    This was super helpful! I'm writing a fight scene in a low-fantasy story and this gave me an easy way for even a two-handed longsword to be disarmed! Thank you!

    Something I’ve notice is that many disarms end up being opportunities for your opponents to do the same to you.
    Speed seems to be essential. You have to beat their ooda loop and that gets difficult while trying to do fine motor skill work inherent to disarms.

    • @DVS040
      @DVS040 5 лет назад +4

      Speed is the key to all techniques. And like all techniques there has to be an opportunity.
      The best counter when you are getting disarmed is to go directly in to wrestling

    Better yet, use a Ranseur, you get a +2 to Disarm for using a 2-handed weapon, a +4 if you have the Improved Disarm feat, and a +4 untyped bonus for using a Ranseur. Total +10 before even factoring in your Base Attack Bonus or Strength Modifier.

    In Kali, the disarm done with the rapier is very similar to what we call a vine disarm, while the one with the Messer is essentially what we call a snake disarm.

    My son and I were sparring with long swords and he came up with a really cool disarm. I can email you the video but to try and describe it 1 comes over the top with a downward head strike. 2 is half swording. By catching the strike on the hand guard 2 spins inside to trap 1 sword under his arm and continues the spin to thrust into the body.

    The third disarm with the messer looks just like a common disarm from Eskrima/Filipino martial arts, done with the single stick.

    Great job! But you are right, it doesn't work against an experienced opponent. Disarms which are done through a strong and quick strike against weapon or against opponent's hand are more likely to work.

    Can you guys make a video on countering unusual guards? I have a friend who is transitioning from both staff and he holds his longsword in a position between half iron door (ulber) and long guard (langort) such that it is pointed right at me waist, making it very difficult to come in without receiving a thrust or a quick disengage. And he stands just far enough away to make a blade grab impractical.

    • @BloodandIronHEMA
      @BloodandIronHEMA  5 лет назад +3

      Check our video on blade grabs. When the Messer is pushed against the wrist in addition to twisting out, the defender has no structure to do much.

    • @snakeoveer1046
      @snakeoveer1046 5 лет назад +3

      There is no blade towards your armpit just the spine of the sword.
      And even if there was one, it's like halfswording or blade grabs, as long as there is no slice, there is no cut, and if you were naked you could get flesh wounds

    • @galandember
      @galandember 5 лет назад +1

      @@BloodandIronHEMA Thank you, this must be a very high level technique than!

    • @galandember
      @galandember 5 лет назад

      @@snakeoveer1046 I see the logic, but when you fight a very agressive opponent it's very dangerous. When his locking the blade in his arm the cutting edge is very close to his forearm, where the tendons and arteries are. It's not really difficult to hurt those because they are superficial. I can imagine theese techniques in a duel and from a very skilled and experinced swordsman. On my beginner level, I guess I wouldn't have the courage to try this out.

    • @snakeoveer1046
      @snakeoveer1046 5 лет назад +4

      The blade is on the outside of the forearm while the major arteries are on the outside.
      And it's just as I said before, it's like a blade grab, if you apply the technique correctly and fast, you will be breaking your opponents structure before he can slice you.
      I'm not saying it can't be countered, if you opponent is faster than you he can slice from the armpit to the forearm while retreating, but you have to remember that everything can be countered

    For the last one you also open yourself too the person you're trying to disarm simply performing out very long drawing cut against your brachial artery... If you're going to do something about that you have to bend the wrist immediately to stop them doing this

    • @scottmacgregor3444
      @scottmacgregor3444 5 лет назад

      As much as you have time, interest, and energy for and your body will allow.
      I've had to cut back a little to give one of my shoulders a rest, but until recently I was doing 6-8 hours of class a week with another couple of hours of at home exercise and drilling.
      As long as you're not drilling bad habits/form or getting so tired you're getting sloppy, you'll continue to benefit.

    • @eddard9442
      @eddard9442 5 лет назад

      i agree, if your timing and distance management is superior to your opponent you will never need to disarm or even grapple, it is good to know if you screw up and they charge you, disarms and grapples in defense is the only way as i believe doing so on the offense is too risky and as you say a light hit outside the danger zone, perhaps on their hand or forearm.
