What a freaking squad that must be in the dives. GGS lads.
Thank you! It's been a lot of fun doing stuff with DITNO.
Unreal video. So much information and you present it brilliantly.
Thank you!
Interesting comparison!
The intro is what made me sub. It’s just too good. Great job overall.
Thank you! The intro was probably my favorite part to film.
I just started the game a couple weeks ago and kept dying alot, this guide definitely made things much easier traversing caves and made the game more fun than frustrating, ty
Glad to hear it!
The detail in this video is insane. I learned a lot. Have started practising my wall power attacks now. Thanks for the video!
I'm glad you liked it!
Nice tips and cinematography. I definitely share your sentiments on grappling hook build, iron will, and drillers lol :D
Haha thank you!
Amazing production quality! This video should pop up as the scout lvl 25 promotion reward :)
Holy shit 80 minutes of scout content. This is insane.
Just want to say that rj250+ platform gun is incredibly fun
I agree about RJ250! No plans at the moment for a guide on that, but we do have something RJ250-related planned...
Thank you for spending your time to do all of this. I just started playing scout after maining engineer for about 30 hours and it's really helped.
You're welcome! I'm glad it was helpful.
@@MusNothus Extra points for more doom guy feel.
Sitting at the 56 second mark and this is the first video of yours I have ever seen.
Those first 56 seconds are awesome enough to join my very short list of subscribed channels.
Glad you enjoyed it!
This video was incredible! I pretty much exclusively play Scout and there was so much I didn't know about. Throwing a comment in to please the algorithm, I wish I could give more than one like too!
Haha thank you! May the algorithm gods be pleased.
I've been slowly trudging through solo for the longest time until I kinda got stuck so I watched some vids and learned I didn't need to solo in this game. Also thanks for all the great tips slowly on my path to being a greybeard
Rock and Stone! I'm sure you'll be a greybeard in no time!
masterfully made intro thats straight to the point
Thanks! I felt like the intro a did for my cryo minelets guide with me dancing in the abyss bar was too slow and boring, so I tried to switch things up with this one.
I read how fall damage worked and found this guide later on, I was very satisifed seeing you shoot down with the boomstick and instantly dying lol
Haha yeah I saw someone accidentally kill themself that way once and thought it was hilarious, so I had to fit it in
Extremely thorough and insightful video. Thanks a lot.
You're welcome, glad you liked it!
30:19 The most useful tip
It does look very cool
Well done Sir ! Maybe the most sofisticatet video of DRG i have ever seen.
Thank you very much!
Got my sub off of intro and the 1 hour long run time.
Idk how this doesn't have more views. Feels like a crime. This video just got better and better
Thank you! And I'm glad to hear the long run time wasn't a downside for you; I figured some people might very reasonably not want to sit through this long of a youtube video.
Scout is my least played class, but thanks to this guide I feel confident in playing it at haz5 thanks you beautiful dwarf

This is the greatest guide ive ever seen

Haha thank you!
What a legend, your videos are excellent and this guide is no exception. Keep up the great work!

Phenomenal vid man. Great work. TY. Was butchering the scout role before... pumped to learn the ropes and becoming an agile af scout. Cheers.
Thanks! I'm definitely not the best scout out there, but I love the class so it was fun to share.
Amazing work man, it's a very helpful video, I learned a lot thanks to it and it will definitely enhanced the way I play scout ! Cheers from France !

Giving a like and a comment solely for you petting the lootbug @ 20:30
No, but in all seriousness: great guide.
An absolute boss. The effort you put into this is staggering. Pimp.
Thanks so much! That means a lot to hear, and I'm glad you enjoyed them!
Rock and Stone!
Karl would approve this guide.
Thanks!
the fact this video is an hour and a half long is a testament to how good this game is
Haha good I'm glad it's not a testament to how bad I am at being concise, but I definitely have never liked another game enough to put this much time into making a video about it.
Thanks for the guide. I had a really bad experience playing Scout so this helps out a lot
Glad it helped!
This is so good! I Love your deep dive, learned to many things ! Thanks a lot. 😊
Learned way more from this than I would’ve revising 😅
Glad to hear it!
Many thanks for this exhaustive guide mate.
You're welcome! Thanks for watching!
My gosh, that into was like a chill batman movie

The power attack technique to chop a landing for yourself is called a "Karl's Ascent".
Oh that's very cool, I didn't know that!
@@MusNothus at least according to fans on Reddit haha
Great video, lots of good info for an up and coming scout, will defiantly implement it into my gameplay
Thanks!
I didn't expect to watch the full video, but I did.
That's awesome to hear! I'm glad it worked for you!
just wow! awesome work
Thanks!
That intro was pure amazing
Thank you!
I cannot play scout without the momentum upgrade on the grapple gun anymore it just feels so good and fluid.
Yeah honestly since making this video I now use momentum way more than I did before. I still don't always use it, but it's true that once you try it it's hard to go back.
Award best cinematic shot opening!
Thank you!
A use I've actually found for momentum on grapple is that if you grapple close to the ground, it wont cancel second wind, and it also works WITH second wind (unlike how momentum eats your dash)
this can lead to you having what is pretty much a dash active permanently, so long as you 1) never stop sprinting and 2) grapple alongside the ground
its not particularly meta or anything, its really good for rushing to drop pod or kiting enemies though
Oh that's really interesting! I'll have to try that out.
Fantastic content, it was an immediate sub for me. Hope more people recognize this channel.
Thanks, I'm glad you liked it and I hope you enjoy the videos coming up!
Excellent guide, I learned a lot! Keep up the good work!
Thanks! I'm glad it was helpful!
That intro is so dope tbh
Thanks! I realized the intro I made for my cryo minelets guide where I just talked over a static shot in the abyss bar was super boring, so I tried to take a different approach with this one.
that intro is super fkn cool, goddamn!
Thank you, glad you enjoyed it!
Always remember as a scout lighting up a swarm makes it easier for your teammates to see enemies.
1:06:00, "It was my pleasure" continues to plummet at terminal velocity down a fucking mountain.
Haha yeah it took me awhile to get a clip I was happy with for that, but I thought the timing of that was hilarious. Kind of reminded me of the "as you wish" line in Princess Bride when Westley is rolling down the hill.
Thank you very very much for making this.
My pleasure!
