    As others have also pointed out by now, but I feel needs emphasis... Peder 'Thundershield' Wessel was *not* a noble by birth. He was the son of a tailor from Trondheim, and one of sixteen children. A famous danish song about him has a brilliant line about how, having considered following his father's footsteps, he found the needle too small a weapon, and settled on the cannon instead. "Those will do", said Thundershield.
    He was ultimately ennobled for his deeds, though, and given a noble crest, crowned by a thundercloud - providing a second meaning for his name, since 'skjold' can both refer to a physical shield, and a family crest. But, yeah, that's just one more bit of his badassery - ascending from commoner to noble was NOT easy back then!

    • @Jacob_Junge
      @Jacob_Junge Год назад +7

      Peter Wessel's father wasn't a nobleman, but he also wasn't a tailor. He was a city council member and a wealthy merchant who owned two trading ships.
      The song you're referencing (which was written almost 140 years after his death) implies that Peter was a tailor's apprentice before he ran off to Copenhagen, but that's not supported by any historical evidence.

    He is actually got an entire verse (out of four in the entire anthem) dedicated to him, in the unofficial Danish national anthem (unofficial, because apparently it is not proper, to have a national anthem about kicking the shit out of the Swedish)
    The biggest brand of matches in Denmark is named after him and feature his portrait on all boxes.
    The reason is that the matches are made from Swedish wood, so every time you strike a match, Thundershield is striking the Swedish.
    So yeah, the Danish like him too.

    Should probably add that the king involved was the Danish, as Norway was danish vasal at the time. The king even made Peter a noble as part of the Thundershield title.
    Due to this, Thundershield is also considered a hero in Denmark.

    • @LordDim1

    • @LordDim1
      @LordDim1 Год назад +3

      @@D3NL1LL3P No, Denmark and Norway were formally two separate kingdoms throughout the period of the union. They were two separate crowns. He was King of Denmark and separately also King of Norway. As a matter of fact, up until 1660, they had two different laws of succession. The Norwegian crown was hereditary, passing automatically to the king’s eldest son, while the Danish crown was elective; the king was elected by the nobility.

    • @cpgvonc7568
      @cpgvonc7568 Год назад +2

      @@LordDim1 Some of the confusion stems from the fact that Both claims are correct. In Denmark they had (a bit cheekily) legally declared Norway a Danish region, already during the reformation in 1536, and further during the reform (coup) to absolutism in 1660, meaning that from a Danish perspective at the time, Norway was legally a region of the Danish state. However, consistency wasn't their key strength and the king would still carry the titles as king of both Denmark and Norway, and there would still be two seperate law codes for the two countries.
      At the time you could refer to 'Denmark' with the understanding that this included Norway. Later on we generally prefer to refer to it as 'Denmark-Norway' to refer to the specific state construction of that period. Both are technically correct.

    One of my favorites is the story of an Alien trying to figure out how humans built societies in inhospitable areas of their planet, and the human goes, "well we sent people there, and hoped they would come back, when they didn't, we sent more people there to find out what went wrong and plan accordingly." To the absolute horror of the alien whose people just ignored the dangerous areas of their planet.
    Alien soldier: This is a death planet! We're doomed!
    Earth Soldier from Sydney: Dangerous venomous creatures? Unbearable humidity? Giant creatures that can eat and or trample ya? Sounds like home
    Alien soldier: Are you insane human!?

    I dont remember why but his face is on most matchboxes in Denmark.
    Also "thundershields soldiers" is a saying here, referreing to the same people appearing.
    It comes from a story where he had his crew and soldiers march in a ring around his enemy, making it seem like he had an enormous army

    • @Jacob_Junge
      @Jacob_Junge Год назад +1

      His face is on matchboxes from the Tordenskjold match company. They named the company after him because he was famous for beating the Swedes, and they wanted to become a big Danish exporter of matches, in a market that was dominated by Swedish companies.
      Ironically, the Tordenskjold company was eventually bought by Swedish Match Industries in the 1970s, and the production was moved to Sweden.
