How do i do this without the 2 strands, instead with a single strand

Thanks for reaching out. You would actually apply the very same technique as shown in this video even though you are working with only one color. With one color and one strand of yarn, you still are working with a pair of stitches. The first a knit stitch that is facing you, and your next stitch which you are slipping will be the knit stitch on the opposite side of the fabric which is now facing you as a purl stitch. So for decreases you would first rearrange the stitches for your next two pairs -- so two knit stitches are together and then the two purl stiches are together (the two stitches that will be the knit stitches on the other side). Then you knit the first two together (or do a SSK) and then your purl the next two together (or a SSP). You would also apply the same technique in this video for increases: first picking up a stitch on the front side of your fabric and then picking up a stitch on the back side of your fabric. I hope that helps! Happy knitting.

For this video I was just knitting a sample swatch in the round. It was not following a specific pattern for a hat so I don’t have a number of stitches recommended for a double knitted hat. I’m sure if you search for a hat pattern using double knitting with worsted weight yarn you may find a good one that specifies the number of cast on stitches. Sorry I couldn’t be of more assistance.
