  • The second edition of the Jody Jazz DV 7* vs Theo Wanne Durga 4 (size 8) series! It has been a few months since I originally purchased the new Theo Wanne mouthpiece and wanted to follow up with the improvements I've made and why I feel I will most likely stick with the Theo Wanne mouthpiece moving forward. The main issues I've ironed out since opening include resistance (from the reed), altissimo, and overall performance.
Thank you to everyone who commented on the previous video, I would love to hear your comments again. As stated in the video, I hope to do at least one more video on this topic, and get a hold of a Jody Jazz DV in the same size to see if I can get similar results! If you've had experience performing on both I'd love to hear your thoughts! 🎷

Dude nice sound! I was a saxophonist in the Marine Corps and when someone ordered the Gaia 2 I was like "Why would you spend that much on a mouthpiece?" ... Then I ended up being the one in the brass band and got to play it. Can't wait to get some Theo Wanne mouthpieces for my own setup.

Thanks so much! I appreciate you checking out the video 🙏 that's awesome you played in the Marine Corps band! It's definitely pricey, but so far I have no regrets as I absolutely love it 🎷

I’ve heard that the Durga 4 increases the compressed air before the air hits the saxophone by shrinking down the boar after the large chamber. This creates more power, but at the same time it also increases the resistance of the mouthpiece. This may be why your you’re experiencing more resistance and having to move to a softer reed. Also the Java reds are a little bit stronger than the Java greens. You may want to try those.

Thanks for the insight! The power on the Durga is one of the biggest strengths in my opinion, I think having a wider facing contributed as well, but I'm looking forward to trying a new brand of reed! It's been about 7 years on the Vandoren red box 🎷

Great videos! It's always interesting to me when players claim one mouthpiece as better than others, like it's actually a real thing. What I mean is, not many players talk about finding their sound concept in a given mouthpiece. I'm glad for you that the Theo Wanne allows you to get closer to the sound you're looking for in your head. I really like playing both the DV and Durga, and switch back and forth depending on the sound concept I have in my head. To my ear, the Durga has a bit more cut while the DV is a bit rounder and a bit more complex. If I want an even more round/complex sound, I go with a Drake Boney James. Of course, that's with my lungs, throat, mouth, mouth, etc (which I believe makes a bigger difference than the mouthpiece). I don't know about the rest of you, but my main motivation for switching between mouthpieces is I can get bored with my sound. By the way, the BSS and Rigotti Wild cane reeds are excellent for your style of play. Most recently, I've been getting into the Legere American Cut. They sound a lot like the BSS and Rigotti Wild reeds, but they're completely consistent and maintenance free.

Honestly the best comparison would be the Jody jazz super jet in an 8 vs the Theo Wanne Durga 4 in an 8

Hey bro, thanks for doing this review. I just bought the Durga 4 in pursuit of a brighter, more rounded tone coming from my Otto Link STM 7*. I play a Mauriat 66RUL, which is a pretty dark horn from my experience, so hopefully the Durga will give me the brightness and edge I need.

Try working 3 1/2 down with either sand paper or tool like reed geek. Harder reeds also last longer. I find BSS reeds a little stronger than same rating on vandoren reds. I switched from reds to bss on alto recently. I went down a half size. They’re little more colorful with darkness but vandoren reds are really centered and sound good in low end.

You're comparing a JJ 7* to a Wanne 8? Not a balanced comparison. With that said, I switch from JJ to Wayne. It was no contest.

I loved my DV when I had it. That's the sound I want, it just blew really sharp for me in the higher register, plus having to use a two-by-four as a reed was annoying. I have the durga and gaia both now and keep flip flopping back and forth, so I might give something else a try. The durga is too loud for most situations, and the gaia just doesn't have quite enough punch.

If you’re going for a Theo wanne Durga mouthpiece, I’d recommend a 8 tip opening (.110) or a 7*(.105) those are generally the tip openings most people prefer. Definitely get 2.5 and 3 strength reeds to decide which combo is best.

Durga gets a huge edgy and powerful sound while still having body and core. If that’s the type of sound you like, definitely go for the Durga!

Kenny, great video! The facing on Jodys mouthpieces makes a difference. I was using a Jet 7 and it was a huge struggle. I had pretty much stopped using that one and was just using my Daddario Jazz Select 8 and the V16 T9 I got at the retreat. But very recently I managed to find a Jody Jazz Jet tenor 8. Huge huge difference. I've been going back and forth between the Jet 8 and the Daddario. Probably going to play the Jet full time.

Thanks Jamie! And thanks for your insight, I've heard great things about the Jody Jazz Jet and would like to try that one out for a potential rubber mouthpiece and specifically jazz related gigs 🎷

No F-ing way. Theo Wanne pieces are way overpriced. Tom Scott plays a Jody Jazz and that's good enough for me.
