I agree with that first commenter about wishing Karl was still here. He really brought so much magic to Chanel and it's just not the same now. Yes, the show had some wearable pieces but it wasn't very inspiring. Also, I expect more with hair and makeup for a runway show and thought they could have done more with that side braid.

This is the thing. It doesnt have to be Karl / Theatrics. It can go back to Coco wearability, but do it WELL. Look at Hermes runways... you can see the quality of design through the screen. Chanel, flops.

It is striking, and beautiful. Didn't know it was Le Corbusier. Clever move by Chanel because it's a cheap solution to a venue and it would also have had real presence as well and a great view.

The problem with everyone getting ”Zara vibes” that is that places like Zara are copying big designers so many of their ideas have come from Chanel. So if you get a retro Chanel show, it’s going to look like a Zara because Zara references Chanel.

I loved the hoodie under the tweed blazers.
The 60s set at 05:56 was cool!
The dress at 7:34 was so pretty!
The white dress at 14:31 with the black straps is lovely.

I think she's done a safe collection and there's something for everyone. It doesn't have a strong unifying theme, but the reality is the clientele is now fractured, she has to cater for all age groups which is a tough ask.
These are survival times and Chanel is about their own survival in this collection. Safe but OK. I wouldn't refuse any gifts from this collection in my size put it that way.

Super great commentary Jess! You have to be quick because they’re moving so fast and you sounded like a pro! I absolutely love love love that glitter dress with the spaghetti straps! Chanel looks quite old and dated to me; including a majority of their bags. Maybe it's that I'm in my 50's, but so much of Chanel screams old to me as of late. It doesn't help that back in the day (1980's-1990's) tweed was what much older, but stylish ladies wore and their styles haven't really had fabulousness since Karl left.
Add in the price increases and quality issues and Chanel is just one, big no to me at this point.

Chanel can change , but how , great fabrics and details , that screamed Chanelesque, replaced with cheap fabrics, logos, and price through the roof! No thank you. I don’t need mediocre quality, with price out of this world so called everyday wear. I don’t know why everyday should be boring, cheap fabric clothes😳🤪 I jumped that ship, I want some quality, and details, that Prada is giving us, and of course Old Celine archives Phoebe Philo, and her new brand. BTW , so many complained why her price are quite high. But look at the fabrics, details, craftsmanship… Chanel jeans, please the only jeans Chanel can sell, just because has logo all over, nothing more. I want to look myself, that my style would shine, not Chanel cc all over, making me look like a clown😱😂 advertising them for free, and looking like everyone else. No thank you. Have a blessed day🙏❤️

Very disjointed. Timeless - in that Virginie couldn’t pick whether she wanted 70’s boho, 20’s and 30’s waistlines, 2010’s twee, 60’s mod, a splash of Romanticism, it felt all over the place! If one of the fashion questions is “Who is the girl you’re dressing,” this collection would blare “I’m Every Woman” by Whitney in response.
And a water fixture doesn’t a cruise collection make. I think they were putting a heavy bet that the weather would be sunny and beautiful, and showcase how Corbusier loved his open spaces, but because it wasn’t, it detracted from the show because otherwise its setting is a structure that is so against what this collection is; Corbusier’s designs scream elegant simplicity, while this collection is full of half-baked ideas, no through line or clear vision, and plenty of unnecessary embellishment.

I think these crappy ready-to-wear designs are a big part of the price increases. They’re just not making money off couture and rtw so they’re marking up their classic bags. It is starting to feel like a fire sale.

The whole mood is just boring. If they were going to show more wearable pieces, at least make the show look more fun. The models look like they didn’t want to be there, the pieces, just look “dead”. If that’s the cruise, I definitely don’t want to be there.

  • @deborahcurtis1385

The collection needs to reflect the times, which are economically very uncertain. So people aren't going flashy nor exuberant.
That's for much more optimistic times. So Virginie needs to be both classic and interesting a tough ask!
Had she done the vastly extravagant sets and installations that Lagerfeld did, you'd all be saying how out of touch she is.
Also she is doing better proportions with the longer skirts, that's very now. And the obligatory very short skirts for contemporary and the very young. The hoodie inclusions are just a nod to the times. Gabrielle Chanel has historically been about comfort, that's the removal of corsets and ultra fitted clothes that don't give. So it's natural for the brand to pivot on that element of comfort and athletic leisure. The loose blouson shorts look great. I also like the elongated sleeveless denim jacket.
Zara, Topshop and others past and present copy Chanel, not the other way around.
This reflects your own references not the facts. IMO.
    Be fair people!

@@Jessiestyle Yeah thanks for that and ...well obvs I don't claim total expertise, I just try a different POV sometimes and explore that. I'm well aware of street fashion influencing designers and in fact Karl Lagerfeld was gifted at interpreting and anticipating the zeitgeist. I just felt we are all piling into Virginie and thought I'd try another angle. I don't rate Coach. Call me difficult...lol! Anyway it seems undeniable that the Chanel collarless suit is so copied right now it's tragic. Especially those so called 'quiet lux' (the most overused term for 2024) brands like Gaella. They look awful. I thought for a nanosecond about buying one and then realised...who am I kidding? They're not 'quiet luxury' they're 'sad imitation'! LOL
