    What's interesting is that David was supposed to play a Russian scientist at first, but he didn't quite like it, but liked to play a part in the show, and suggested that the part could be Czech instead, and show producers actually agreed. They let him speak Czech on set while shooting, which gave it realism. I'm grateful for this, because in the pilot, you can actually see a large amount of people coming through the gate to the city, and I'd say that it could be easily well over 100 scientists. It definitely shows that there is a large number of people from around the world. Czech scientists actually have their place in international projects in real life as well, Czechia is one of the leading countries with international scientific research, so it does make sense that someone from Czechia would actually go on a mission like this. David Nykl gave it the realism it deserves. The fake accent sounds so realistic and natural, and the rant in native language sounds so realistic and natural. David is probably the only one from the entire cast that knew how to fake the accent properly so it sounds realistic and natural. David is actually fluent in English and speaks entirely without accent. That's what most people may not really know, if they've only seen him as Radek Zelenka. What most people also may not know is that David is best friend with the actor who potrayed Rodney in real life. They always appear on screen in this show with rivality and mutual hatered, but in real life they're actually best friends and one would do anything for the other. They also keep close contact with their fans, which is another aspect I like about them.

    • @ThorX89
      @ThorX89 Год назад +3

      It does sound a bit put on and like he could speak without it. Same with the supposedly Russian guy on SG-1 (Chekov). They both have very North-American sounding intonation to their sentences and just the pronunciation is a bit skewed towards the Czech/Russian sound palette.

    • @zorakj
      @zorakj Год назад +5

      His family immigrated to Canada from Czechoslovakia when he was very young. And he speaks Czech for real, along with English, French and Spanish.

    • @afiiik1
      @afiiik1 10 месяцев назад +3

      It's not a-typical for a Czech speaker to put on English intonation while still being too lazy to pronounce everything properly - I know several people who speak like that. It is also quite common to oscillate between British and American vocabulary and pronunciation.

    • @sirien.neiris
      @sirien.neiris 3 месяца назад +3

      not that he "didn't like" playing Russian - as he himself told the story, they were auditioning for a Russian speaking actor. Guy came into the room and asked "does anyone here speaks Russian?" to which David replied "I do speak Czech", which lead to "that is what?" and "something like Russian" and he was hired and the character was changed to match his known language.
      (The thing was they didn't have Czech arm-flag for uniform in the warehouse so they shot him the whole first season only from left side where there is a SGA armflag - they got themselves a Czech flag for next seasons though)

    Ah yes, our dear lovable Zelenka LOL! He was priceless. I liked his grumbling more than I did McKay's. Those who didn't understand what Radek was saying, could still relate to his frustration. I absolutely loved that they used lines in in David's real native language. It added a much needed realism that you'd find in an actual international project in real life, instead of everyone magically speaking perfect English with an unidentifiable accent. I didn't understand any of it until now, but it makes it so much better now that I do from this video.

    • @CrotchetRest
      @CrotchetRest 3 года назад +19

      It's funny that you mentioned perfect English with an unidentifiable accent, because that's exactly what an actor David Nykl in fact has. :-D His family moved to Canada when he was 2 years old, so he learned perfect English and thus actually had to LEARN the Czech accent for SGA. :-D Also, afaik he was originally supposed to play a russian scientist, but when writers found out he speaks fluent Czech, they changed their mind.

    • @StormsparkPegasus
      @StormsparkPegasus Год назад +4

      @@CrotchetRest You're mostly correct, although David himself said that the Czech accent comes naturally to him since he speaks the language - he didn't have to learn it. Although you are correct in that he doesn't have the accent normally, he has to intentionally do it. He was raised in Canada by Czech parents, so he grew up basically perfectly bilingual.

    Not just because it's funny, but because it still conveys a healthy respect for the show's own setting; not forgetting the humanity in science fiction; that he can step back from the science of the place for a moment and still be in awe of something powerful, unique, and beautiful, in ways the audience can relate.

Yet, if you cut of every single word and say them after each other, it will still be perfectly understandable czech. Unlike for example french our words usually do not change. I know I’m 8 years late, but I took the Czech subtitles and put them in Google translate, obviously I know Google translate isn’t the best but this is what it came out as: “I won’t deal with it. They can screw it up. It’s totally worth it.”

    • @sirien.neiris

      @@BriesMlb_ you didn't need to bother, 8 years ago I was literally translating it for others :)
      4:09: I will not work with him
      4:11: fuck this shit
      4:12: this is totally fucked
      4:13: is this wor... [worth it to me?, but the sentence is unfinished]
      Czech swearing vocabulary is way richer than English so the translation is somewhat approximate. Here is literal translation if you wish:
      4:11: to the arsehole with this (pretty common, yet pretty strong/vulgar expression in Czech)
      4:12: this is in(side) a cunt (another pretty common and pretty strong/vulgar expression in Czech)

    • @sirien.neiris
      @sirien.neiris 3 месяца назад

      @@BriesMlb_ oh my. You didn't need to bother, my old post was literally a translation of what he says. I've just posted more detailed line-by-line translation with some explanation to used expressions, but it seems I was too vulgar so either it waits for an approval or it was deleted altogether, sorry.
      The subtitles / Google Translation are way too... soft compared to what is actually said in this part, David is quite pushing it in that rant :)
      EDIT: and innacurate. Proper non-vulgar translation would be:
      4:09: I won't work with him any more
      4:11: I don't need to give a damn about this (this is way more vulgar in original, something about shaving it into the hole in back part of the body)
      4:12: this is pretty damned (this is also way more vulgar, something about everything being inside woman genitalia)
      4:13: is this worth it to me? (this sentence is cut in half, but he uses very specific expression so I know for sure he was about to say this)
      both of these vulgar expressions are common in Czech - and pretty strong

    • @CZghost

      We swear only then, when something quite upsets us (which is pretty much every time), but no, we are no curse speakers :D :D
      Although, I'm certain that in other countries, it is quite similar to us. You see? In a PG or Adult rated movie, people swear a lot more than in family friendly shows, even in your own movies and TV shows that are PG rated. That's similar to our TV shows and movies. You won't encounter a curse word in family friendly show, and if there is such word, it's usually beeped out during mainstream broadcast. A PG rated movies are not broadcasted before 10 pm. After that deadline, broadcast isn't censored anymore, up until morning hours again. Something similar is in USA, right?
