I have been a fan of Baryshnikov for many years. He is massively talented, highly intelligent, very attractive, and self-deprecating - a killer combination - and he just gets better with age...
OMG! What a legend! I love him! He's so cute when he's saying how sad it is that younger people might only know him from Sex and the City lol. He truly looks amused and genuinely sad at the same time that they wouldn't know him for dancing....Precious!
But I do know him through his beautiful dancing even though I have never seen him live on stage. He has many talents but what fascinates me most is his tremendous humility. Love him so much. Rio de Janeiro - Brasil❤❤❤❤❤❤❤
I had the privilege of meeting Mikhail at the Kennedy Center several years ago; he is so charming, thoughtful and brilliant as well as the most famous dancer in the world. He's very humble. I'm sure his photography is magnificent! thank you!
74 years old , is the result of living the life doing the right thing , he looks well and strong . Remember watching his movies I was 15 years old and wow flawless 👋👋👋👋👋
I fell in love with ballet when I watched him for the first time, he is and always will be an artist I idolise strongly. There might be many amazing ballet dancers out there, but for me Mikhail will always be a class of his own.
He is brilliant. Watch his body move as he talks about movement early in the interview. "Dance is a spiritual exercise." Rarely can such a gifted artist talk about his art so compellingly and intelligently. "Restrained strength, dignity, and virtuosity" -- he was describing Argentine dancers, but that's a perfect description of him as well.
There hasn’t been a dancer like Baryshnikov since Nureyev or Nijinsky but Mikail somehow managed to perfect his art, which is a huge achievement and you can’t ignore the fact that both Nijinsky and Nureyev had some serious mental issues that affected their lives. I’ve been “in love” with Baryshnikov forever. I wanted to ballerina since I was 4 years old. All of the lesson’s couldn’t help me get there but I will love and admire and be in awe of the art as long as I live.
Nijinsky was born in 1889, achieved his greatest fame with Diaghilev's Ballets Russes and is often cited as the greatest male dancer of the early 20th century. He became increasingly mentally unstable and was diagnosed with schizophrenia in 1919. Nureyev was born in 1938 in Siberia. He is regarded by some as the greatest male ballet dancer of his generation. He danced with the Kirov Ballet before defecting in Paris in 1961. He performed with all the great companies of the world and developed a partnership with Margot Fonteyn. Nureyev was not known to have any serious mental issues.
"Dance is not who lifts their leg higher, or jumps higher- it is a spiritual exercise." It's like we have forgotten this today when dancers who are like gymnasts with no expression, no musicality, are promoted to principle dancers!
He came to America to broaden his horizons...his craft was so important to him that he had to totally separate from his native land...what a gifted dancer...you can hear his love for dance as he speaks...it's truly a part of his soul....
I’ve seen Baryshnikov all my life in his true greatness of dance. It’s nice to see such a tender side and the depth of his humanness and heart. I’ve seen a new side of him in this interview and another reason he is the legend that he is. His soul runs deep. Thank you for presenting this interview on film in addition to it being recorded for radio. I haven’t known of your work being in the US but have become a fan.
very much appreciate sharing my time on the planet with such a talented, intelligent man. I saw him in a play in Santa Monica several years ago.. was amazing.
I remember a huge poster of him at the entrance at my dance school that I would pass thru daily on my way to dressing room❤ He is THE ONE …I haven’t found another male dancer that I was so passionate about. I’ve seen new great ballerinas though, but male dancers, he’s still number one for me❤
I absolutely love this man. They are an incredible artist in every sense of the word! I fell in love with performances in Giselle and Nutcracker and in a movie where they and Gregory Hines slay every dance sequence and variation on stage. I can't get enough of him.
Damn! I still so in love with Misha.... He was my inspiration to dance when I was 3 years old ( Im 45). He is still The One. I saw him dance and he was so so so powerfull. He transcended everything. No other dancer could match him ♥️♥️♥️
Didn’t know he defected. Just thought he was amazing ballet dancer. And he tapped with my all time fav Gregory Hines. After reading up on his story…..Just Amazing! 🥰
White Nights (1985) ...I have admired his work since then, such a generous artist and kind, witty, intelligent man. Hope to see him perform on stage in a play one day 🙏
Simply the best. Watch any films of any premier danseur noble and Baryshnikov excels them all, every time, no question. Heart, inspiration, skill, precision, form, style, charisma.
Enjoyable interview. Mr. Baryshnikov still looks great, though his halting speech is a little concerning. It was very interesting hearing him talk of the other forms of dance. I was especially taken with his reaction to Argentine Tango. For expression and passion, it's hard to beat. Great dance of any kind comes from a place beyond the physical. And though he downplays it a bit, he was WONDERFUL in Sex and the City. Such an attractive man, and he seems to be aging well. Until this interview, I didn't know he was also a photographer. I'm going to have to search the internet now for examples of his photography.
I danced professionally many years ago. I would like to clarify two of the discussion topics 1) As I was a dance "performer', I always knew where I was supposed to be. Everything was choreographed. I have trouble with social or spontaneous dancing. Even though I am led by the man, I don't know where I am supposed "to be". It is somewhat of a different emotional response to dance, so I understand what he is saying 2) Much of commercial dance is killing artistic dance. When I see kids from "Dance Moms" or "So you think you can Dance" it is canned dance with lots of tricks. What Baryshnikov is saying is so true, the great choreographers are not in it solely for money (yes they need to make a living), but it is not what drives them.
14:00 "... because they prepared, the night before they already tried to imagine how the singer will sing or actor will portray his own Hamlet, you know... how this dancer would willingly show their soul. And that's the most important, that fragility and transparency." "And you forgot?" "...No" 🤦🤦🤦
I think he is ONE driven human being. His dance solos are still stunning. Thankful he had the courage to then be able to create a body of work he did in Canada and America. He should work on his autobiography.
Why don't you mention the Alma Mater of all the prominent ballet dancers - the Vaganova Academy of Russian Ballet - the cradle of the eminent dancers . It is a school of classical ballet in St Petersburg, RUSSIA. The school was established in 1738 All students at the school begin by studying a program of dance training, secondary school level education, French language and piano lessons. As they progress through the school, the program becomes more intensive, with new subjects being added to the curriculum as the students become more advanced. Some of the notable graduates are : Yuri Grigorovich George Balanchine Rudolf Nureyev Mikhail Baryshnikov Mathilde Kschessinska.Galina Ulanova Vakhtang Chabukiani and many , many others. Boryshnikov is one of them. Many of the world's leading ballet schools have adopted elements of the Vaganova method into their own training . By the way an America ballet school has been trying to make some achievements, but....
Super entrevista¡.
I have been a fan of Baryshnikov for many years. He is massively talented, highly intelligent, very attractive, and self-deprecating - a killer combination - and he just gets better with age...
You’ve really captured him. He is such a joy listening to. He has so much wisdom.
he does
Absolutely, like a fine wine..
I'd love to see him onstage in another play..
He is like a fine wine, beautifully balanced and well rounded. 😊
Me also..
My god, is there nothing this man can't do?? Dance. Singing. Photography. Acting. Musician. What an absolute modern-day Renaissance Man!
Musical classes are required in russian ballet schools.
Actually his photos are not that great. They are nice but not great. His dancing is where he is master, the rest is nice but not great.
I totally agree dance is a spiritual experience. I love dancing.
Mikhail dance is magical.
Such an amazing, kind man. No other dancer has ever been as good as him in my opinion.
OMG! What a legend! I love him! He's so cute when he's saying how sad it is that younger people might only know him from Sex and the City lol. He truly looks amused and genuinely sad at the same time that they wouldn't know him for dancing....Precious!

I just found this interview! I named my daughter after Mikhail 25 years ago. Still as elegant as ever! My all time favorite male ballet dancer.
Mikhail still looks wonderful and still inspired by his love of art of life. All the best to you Mikhail! ❤
LOVE MIKHAILL SUCH A GREAT DANCER
Great interview. Mikhail is such a treasure.
I fell in love with ballet when I watched him for the first time, he is and always will be an artist I idolise strongly. There might be many amazing ballet dancers out there, but for me Mikhail will always be a class of his own.
As a Cuban dancer, he always was my idol!!
Love you Baryshnikov!!

Such an extraordinary and beautiful man, a complete intelligence.
He is just astounding what He knows! And I thankGod He came here, what a blessing He is and all of His genius abilities are just incredible.
He came to America to broaden his horizons...his craft was so important to him that he had to totally separate from his native land...what a gifted dancer...you can hear his love for dance as he speaks...it's truly a part of his soul....
He did not separate entirely. His native country is Latvia and he visits this country from time to time
Hei is still so attractive, talent, intelligence & hunks hunka looks. Love his smile.

I think the "halting" speech is just him thinking. The main points, the examples, the details -- he is totally on, totally engaged.
Magnificent ❤️👏❤️👏❤️
He is a Renaissance man! A fabulous dancer and a terrific actor!

how embarrassing to have the questioner be surprised that music and dance are connected. how gracious of Baryshnikov to overlook this ignorance!
He's like peaceful version of Klaus Kinski
Is he fine??!!
Умничка большой. Сумел выжить и победить в чужой стране
