Filmmaker Mohsen Makhmabaf is one of the frontrunners of Iranian post 1979 cinema. For the viewing of his film 'The Gardener' (2012) which he made together with his son Maysam, he was on the 42nd International Filmfestival Rotterdam. There we interviewed them.About his film which was made in and around a Bahai Garden in Haifa.
Short Bio: Mohsen Makhmalbaf was born in 1957. Was imprisoned under the regime of the former Shah. Became a proponent of the Iranian revolution and was one of the fist filmmakers that could film under Islamic regime. He was the writer of some 30 books, maker of some 20 highly acclaimed films and teacher in his own Makhmalbaf Teheran Film school. Through the years he became more and more critical of the regime. With the coming of the renewed conservative regime of president Ahmedinejad in 2005 he left the country. Since that time he continues his work outside Iran. Also his wife, their daughters Hana ('Budda collapsed out of shame') and Samira ('The Apple') and his son Maysam ('The Gardener') are known filmmakers.

The comments of Mr Makhmalbaf is very illuminating and encouraging. It is this power of cinema and visual art that will eventually play an important role in liberating and educating the masses not just in Iran but all around the world.
Religion has always meant to be the medicine that heals and makes human civilization whole. Religion is only useful if it make us better human beings, increase our humanity and liberty from our own selves and be the cause of unity and harmony.

I find his softly lamenting and stating the facts and lovingly complaining style while telling a very painful story about the condition of the world and the shameful plight of the Baha'is of Iran and violation their human rights, is very effective and it influences the heart of the sincere.

اندفاعة السّلالة الحاكمة في الرّباط إلى فرض سياسات التهوّد والتطبيع مع الكيان العبري على الشعب المغربيّ، امتدت من فضاءات السياسة والعسكر والاقتصاد إلى عالم السينما أيضاً، بعد مشاركة رسميّة من الوزن الثقيل في مهرجان الأفلام الإسرائيلي المنسوب لحيفا المحتلّة، مثّلت الثقل الدوليّ لتظاهرة حكوميّة عبريّة طالما عانت من تجنّب السينمائيين العالميين والعرب لها، خصوصاً في أجواء عدوان إسرائيلي لا يتوقف على المدن العربيّة في الضفة الغربيّة.

He was my brother’ friend, before revolution, he was one the most active religious, Islam, against current government, Reza shah, 😂😂😂😂😂 , what has happened to him? He and his flew changed our country to this mess... , I just have one question please come back and answer and give us , return our freedom... ; my brother was communist, fought for people, a lot of them were killed by Islamic Iran government... , my brother said he saw me by accident, Mr Makhmalbaf, but he frowned and went away...... really my generation want our freedom back, which you destroyed it 😔😔😔😔

Was this not the guy who attacked a police during the Shah's time and having robbed his gun, joined the revolutionary islamists? Now he ran away and makes films! I am totally disappointed with Iranians!

Makhmalbaf is a Persian Jewish surname and apparently Makhmalbaf is tired of pretending to be a Muslim and wants to come back to his roots.
