You get the feeling Dalton is the only Rochester who actually read the book properly, or understood the character entirely. I've enjoyed other portrayals such as Toby Stephens, Michael Fassbender and Orson Welles, however there always seemed an element missing. For example Fassbender is too morose and drawling, and Stephens not dark and brooding enough. Dalton just nails the character in every way (except being a little too tall and handsome, but hey! It would be churlish to complain about that lol). He doesn't gloss over the character's flaws, he can be genuinely scary, volatile and manipulative, but in turn humorous, vulnerable, caring and passionate. Such a depth of understanding of the character and excellent interpretation and performance is just a joy to behold for lovers of the original book.
It's so hard to decide between Dalton and Toby Stephens. They're just...I LOVE BOTH PORTRAYALS OKAY but the ending for 2006 with Toby Stephens was rather much happier than this one and also how i imagine it in the book
100% agreed! You said everything I haven't been able to articulate - he is just THE Rochester for me. Yes, maybe he doesn't match the book's physical description 100%, but other than that, he is the best representation of him. He is the only Rochester for me.
I wonder if he currently realizes how much his role as Rochester is loved by so many of us. Over the years I’ve watched this and other versions. But his Mr. Rochester puts all the others far behind him. Love that they took the time to portray most of the book as opposed to the shorter versions.
I agree with you, he IS the perfect man for the job & O think she's the best Jane of all also. Does anyone but me get a bit of knotting knickers when they take the actual books and homogenize them; change the old English to a Readers Digest version? The classics should stay Classic. It's like the Pride & Prejudice w/Donald Sutherland...chickens strolling through the Bennetts Manor House? Seriously?!

Thank u for posting this best version of Jane Eyre. Timothy Dalton took my breathe away with his passionate portrayal in this role & every role he undertakes. I recently finished watching "Penny Dreadful". Although I loved its entire cast Timothy Dalton was the core irreplaceable character of that series as well as this one. He is always amazing to watch.
Just happened upon this 1983 version. I was blown away by the character actors, the set design, the pacing and especially the lead actors. In particular Timothy Dalton. He is amazing and may I say S-E-X-Y.
Ahh I remember watching this when I was around 12 or 11 years old. 15 years later "Jane Eyre" is still one of my favourite books of all time, and this is still my favourite film adaptation, most of the characters are exactly how I'd imagined them while reading the book for the first time. Tim is really unforgettable as Rochester ;-). Thank you for posting!
This is the first time I've ever seen this and I've enjoyed it so much. The casting was perfect and I was drawn in even by the setting and atmosphere. Excellent adaptation.
Such a powerful performance by Timothy dalton that anyone would imagine him as perfect personality for playing the character of Heathcliff in Wuthering Heights.
Thank you for posting the entire series in very good quality. I concur with the general consensus that this is indeed the best adaptation of a most treasured and beloved classic 👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻
The best version ever. But other versions are good in their own ways. It shows how enduring a story it is that so many renditions have been done of it. The no 1 love story ❤️❤️❤️ (and thank you for sharing it )
I have never heard of this before. A week ago one of my dear friend told me about it and I started to watch it yesterday and i finished it today. Such a marvelous mini series. I love it. Made me cried at times, just love it.
I love this adaptation so much more than the crass and loud Orson Welles. And that's saying a lot considering the man was a fantastic actor! BUT...Timothy Dalton was my favorite James Bond and there was always something dark and brooding about him. He was well cast in this role. Thank you for this. It's lovely. I'll watch it again!
Mine too! Shame he only did 2 Bond movies. He's overlooked as Bond, I remember he brought a new excitement and sexiness compared to Roger Moore's aging Bond. Forget that one in between.
Wha an epic film and mind-blowing acting, Timothy Dalton in particular. I'm actually in two minds whether or not watch the other versions. But I'll definitely read the book once more. Thanks for uploading this series.
The actress playing Jane eyre is good and emotional and passionate but she looks so classic. I suppose it was her hat and dress and the lack of make up .She was dressed in a victorian style and looked older but i think that many women had this style. Timothy dalton is gorgeous as for him even with his hideous eye..lol! It is a brilliant scene anyway.Thanks.
Not another held this distinction of being its film's depiction of this complicated story so remiss and wrought with angles so tangled to be revered for generations to come!
I LOVED every second of this series, perfect! the actors do such a superb job!! Thank you!! outside from the blind part, it is the perfect ending, true love is when your heart trespasses any mundane circumstance, when your very soul IS this love, when you're "flesh of each other's flesh" ❤❤❤ can't stop crying here 😭😭😭😭😭 thanks for uploading 😍😍😍😍
Absolutely. The character of Jane is a woman who understands that love in its highest form is selfless to the extent that it actually derives genuine, profound happiness from giving without requiring a return but that it does not mean giving up your sense of self -- your needs, your feelings, your self-respect, your values. The highest form of love also demands that you fully acknowledge the other person's right to their own needs, feelings, choices, and values even if you might not understand or agree with them. This is where Rochester makes a grievous mistake with Jane. He admires her for her gentle, compassionate nature because most of the people he has known have been self-serving whereas she is selfless. However, the stronger his emotional investment in her becomes and the greater his desire to have her in his life, the more he loses sight of who she really is and what her needs are. By choosing to avoid telling her he is married, he ironically and inadvertently ends up doing the same thing to her that his father and his brother did to him even though his motives are better than theirs were (since he sincerely believes that he loves Jane and that she will be happy with him). Their relationship in the beginning is doomed from the start because it's based on a lie. Rochester, by withholding information from her, manipulated her into making the choice which was best for him and convinced himself that it would be the best for her as well when it would have been anything but. If the news had come out after Rochester married Jane that he was already married, he would most likely have been arrested. Their marriage would be declared invalid and she'd almost certainly have been ruined both professionally and socially.
the best ever adaptation!!!! the other one 1997 was so baad. but this -dalton .wow. i mean he should have been the permanent actor for heathcliff, darcy,mr tinley and all other tall dark and handsome guys.
"...1997 was so bad. ." AGREED! I started to watch that dog and was appalled at all the short-cuts it took in the dialogue and plot/character development. It undermined all the subtlety of the dynamics between Jane and Mr. R. Glad to found this one. One of my all time favorite heroines. Thanks for posting.
Hahaha, here is when he takes retribution for his Ingram's maipulations. Here he is subjected to the same game, hehe and has tu suffer what she suffered with Blanche. Great scene.
Agree with you, only i love the outdoor scene in the book more as Jane was sitting on Mr Rochester's knee, and bantering back and forth about St. John. That scene was far more cute in my head as i read it in the book, and I was a bit disappointed when i see that Jane are not on his knee in this version.
I've just watched the whole series. It's absolutely perfect! What a sublime adaptation with wonderful acting. The atmosphere is just as it should be and the whole cast are unmatched.
It is a great adaptation and quite faithful to the book. The only issue, as with most of the the film and tv adaptations, is that Rochester is not supposed to be a handsome man.
As Colin Firth is the only true Mr. Darcy so is Timothy Dalton the only true Mr. Rochester. Confirmation of this is the fact that I still remebmer his role today. That why I watched this series again today. But now I see Zelah is very, very good too. Bravo.
7:55 he looks HOTTER than ever with the shaggy hair! 19:31 "Am I hideous, Jane?" "Yes sir, you always were you know." ARE YOU BLIND, JANE???? Anyway... This is the CLOSEST and most accurate adaptation of the book. It really stuck to the original novel and the story. Majority of characters (overwhelming majority) looked the way the were described as in the book in their looks, coloring, stature and age. Costuming was spot on and the settings were again, close to the books driscription though Thornfield was a mite too cheerful looking. The best actors were definitely Timothy Dalton as the refined, moody and very passionate Mr. Rochester - my only complaint was that he sometimes OVER-acts/stage-acts...still, his performance was excellent overall. He brought this gentlemanly yet roguish quality. He was mannered yet you can feel the passion running through his veins. Definitely a great choice for the character and one of the BEST Rochester's I've ever seen. FAR too handsome...but I'm not complaining! (And Dalton truly is a terribly handsome man and his voice and stature - yaaas!) The other stand out was the man who played St John Rivers. He did a truly masterful job of really embodying the coldness, the reserve - the ice of his character as in the book. Not only that, but he looked closest to how he was described in the book - like a deathly marble, blond statue. The best St John I've seen in ANY J.E adaptation. I have to be honest though - Jane was the letdown in this. At times I felt she was fine, but looking back at the full performance...she was too mousy, quiet and emoted far too little. She lacked passion - and next to Dalton with his flair for dramatics, she was like a pale little shadow. Lookswise she was a good choice (though a trifle too old) but the acting, the range and emotion was lacking. She was far too repressed unfortunately and it shows. I also did NOT like the silly soundtrack! Whomever composed the score for this adaptation feel short...greatly! The music was laughable at times and came across as dated and (most humorously) cheesy. There is not one piece that is memorable or likable in the score - such a shame, because a good backing score would have only added to the miniseries! Overall, this was a great adaptation of Jane Eyre, I did enjoy it regardless of my complaints - thanks a lot. I'll give it an 8/10. It is now tied for first place with the 2006 adaptation which I strongly recommend for another superb telling of the book.
Sarcastic Sugar I agree with your opinion. Rochester and St John were portrayed according to the novel, but Jane’s character, although good, lack of emotion. But I still think this version is the best Jane Eyre, much better than 2006, if you think it’s tied.

The 70's version is great too. The worst adaptation to date is still the 1934 version hands down.
@@jeanthree I see you in every comment insisting it's not the best, why are you watching it so religiously then?
So powerful..............So much passion in this version. Such a great tale of indomitable love.......
This is the best Jane Eyre movie I've ever seen!
You're welcome!
yes, thank you!
gematria79 Very true. What a Darcy he would've made.
gematria79 z I disagree Toby Stephens version 2006
I've never seen "Penny Dreadful" but it sounds right up my alley. Not available on RUclips. sigh.
Just happened upon this 1983 version. I was blown away by the character actors, the set design, the pacing and especially the lead actors. In particular Timothy Dalton. He is amazing and may I say S-E-X-Y.
It's a very good and faith adaptation of the book.
bravo monsieur T Dalton quel acteur formidable👍👍👍
Tears still falling down after 20 times watching. Such the emotional love! Thank you for posting the movie
You're welcome!
Oh god...it's so Beautiful...still, aged 61, I hold out for a love as passionate as this.Bone of each other's bone. Flesh of each other's flesh.
You're welcome!!!
Ditto to everything you said!
Just love it !!!! The most romantic love story ever , have read the book more than hundred times !!!
This is the miracle I was looking for!!!!
This is the 6th time watching this :))) After watching all the other versions this one is by far my fav. See you next year.
This is the first time I've ever seen this and I've enjoyed it so much. The casting was perfect and I was drawn in even by the setting and atmosphere. Excellent adaptation.
Wow.. This drama is even older than me, but it's amazingly beautiful. I'm almost speechless.! ❤
TD is unique! Both in this role and any other he undertakes. Simply the best!
Amazing series, perfect casting effortless acting.....best Mr. Rochester👌
I soooooo wish he played Mr. Darcy!!!
Taylor Corbin Oh dear God! I would have melted.
Colin Firth is great too
@@annaCMW19 nah, Matthew Macfadyen had the epitome of mr darcy. therefore he's far superior ;)
Thank you souch for sharing this exquisite tv series
Perfect mr Rochester. Love you. This is the best Jane Eyre version.
Best jane ayre version ever, very captivating.
What an absolutely wonderful way to spend a lazy Sunday. Thank you SO much for uploading.
You're welcome!
Reader, I married him.
Such a powerful performance by Timothy dalton that anyone would imagine him as perfect personality for playing the character of Heathcliff in Wuthering Heights.
amresh KUMAR he did
He did
he did 1970. One of his first movies.
Great work Timothy Dalton, and all set players. Love this story when done right.
Best reunion of all English Literature.
This is perhaps one of the most exquisite and beautiful performance by Dalton and Clark on Charlotte Bronte' literary masterpiece Jane Eyre.
You're welcome!
Mine too! Shame he only did 2 Bond movies. He's overlooked as Bond, I remember he brought a new excitement and sexiness compared to Roger Moore's aging Bond. Forget that one in between.
Sad the second Bond movie he did came out when Batman did
Great love story , such a great movie! Thanks for sharing it.
Wha an epic film and mind-blowing acting, Timothy Dalton in particular. I'm actually in two minds whether or not watch the other versions. But I'll definitely read the book once more. Thanks for uploading this series.
You're welcome!
Best adaptation I've seen so far. Loved Dalton as Rochester. Now I gotta re-watch episode 8.
Excellent work and breathtaking adaptation.
Frenchie séverine Yeah, she's not the best for the role to me...
Timothy Dalton is the most handsome Mr. Rochester.
and funny enough he was Heathcliff in Wuthering Heights
Michael Fassbender
I thought Sir Laurence Olivier was Heathcliff
Abinash Mishra Yes he was in1939.T.Dalton,Ralph Fiennes,Tom Hardy were also Heatchliff. For me R.Fiennes was the best.
Not another held this distinction of being its film's depiction of this complicated story so remiss and wrought with angles so tangled to be revered for generations to come!
Timothy Dalton is the best for Mr.Rochester 💖💖👌👌
I LOVED every second of this series, perfect! the actors do such a superb job!! Thank you!! outside from the blind part, it is the perfect ending, true love is when your heart trespasses any mundane circumstance, when your very soul IS this love, when you're "flesh of each other's flesh" ❤❤❤ can't stop crying here 😭😭😭😭😭 thanks for uploading 😍😍😍😍
Would you agree that this masterpiece asks the very questions humanity fails to posit when seeking true love? Even today?
Yes. Most true. Today passion / sex comes first and is misinterpreted with love.
Their marriage would be declared invalid and she'd almost certainly have been ruined both professionally and socially.
just got back from my Novel exam
this novel will be forever in my heart.
the best ever adaptation!!!! the other one 1997 was so baad. but this -dalton .wow. i mean he should have been the permanent actor for heathcliff, darcy,mr tinley and all other tall dark and handsome guys.
I wish he played Mr. Darcy.. He would've been perfect !!! and I do agree that this is the best adaptation , the acting was/is amazing.
And James Bond - the best Bond ever!
At least a version wich told the whole story. 👍
Isn't it great! Much of it is almost word for word! We just miss the period of engagement really.
Timothy Dalton is the best Rochester ever ❤❤❤
Best adaptation of the novel by "Jane Eyre"!!!
Thank u for the best version of Jane Eyre
ngan thach You're welcome!!!
"am I hideous Jane?"... "Yes sir, you always were you know"
Thank you for that version of Jane Eyre. Each of them, starting 1943, is a true piece of art. A treasure for humanity.
You're welcome!
I love the last words before it ended! :')
Timothy Dalton is the best Rochester!
Bertha burned the house down because she couldn't get a Wi-Fi signal in that attic room.
Understandable
Such a compelling story...and enjoyable.
Good acting too.
John. That scene was far more cute in my head as i read it in the book, and I was a bit disappointed when i see that Jane are not on his knee in this version.
watched this version over the years many times
Thank you for this. I had never seen this version and enjoyed it very much.
You're very welcome.
Bravo.
best movie and performance i ever seen Rochester is very good actor
At least once eye must be left ,for him 😢😢
7:55 he looks HOTTER than ever with the shaggy hair!
19:31 "Am I hideous, Jane?"
"Yes sir, you always were you know." ARE YOU BLIND, JANE????
(And Dalton truly is a terribly handsome man and his voice and stature - yaaas!)
The other stand out was the man who played St John Rivers.
She was just teasing him when she said that.
@sarcastic sugar, Oh how i laughed with your comment!!!! I thought the same thing!
Sarcastic Sugar I agree with your opinion. Rochester and St John were portrayed according to the novel, but Jane’s character, although good, lack of emotion. But I still think this version is the best Jane Eyre, much better than 2006, if you think it’s tied.
Do you know the 1973 adaptation? The best for mě...
Beautiful and the best adaptation, I agree. I get the feeling that Charlotte Bronte is imagination herself, but in another life.
2024 Timothy Dalton where have you been all my life - im 34
Thank you so much for sharing 🌹❤️😊
5000 pounds is about 2 million now, enough to keep Jane comfortable for life.
best adaptation by far
I’m back 4 years later just to say this version is still the best and I will rewatch again and again
