Despite our differences and opinions, I think we can all collectively agree that 2023 was a stacked year for great anime and animation as a whole. It was a fun, wild, and unforgettable ride 🔥
Genuinely yeah, like we got so many insanely good shows pretty much back-to-back.
2023 was an incredible year for incredible animation and sakuga. Gear 5, most JJK S2 fights, Frieren, Heavenly Delusion. lots of good sakuga this year.
2024 is already looking pretty neat for sakuga or animation. egg head arc, kaiju 8, solo leveling, delicous in dungeons, ishura, wind breaker and so much more
2024 is gonna be carried by dandadan, arcane s2 and tower of god s2
Shibuya wasn't just fights...it was the conclusion of s1 and sets everything about the cursed world.

I am so happy to see Undead Girl Murder Farce on your list. The entire show had so many dynamic angles, and the opening was one of my favorites, plus the writing really made you think and want to solve the case alongside the gang. The episodes with Lupin were especially excellent.

Im still blown away that despite shitty working conditions...jjk s2 had some MASTERCRAFT episodes. Its insanse how good alot of these season looked despite its issues and flaws

Especially if it's to the point where animators like Amphibi and Vincent Chansard refuse to come back to work at mappa.
When you've got one of the best animators in the industry saying he's not returning...one of the best animators unable to complete his cut for ep 19 on time...then it's a new level of bad.
It's a norm within the industry but jjk s2 is an anomaly even within that norm.

When you hear araki was called to work on the Show 6 months Before the broadcast or evangelion having 6 months to animate 18 episodes (after the first arc). You surely, like a lot of people, learned about "terrible production" with JJK or AOT. Also a lot of people dosen't even care to look at Mappa's positives, they just repeat the same shit. Also atsushi kobayashi also became an in-house member btw

A respectable list. Love your work.
Its hard for me to make a top 10 tierlist, but if I had to choose number 1, its gotta be Heavenly Delusion. The end was unnecessary but it just felt so fresh overall. It was visually appealing and it was mysterious. Now that season one has concluded, I really wanna find out what man eaters actually are!

An anime that flew under everybody’s radar last year, and I wish would get more love since the animation and writing for this show has always been consistent, is Bungo Stray Dogs. Both seasons 4 and 5 always kept me on the edge of my seat and was extremely entertaining.
I haven't watched a lot of anime this year, but if I were to judge anime that weren't continuations, I'd say "Scott Pilgrim takes off" takes the cake for my favourite anime of the year. I binged the show in less than a day and didn't get bored once, everything I expected to be good was better and most importantly, it's propably the most unique anime to come out in a long time, both story, qnd animation wise.
One 'downside' is that you won't enjoy the show in it's fullest without watching the movie or reading the comics, but that's hardly a bad thing.
It's only really half-japanese but I guess it could count as anime
I heard of Blue Giant as a manga, but I didn’t realize it got a movie! I gotta watch it for sure.
I was a little surprised Oshi No Ko didn’t even make your honorable mentions as it was top 5 for me in terms of enjoyment, but ig AOT is only in the lower half of my top 10 this year, so we all got our own tastes.
Also I am a little surprised your top romance pick wasn’t the Kaguya movie?! 🎥
You know, I completely agree with what you said about Tengoku Daimakyou, Undead Girl Murder Farce and Frieren. Permit me to say that my top 10 list greatly resembles yours!😄
Though, some shows like Oshi no Ko are among my Top 10, I enjoyed every bit of last year's number of offerings...

I think the problem Heavenly Delusion is that it needed more then just 13 episode, because it was clearly to the big twist and reveles but it needed more time to for has to get clearly the bigger picture, so i think with should see and wait.
But very good list.
Aot is my favorite story ever but I gotta say Jjk S2 had me completely locked in. Such a thrill.

Please, if you see this, I have to recomend you Link Click. It is a chinese work so it tecnically is not considered to be an "anime" but instead Donghua, it is pretty much entirely 2D animated. Season 1 aired in 2021 with a season of 11 episodes + a must watch ep 5.5 and season 2 aired in the summer 2023 with 12 episodes. A lot of genres can fit into it such as action, sports and romance but by far the most prevelent ones are super natural and drama. It is genuinely one of my favorite things ever and it is a bummer that it is not very well known outside of China. So if you missed out on something incredible this year it is definetly Link Click (both seasons included) unless you watched it and didn't like it which I doubt, but it honestly has an amazing premise and does not hold back it's punches so please do yourself a favor and watch it🥺 Great video otherwise❤

for me vinland saga is the best, jjk is 2nd and 3rd is a tie between pluto and aot (unlike you, i havent watched 100 shows tho) (way closer to 10)
after watching this video i just want to say that i 100% agree that shibuya and hidden inventory are the two peakest arcs in the new gen battle shonen animes, and the only other battle shonen animes with arcs as good are one piece with sabaody and marineford. and also hxh with chimera ant arc and yorknew. and also i might be lowballing aot cuz it had only 2 (theoritically 5) episodes this year

Yea, love your list even though I disagree with your criticism against Heavenly Delusion, I guess it was too realistic (according to the rules of the story and world) the end; The Girl/Boy is just that, he/she isn't a girl so her/his experience to the R-word scene is going to be abnormal. He is still a boys mind in a girls body so his reactions and responses shouldn't be normal.
For me it was Bleach cour2 enjoyed every bit of it

1.Vinland Saga :most mature anime arc i have seen. Thorfinn character development was properly done not like Eren which I felt was cringe when he was crying about mikasa finding another man.
2.Bleach tybw:Rukia bankai was best to watch.Bleach power scale and world building is better than jjk and more memorable characters.
3. Jujutsu kaisen: best shonen arc of year with consistent pacing and animation. Mappa should give their animators a break. 😢
4. Oshi no ko: one of dark slice of life and taboos of entertainment industry.
5.Attack on titan - ending was bad eren character conclusion was worst spoiled my mood my opinion.

Let me correct cause you are completely utterly wrong on some of these things: animation, JJK frieren only had like 2 episodes which stood out in action animation and that doesn't compare to the quality and quantity of jjk. Best composition is jjk and eminence; I think you should watch probably pretentious video "bleach cour 2 was disappointing"
Best complex story jjk the buildup to shibuya and the fights alone are more complex than the entirety of "link click" who the fuck even cares/watches that. The
imo pluto had the best osts, its composed by Yugo Kanno after all

@@abcd14486how does he not care anymore? Kubo is author not higher up of studio+ he is working alot more in comparison to cour 2 for story and he also deciding op and ed songs. And its studio's own choice of reflecting kubo's art he didn't forced anyone.

His work concerns only the script department where he makes changes to the plot and expands it where he could not do in the manga. Kubo does not relate to animation in any way. Maybe you should criticize those who are in charge of the animation department and for the poor schedule?

The thing is that 2023 was fully outsourced from action animators because Mappa is forcing on so many projects just to rush those animators to death.

Heavenly delusion for me was a big disappointment, and the most disappointment in my life and worst show tbh. I understand loving it for the production, its really insane, but story is real sh*t. As u said, it just went weird instead of going for story, it went kinky and unnecessary most of the time. Not to mention all this gender a$$ agenda and all gross fanservice and useless interactions and some even useless mystery through the show. Couldve been top 1 but it ended up as worst one. Turned from loving it at 1st to hating its existence from middle way and forward, maybe even before that

TYBW has been such a massive letdown animation wise. Pierrot is in shambles and Bleach deserves better than only 2 fights being adapted well. Also it deserves a director who actually cares. Kubos story additions are carrying hard. I hope cours 3 & 4 are better.
