    While the game itself was quite simple, practically any problem in the game had more than one solution.
    Can't deduce the gnome's name to get the magic beans? You get a key and an alternative way into Cloudland. Can't figure out that dragons hate water? Kill him with a thrown dagger instead. Or wear the magic ring and steal the mirror. Or use the protection spell, no-sell his flame and take the mirror. You can either kill the giant or (with or without the ring of invisibility/protection spell) avoid him until he grows tired and takes a nap, which lets you steal the chest. Forgot the fiddle to charm the leprechauns? Scare them with a four-leaf clover instead. Get get the goat to butt the troll off the bridge or forgot the cheese? You can bribe the troll and the rat with minor treasures. (though you'll lose points)
    While moon logic was required to get the maximum score, it was quite easy to beat the game itself.

    • @spacequesthistorian
      @spacequesthistorian  3 года назад +4

      This is actually one of the things I really appreciated about the first King's Quest game. The amount of alternate solutions to puzzles really speak to a level of foresight that future games -- in fact, most adventure games that came after it, including its own sequels -- did not have.

  • @jasonblalock4429

    "Romancing the Stone" was also a popular early-80s romcom/action hybrid from Robert Zemeckis, the movie he directed right before Back To The Future made him huge. The premise is "What if a sheltered romance novelist found herself swept up in a real-world romantic adventure?" It's a fun flick, worth checking out. Anyway, I've always assumed that was the source of KQ2's title. (both of them)

    • @spacequesthistorian
      @spacequesthistorian  3 года назад +3

      In my first KQ2 video, I did make a joke reference to the movie -- and also to the phrase's origin, which is a jeweler's term.

    LOL. Okay, so a couple of rectifications. Vivendi was not exactly "cool" with people making fan games of their intellectual property back then, but for Tierra (which changed its name to AGD Interactive on their request to avoid trademark infringement) they offered a fan license allowing the team to keep distributing its existing remakes (KQ1, KQ2) and finish its ongoing ones. (QFG2 and secretly KQ3) It was not an unofficial okay, it actually involved some legal steps, but the "used with permission" should still be on the fine print of the official site.
    They also never said anything about not using art assets from the original Sierra games. I mean, that thing might have bugged them if someone had made an original game using Sierra's art assets, but if you're already using the King's Quest trademark, the asset collaging is really just small potatoes in comparison.
    The real reason the team touched up KQ1 and KQ2's graphics was simply because they could. They had three really talented artists who initially joined the secret KQ3 team and who proved willing to work their magic on the KQ1 and KQ2 backgrounds. (John-Paul Selwood, Emily Selwood and Johan Botes, with the former earning credit for the motherload of the work)

    • @spacequesthistorian
      @spacequesthistorian  3 года назад

      Thank you for the corrections. My comment about Vivendi being cool with fan remakes/projects was in contrast to how Activision sees it today. Vivendi at least gave Tierra a fan license and were prepared to listen. Activision's legal department, on the other hand, has absolutely no sense of humor about this sort of thing. They would just send a C&D and that would be the end of that.

      I actually did most of this video myself - all of the game footage was recorded by me, except for Graham scaling the throne room walls in the Master System version. And the script was all me, too.
      But that's not to say I haven't had help in the past. There are some very lovely people on my Discord who regularly help me with fact-checking, going through game code, and recording footage for me to use. It sounded like it was a Robot Chicken-like parody of King’s Quest where violent solutions netted you more points. Its been a while since I read it, but according to the backstory, King Edward and his wife were having bad luck trying to produce an heir, so the evil sorcerer came to them and promised to grant their wish in return for the magic mirror. They were hesitant at first, but the mirror showed them a reflection of the future king; whom they assumed would be their son, so they let him have the mirror. But of course, the evil bastard didn't deliver on his end of the bargain. Then the queen got sick later on, and the dwarf came along with a magic root; which he claimed would save her, but would only give it to them in exchange for the shield. They relented and gave him the shield, but of course, the root didn't do dick and the queen died. Later, King Edward came upon a woman who was... being attacked by wolves or something, I don't remember exactly what. But anyway, he saved her and they fell in love. But then one night, she snuck into the treasury, swiped the chest, and vanished, because it turned out she was the witch in disguise.
    So yeah, the kingdom was in pretty bad shape after all that - no mirror to warn them of rough weather or incoming invasions, no shield to help protect against said invasions, and not enough money to pay the guards or buy things from other kingdoms. And it really took its toll on Edward's health too.

      The King's Quest by Roberta Williams Manual was the second manual released for the original King's Quest.
      The most important part of it was the newly expanded introduction story which explained the loss of the Three Great Treasures, and the downfall of the kingdom.
      "There are no credits for the story manual itself. However the technical manual in some versions specifies that the 'story is by Annette Child'[1]. The story is said to be by Annette Childs, but it is assumed that Roberta Williams had some involvement as well (and she did come up with the original in-game story for IBM). Oh, absolutely. There's moon logic and then there's "so far gone it's in another galaxy" logic, and that dumb gnome's puzzle is definitely the latter. However, I will say that having the puzzle technically be optional (since he gives you a key to the stairs if you get it wrong) is a merciful concession. I think what they actually wanted was a "cool secret extra content" type thing, like Star Road in Super Mario World. Like, you could finish the game without ever seeing it, but there was something extra cool awaiting you if you somehow did this absurd exercise. (Having to navigate a twisty beanstalk just to get to the same location, though, is hardly proportional to the amount of work you have to do to get it, I feel. At least Star Road had a BUNCH of extra content.)

      @@spacequesthistorian From what I understand, IBM kept a close watch on the development of KQ1 and was constantly telling them to put in alternate solutions to puzzles, for accessibility. It's why (imo) KQ1 is still one of the most player-friendly games in the series. I just wish Sierra had realized that IBM was *right* rather than going back to Infocom-level cruelty the moment they didn't have Producers breathing down their necks.

    I discovered King's Quest years ago thanks to the Tierra remakes of KQ I and II. They didn't have any voice acting at first.

      They did not. :) I played the very first version of their KQ1 remake for this video.

    Kill goat now i'm curious if that works in the agi version. piss poor look messages i'm guessing a consequence of limited memory and rom size

      The lack of look messages are almost certainly a memory issue, but that wasn't going to stop me from making a joke about it. 😅

      Yeah, you can kill the goat in all versions, afaik. Although I think in the original AGI you have to specify "with dagger."
      LOL, now I'm wondering if you can kill the goat with the slingshot. That's one thing I never thought to try back in the day.

    A shame the physic powers of King Graham aren't featured more often.

      In between killing monsters from Hell? I didn't know you had to pay taxes for that.
