Sleeping giant: How Canada became a global energy power

  • Canada's oil history dates back to the mid-1800s, when the rich commodity was first discovered here. It would take almost a century for the discovery that would change the way we live, and uncork Alberta's vast oil wealth, when the first Trans Mountain pipeline came online in British Columbia - which moved oil to the province from Alberta.
As Eric Sorensen shows us, it was immensely popular in B.C., serving the economic interests of the province with cheap, accessible oil.

The entire energy sector shared by only 38 million people. Canadians should be the wealthiest people on Earth. Government mismanagement is the sole reason we are not.

Canadian oil is not as profitable as Saudi Oil and never will be. Saudi extraction cost are about 15 dollars a barrel. Canadian extraction costs are 55 to 62 dollars a barrel. The price of oil has to be 62 dollars a barrel just for Canadian producers to break even. That’s because Canadian oil isn’t oil. It’s tar sand. Saudi oil can just be pumped out of the ground. Canadian oil has to be mined and a ton of sulfur and sand needs to be removed before it can be sold. It poor quality heavy oil. That’s just how it formed millions of years ago. It’s got nothing to do with government mismanagement. Canadian oil will never be the cash cow it’s been to the Saudi’s. If you knew anything about the industry you should know that.

@@johnmcguire678 US: Currently, the federal government levies a $0.184 per gallon tax on gasoline.
Canada: federally Its 10 cents per litre and 5% GST. And there are 4 litres in a gallon.
Thats just what both feds charge. Then the provinces and states both do and take a bigger cut. + sales tax. In Canada Vancouver Victoria and Montreal also apply an extra one. Not to mention all the taxes paid before a drop ever leaves the pump into your car. The taxes refinery pays, the trucker who drove it there. The gas station who owns the pump and even the guy behind the counter taking your money. Its taxes upon taxes upon taxes. See how that works? Now maybe you can be less ignorant and open your eyes.

The issue is that we can buy it for far cheaper than we we can produce it ourselves. Largely in part to our wages being livable compared to other countries that are large producers, and the fact that we have heavy crude oil that’s significantly more expensive to refine.

Oil and gas companies control our resources . And what they will pay for it to be profitable. The investments required to build pipelines and LNG plants are enormous and make the costs too high for LNG to be sold in Europe .. especially if the EU can buying Russian gas again after the Ukrainian war. It would be 8 to 10 years before we would be ready. Our only added market for LNG export would be Asian countries. The Big four Oil companies control where the oil and gas is sold.

Canada is a free market nation. If oil companies "controlled" our resources we would be exporting much more oil, to vastly more places. Oil companies do not decide what the price is. Oil is sold on commodity exchanges with "bid" and "ask" mechanisms. Unlike oil, natural gas is not a global price, it's regional. North American gas is sold at far lower prices. Margins would be dramatically higher if selling to Europe. Perhaps we should let free market entrepreneurs and investors determine whether LNG is viable or not.
