  • In 2002, the Ateneo Art Gallery mounted an exhibition of works by women artists from its permanent collection. Curated by Emmanuel Torres, it featured 14 artists. More than two decades later, “Matrix II" presents works by over 50 artists from this university art museum’s collection and from what will be part of Ambeth R. Ocampo’s bequest.
Torres adopted “matrix” as title to represent the womb - a vessel associated with nurturing, caring, and healing. It signifies an environment in which something develops. These artists - representing four generations - existed/exist in different conditions and encountered varied challenges, both as an artist and as a woman.
Their practices follow diverse paths defined by the limitations set by society, as well as by the opportunities offered and made accessible to them. Their works represent aesthetic explorations and personal concerns, as well as social and political advocacies.
Women artists have promoted the innovative use of materials, techniques, and new modes of visual expression beyond mainstream art practices. These are evident in sculpture, printmaking, photography, and media-based works. Creative practice has become a form of social commentary or protest, whether in the realist or conceptual modes. Women artists have taken on the roles of educators, community organizers, and cultural advocates. They have also created spaces that uphold their identity and their society.
#AAG_MatrixII is on-view at the UGF Galleries, Mr & Mrs Ching Tan and Mr & Mrs Chung Te Galleries, Ateneo Art Gallery, Soledad V Pangilinan Arts Wing, Areté, Ateneo de Manila University.
